Can We All Agree – 8/29/15 Edition

August 29, 2015

Sorry I missed a week. Events just conspired against me last weekend. I have no excuse, unlike Hillary.

But:

Can we all agree that Hillary’s inability to get out in front of the whole email server thing, is really destroying her candidacy? At this point it doesn’t make any difference who’s right or who’s wrong. I guess she’s hoping no-one pays attention until after Labor Day.

Can we all agree that after a month of talk, It’s time for Joe Biden to make a decision? It’s clear now it has nothing to do with his family, but it’s just politics.

Can we all agree that the actions of all four people who prevented a mass murder on a French train, made us all proud?

Can we all agree that the longer the Europeans fail to deal with the influx of migrants from North Africa and the Middle East, the worse things will get?

Can we all agree that the EU issues are very similar to immigration problems we have failed to deal with in the United States? The difference is that Mexican migrants die alone in the desert, so Americans can ignore the issue.

Can we all agree that, as some economists have pointed out, “Wall Street is not the Economy” should be this week’s theme?

Can we all agree that since we really have no idea what’s going on in China’s economy, it’s pointless to get too excited?

Can we all agree that by almost any measure the US economy is doing fine?

Can we all agree that based on their comments about the “China crises’ the GOP candidates know nothing about economics?

Can we all agree that Donald Trump has sucked all the air from the rest of the GOP field? Those who think the other candidates are playing it smart, waiting for him to self-destruct, may have a long wait.

Can we all agree that Trump’s comments may have already lost the Republicans the votes of the two fastest growing immigrant groups in the US – Latinos and Asians.

Can we all agree that The Pope’s visit to the US next month could be the most significant visit by a prelate in US history?

Can we all agree that it makes sense that employers who hide behind contractors who pay substandard wages, should be held accountable?

Can we all agree that it might be tough to find a new CEO for the Ashley Madison website?

Can we all agree that some of those psychological studies with non-repeatable results, sounded a bit specious from the beginning?

Can we all agree that the split in the Jewish community over the Iran treaty is deeper than just the deal itself?

Can we all agree that it would be great if the father of slain TV journalist Alison Parker, could get politicians to act on gun legislation, but if the death of 20 children and 6 teachers in Newtown, CT couldn’t do it, we have our doubts?

Can we all agree that no-one is surprised that the footage of Planned Parenthood executives was doctored? But that won’t stop politicians from using it.

Can we all agree that the Napa Wine Train handled a group of allegedly boisterous riders, very badly?

Can we all agree that former President Bush  showed some Moxie by returning to New Orleans to mark the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina?

Can we all agree that the longer Hillary’s email issues remain front page news, the less confidence Democrats have that she will be our next President?

Can we all agree that  Joe Biden and now Al Gore certainly feel that way?

Can we all agree that every time Jeb Bush makes a policy speech his approval ratings seem to drop?

Can we all agree that the longer Donald Trump remains the front runner the better the Democrats feel? It will be a lot of fun watching him report for jury duty.

Can we all agree that while we may not understand the reasons behind  China’s  moves, the phrase ‘currency war’ can’t be good?

Can we all agree that when the EPA pollutes a river with toxic waste it sort of hurts their image as a protector of the environment? The good news is, they have called attention to a serious problem.

Can we all agree that no-one in Ferguson, MO, seems to have learned anything over the last year?

Can we all agree that the folks at Coca-Cola are not fooling consumers when they try to convince us that a ‘healthy diet’ includes their drink?

Can we all agree that Frank Gifford was the only adult in the booth, during his years on Monday Night Football?

The entrance to the Robin Williams Tunnel

The entrance to the Robin Williams Tunnel

Can we all agree that a year after his death, it’s still hard to believe that Robin Williams is gone? At least we now have a tunnel named after him in California.

Can we all agree that the average internet user could care less that Google is now part of a holding company called Alphabet?

Can we all agree that another round of negotiations over Greek debt is just more of yesterday’s news?

Can we all agree that whether you agree with him or not, we are all saddened by news of Jimmy Carter’s cancer diagnosis? Likewise with Boston Red Sox Manager John Farrell.

Can we all agree that while grown-ups may be concerned about Bert and Ernie’s move to HBO, most of the kids will barely notice?

Can we all agree that, despite what Marco Rubio thinks, opening the US embassy in Havana is the right move?

Can we all agree that seeing crude oil at $42/barrel was something no-one expected to see – ever?

Can we all agree that there is a certain symmetry when NBC officially fires Donald Trump and Jimmy Fallon signs a six year contract extension in the same week?

Can we all agree that while we are alarmed at news that ISIS may be using mustard gas, nothing really surprises us about their tactics?

Can we all agree the NFL had a pretty bad week? A 49er gets kicked off the team for his third DUI violation: A reserve linebacker punches a starting quarterback: the daughter of a Hall of Fame inductee is not allowed to speak at her father’s posthumous induction and the league CEO is raked over the coals by  New York judge. Oh, and three teams are trying to blackmail their host cities by threatening to move to LA?

Can we all agree that the GOP debate was the top  news and entertainment show this week?

Can we all agree that who won and who lost is probably dependent of who you were backing before the debate took place?

Can we all agree that, to our amazement, the biggest winner was not any of the 10 candidates but the three people asking the questions? They stayed away from some important topics, but at least they didn’t just lob softballs all night.

Can we all agree that Donald Trump doesn’t seem to care who he insults?

Can we all agree that the JV-debate beforehand was a waste of time?

Can we all agree that the divisions in the GOP were on full display?

Can we all agree that Jeb Bush was probably the real loser since he did little to separate himself from the rest of the pack? The fact that he looked stiff and unprepared did not help either.

Can we all agree that it’s a shame that we will not have a chance to get Jon Stewart’s take on the GOP show?

Can we all agree that we owe a debt of thanks to Mr. Stewart for showing us all how to be political cynics?

Can we all agree that it’s amazing there could be a two-hour debate without one word on income inequality, race relations, Citizens United or climate change? Just ask Bernie Sanders.

Can we all agree that despite the GOP predictions that we are headed in the wrong direction, an additional 215,000 jobs in one month is a pretty good direction?

Can we all agree that the timing of Sen. Chuck Schumer’s announcement that he would oppose the Iran nuclear treaty was deliberate, probably in the hope that no-one would notice?

Can we all agree that the battle over the Iran treaty is far from over?

Can we all agree that the funding battle over Planned Parenthood may be the biggest red herring ever concocted by the GOP?

Can we all agree that it’s about time the administration took on the coal lobby over power plant emissions?

Can we all agree that there will be no winners in the ‘Deflategate’ controversy and that both sides have an interest in paying attention to the judge, and settling the case – quickly?

Can we all agree that with major events in New Hampshire and Cleveland this week the 2016 campaign has an official starting point?

Can we all agree that the Minnesota dentist who killed Cecil the Lion may actually be spurring some change in the big business of big game hunting?

Cecil the Lion

Can we all agree that Hillary Clinton’s Friday night document dump of tax returns, medical records and emails just adds to suspicion about her campaign?

Can we all agree that Jeb Bush’s tremendous lead in PAC money raising won’t do him much good if he continues to stumble on the campaign trail?

Can we all agree that Californians deserve a healthy slap on the back for exceeding government requests for water conservation? Now if the farmers would do the same, maybe we can manage the drought until El Nino gets here.

Can we all agree that no one doubts the wreckage found in the Indian Ocean is from the downed Malaysian airliner? But few seem to know if it will help figure out what happened.

Can we all agree that with slow but steady growth continuing, the economy will be a major campaign plus for the eventual Democratic nominee?

Can we all agree that both the NFL and Tom Brady look pretty bad as ‘Deflategate’ heads to court? Are you ready for some actual football?

Can we all agree that the murder of a Cincinnati motorist over a missing license plate, maybe the best argument ever made for police body cameras?

Can we all agree that Cincinnati police must be doing something right because they have managed to avoid the same kind of violence that broke out in Baltimore and Ferguson?

Can we all agree that the Albuquerque police dispatcher who hung up on a 911 call from someone trying to save a shooting victim, needs to be prosecuted for something?

Can we all agree that the Los Angeles city council should get some support for trying to ban ammunition magazines, but the NRA will have the last word?

Can we all agree that income inequality was never more evident that in new statistics showing home ownership at its lowest level in 45 years?

Can we all agree that it’s good to know we can all sing “Happy Birthday’ without fear of a copywrite infringement lawsuit?24-cosby-lede-feature

Can we all agree that The New York Magazine cover of Bill Cosby accusers may be the best cover, ever?

Can we all agree that Boston’s decision to turn down an Olympic bid is great news for a region that doesn’t need all the headaches and debt? As a native of the area I’m probably a bit biased but I feel the same way about San Francisco.

Can we all agree, speaking of the Olympics, that no-one was really looking forward to a trip to Kazakhstan for the 2022 winter Olympics?

Can we all agree that Turkey’s entry into Mideast fighting adds a dangerous new dimension, as it threatens to bring NATO into the battle?

Can we all agree that Mike Huckabee’s comments on the Iran nuclear treaty are disgusting, no matter how you feel about the issue?

Can we all agree that it’s about time the United states government admitted that they needed to do something about Chinese hacking into our computer systems. Of course the list of other countries, doing the same thing is getting pretty long.
