CWAA: Can We All Agree™ – 2/10/18 edition

February 10, 2018

Can we all agree, at some point even, Donald Trump will tire of the dysfunction in his own White House?

Can we all agree, two resignations and an offer to resign by the chief of staff, cannot be considered normal?

Can we all agree, no one is surprised  that Donald Trump thinks spousal abuse is fine for an ‘honorable public servant’?

Can we all agree, there was no chance The President was going to let the Democratic defense of the FBI and Department of Justice be made public? Expect a leak, soon.

Can we all agree, it won’t be long before Robert Porter’s girlfriend, White House Communications Director Hope Hicks, runs afoul of Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree, after this week’s budget agreement, neither Democrats nor Republicans can use the deficit as a reason to oppose government spending?

Can we all agree, even Paul Ryan and the Tea Party who spent the last 10 years objecting to Obama era programs, didn’t have the political will to vote against the plan?

Can we all agree, it won’t be long before there is no one left at the Department of Justice who could fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller?

Can we all agree, the message of peace and harmony, from the Winter Olymoucs, is a welcome respite from our internal political turmoil?

Can we all agree, if the government was really interested in Peace, Vice President Mike Pence and his wife should have turned around and publicly greeted the North Korean delegation.

Can we all agree, it’s hard to understand how intelligence officials, can be bilked out of $100,000 – aren’t they the people we rely on for accurate intelligence?

Can we all agree, using a top secret government computer seems like a perfect way to mine bitcoins – until you get caught by the KGB?

Can we all agree, Israel’s entrance into the Syrian conflict is an ominous new sign of the region’s continuing instability?

Can we all agree, Americans need continual reminders that this is not 1929 and the stock market is not the economy?

Can we all agree, 200,000 cases of fraud from the Wine Country fires are hard to fathom?

Can we all agree, it’s about time the International Court investigated the actions of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte?

Can we all agree, Angela Merkel, lost some power but she did what she had to do to create a German government that was functional?

Can we all agree, Steve Wynn may have lost his job but he saved his company?

Can we all agree, we don’t need ‘lady friendly’ Doritos?

Can we all agree, god did the nation a favor, by declining to tell Michelle Bachman to seek a US Senate seat?

Can we all agree, the last thing this country needs is a military parade to boost Mr. Trump’s ego?

Can we all agree, it seems pretty clear the only person in the government who did not like James Comey, was Donald Trump?

Can we all agree, Rep. Nancy Pelosi didn’t win, but her 8-hour speech in defense of Dreamers won her respect?

Can we all agree, the world should be outraged by the Polish government in restricting free speech regarding the holocaust?

Can we all agree, anyone who has ever bought a lottery ticket would gladly change places with the New Hampshire woman who declined to accept her $640 million lottery prize, because she didn’t want her name to be made public?

Can we all agree, Democrats who did not applaud Mr. Trump at the State Of the Union, were doing the MOST American thing they could: defending their right to free speech? And he was not trying to make a joke.

Can we all agree, if President Obama, former Attorney General Eric Holder and the Supreme Court all seem to be on the same side in opposing Reoublican gerrymandering, maybe we do have a way out of our electoral mess?

The deficit clock: both sides have thrown in the towel

The deficit clock: both sides have thrown in the towel

Can we all agree, if the GOP wants to see how much trouble their candidates are facing, they only need to look at California where Republican candidates are already facing long odds for re-election?

Can we all agree, there is a very human dark  side to the gig economy that no one really wants to discuss?

Can we all agree, Elon Musk has successfully disrupted the rocket launch business with his usual bravado – now if he could only deliver cars on time, he might even make money?

If you want some examples of the right way to fight obesity, take a look at what Chile is doing.

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 1/28/17 edition

January 28, 2017

Can we all agree: Happy 99th birthday to my Aunt Sylvia.

Can we all agree, with one stroke of the pen Donald Trump’s has made a mockery of both the Statue of Liberty and the constitutional guarantee of freedom of religion? It didn’t take long for someone to challenge the new rule.

Can we all agree the Republican party may  be just as appalled at Donald Trump as the rest of us, but they have no idea what to do about it?

Can we all agree, watching Mr. Trump’s press conference with British leader Theresa May did nothing to bolster our confidence that he has a clue about international relations, beyond his own personal businesses?

Can we all agree, the GOP seems to have a sudden case of budget amnesia about the $10 trillion budget deficit they are about to create?

Can we all agree the first lawsuit against the Trump administration, is just the first attempt to make his tax returns public, and may be the first step toward impeachment? Expect many more.

Can we all agree the signs held by protestors at the Women’s March last weekend may have been the best part of the event?

Can we all agree the fact that the protest so enraged the President that he continues to lie about the size of the crowd, just makes it more satisfying?

Can we all agree the women’s march was the most impressive protest we’ve seen since the 60’s?

Can we all agree, it will be tough to maintain the movement’s momentum since there is no real leader, but as long as Mr. Trump continues to alienate the majority that opposed his election,  it will have legs, as they say.

Can we all agree California Governor Jerry Brown will not be the last public official to oppose Mr. Trump on climate change and sanctuary cities.

Can we all agree the idea of building a wall on the Mexican border was great for the campaign trail but it has nothing to do with border security.

Can we all agree putting pressure on department heads and forcing resignations is not the best way to run the government?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s open lies are just one more symptom of his personality disorder?

Can we all agree the Mexican President was right to cancel his visit to the US?

Can we all agree it’s tough to have a war with the media if they don’t fight back? But I doubt they will just ‘shut up.’

Can we all agree that backing torture as an interrogation technique puts our country in the same classification as the dictators and despots we have fought for decades?

Can we all agree the Dutch takedown of Mr. Trump is among the funniest to pop up on the internet?

Can we all agree, no-one is surprised James Comey will be retained as FBI chief, now that he’s a trusted campaign aide?

Can we all agree, the thought of an American president sending troops to a major city, reminds us of the desegregation era we all thought had ended?

Can we all agree, the President’s preoccupation with non-existent voter fraud just undermines our Democracy?

Can we all agree, attempts to gag every federal employee will not be successful and this administration will face withering internal criticism from leaks? The fact that the employees will have the First Amendment on their side will make it tougher for Mr. Trump to defend his position.

Can we all agree the Keystone Pipeline is not the path to energy independence?

Can we all agree, it will be interesting to see which Democrat calls Mr. Trump a liar as he is addressing them in February?

Can we all agree, the British parliament, should admit they have made a mistake and refuse to approve whatever Brexit plan Theresa May submits to them?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump obviously gave Israel at least tacit approval to expand their West Bank settlements?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump doesn’t seem to realize that the Holocaust Memorial is meant to honor the millions of Jews exterminated by the Nazis?

Can we all agree there is no doubt Mr. Trump has no idea what abandoning the TPP will do to relations in the Far East?

Can we all agree most other politicians would have offered at least some kind words of support for tornado victims, but apparently Mr. Trump, didn’t notice the event?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump must be happy Alec Baldwin gave him a week off from SNL?

Can we all agree, it’s a bit late for the New York Times to decide they’ve been too leniet with their coverage of Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree that Syria is now just a Russian outpost in the Middle East?

Can we all agree it may not be too long before our Congress starts to look like the one in Turkey?

Can we all agree, rumors that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is contemplating a political career is just one more example of the strange, strange world created by Mr. Trump?

And this week’s good read involves a Trump supporter and a $450 tip.

and finally – a farewell to Mary Tyler Moore, who was so much more than just another TV star.

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 1/7/17 edition

January 7, 2017

Can we all agree Vladimir Putin was masterful in abusing our electoral system?

Can we all agree this won’t be the last time Russia will use cyber-attacks to alter the course of world events?

Can we all agree it’s amazing that the only person who doesn’t believe it, is Donald Trump? Even the Russians celebrated.

15940446_1430617696950822_8444219393828689282_nCan we all agree his Saturday morning tweet storm urging closer relationship with Russia makes him seem even more desperate?

Can we all agree, the fact that Mr. Trump cited world fugitive Julian Assange as his source for doubting the intelligence report, is just absurd?

Can we all agree that once again it appears that Mr. Trump’s ego, just can’t deal with the fact that he received 3 million fewer votes than Hillary Clinton and that Mr. Putin helped  him win in the electoral college?

Can we all agree new polls showing Trump supporters are counting on Democrats to stop the new president, show an amazing lack on confidence in their own candidate?

Can we all agree the GOP has reached new levels of hypocrisy as they appear prepared to accept a $1 billion budget deficit just to get rid of The Affordable Care Act?

Can we all agree it’s starting to look unlikely that the Senate will approve a repeal of President Obama’s signature accomplishment, unless they have a plan to replace it? Even Mr. Trump seems to have doubts.

Can we all agree, we knew all along we’d be paying for any wall built along our  border with Mexico?

Can we all that 75 consecutive quarters of job growth would be an accomplishment for any president, but coming after the worst recession in 5o years deserves special recognition?

Can we all agree, Mr. Trump may be the first president who will be forced to deal with non-political legal issues throughout his term?

Can we all agree, many civil servants will have second thoughts about working for the federal government now that the House has resurrected an obscure law allowing their pay to be cut by Congress?

Can we all agree the House has done an embarrassingly good job at getting us all to focus on ethics? Too bad Mr. Trump doesn’t.

Can we all agree, now that Rex Tillerson has taken a $180 million buyout from Exxon Mobil, we’re sure their interests will not color any decision he makes as secretary of state? Yeah, right.

Can we all agree naming a Wall Street lawyer to head the SEC just guarantees that no-one will be watching anything that happens in the financial markets?

Can we all agree Vice-President Joe Biden had the best quote of the week?

Can we all agree the first thing Mr. Trump should do is stop trying to make policy via Twitter?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump will learn pretty quickly that he can’t just bully every company in America to get his way. – especially since, in most cases, his comments had nothing to do with their decision?

Can we all agree, he can’t even wish everyone a happy new year without creating a controversy?

Can we all agree Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has shown, once again, that he has no respect for the constitution or for governing, by scheduling cabinet nomination hearings on consecutive days, although most nominees have not even filed disclosure forms or passed routine background checks?

Can we all agree that might not help Attorney General nominee Jeff Sessions, who seems to be stretching the truth and  is facing protests from the NAACP, as well as law school professors across the nation?

Can we all agree some states seem to have found a novel way of keeping Mr. Trump off the 2020 ballot?

Can we all agree it won’t take long before the State of California and the federal government battle in court?

Can we all agree there will be no real cease-fire in Syria until all the rebels have been eliminated and Assad is firmly in power once again?

Can we all agree that New York Governor, and probable presidential candidate Andrew Cuomo, has unofficially launched his campaign by proposing free tuition to any NY resident accepted at a state school? (With Bernie Sanders by his side, no less)

Can we all agree, that while the US debates abandoning the Paris Accords, China is moving ahead  of us with a  commitment to renewable energy?

Can we all agree banning the simultaneous shipment of guns and ammunition on an airplanes seems like a logical solution too prevent massacres like what happened in Fort Lauderdale this week, but it will never happen?

And finally:

You can now fact check Mr. Trump’s tweets by following the Washington Post’s new  weekly feature.

and

If you want to know what we will be missing watch the First Lady’s final public speech.

Just to prove no topic is too mundane from Mr. Trump take a look at his Twitter battle with the former California Governor over the latest edition of The Apprentice.
