CWAA: Can We All Agree™ – 5/27/17 edition

May 27, 2017

Can we all agree after 8 years of trying to recover from the poor image created by the Bush administration, it only took one visit to Europe  from Donald Trump to destroy the nation’s reputation?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s visit to NATO,  not only showed his poor understanding of how the alliance works but his childish attitude in elbowing a fellow leader out of the way to get to the front row of a photo op?

Can we all agree the Europeans seem to have changed Mr. Trump’s views on climate change, but it’s doubtful his EPA chief will change course?

Can we all agree trying to make sense of the administration’s policy on immigration gets tougher by the week?

Jack, the graduate (right) and his big brother, Cole, at the post-graduation dinner.

Can we all agree if the Senate and FBI probe of Russian influence is indeed focused on Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump is in deep trouble?

Can we all agree there was no need to discus secret back-channel communications two months before the inauguration?

Can we all agree, by requesting campaign documents it appears some Senate Repblicans may have finally  realized they need to push back against Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree, things were pretty quiet when Donald Trump was off twitter and his staff could manage his message?

Can we all agree the victory of Montana’s new GOP representative seems to prove Trump’s claim that he could murder someone in the middle of Midtown  and no one would care? Here’s a guy who assaulted a reporter and voters still elected him and the House doesn’t even care.

Can we all agree whatever the Senate comes up with on healthcare reform will have a tough time passing that chamber but an even rougher time in the House?

Can we all agree, it’s probably not a surprise that Hillary Clinton is going after Mr. Trump, but when she’s joined by John Boehner you know the President has a real problem?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s plan to quickly find a new head of the FBI is stymied by his own actions?

Can we all agree any notion that the swamp is being drained should be put to rest when the White House releases the lobbyist waivers it has granted in order to fill government positions?

Can we all agree the swamp is now a water hazard for the Professional Golfers Association?

Can we all agree it would be tough to prove any Russian influence on any president other than Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree Michael Flynn’s decision to fight a congressional subpoena stands in stark contrast to former campaign chief Paul Manafort– although both men will probably face criminal charges?

Can we all agree, the Supreme Court is facing some weighty decisions that will test it’s political independence?

Can we all agree touting an approval rating that is among the lowest of any new President is not smart politics?

Can we all agree the Senate’s newly approved sanctions on Iran may be counter-productive?

Can we all agree the contrast between Mr. Trump’s visit to Europe and that of former President Obama could not be more dramatic?

Can we all agree the budget office report on the GOP health plan was just about what everyone expected? Now the Senate can officially reject it.

Can we all agree, it takes a lot for the press corps to feel sorry for Sean Spicer, but Mr. Trump managed to do it this week when he excluded the devote Catholic from his meeting with The Pope?

Can we all agree The Pope was a master of ‘not-so-subtle’ messaging in his choice of gifts for Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree Sean Hannity is learning the real implications of fake news?

Can we all agree the British response to leaks from the investigation of the Manchester bombing was much milder than what Mr. Trump might have said if the situation was reversed?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s cabinet secretaries, Betsy DeVos, Scott Pruitt and Ben Carson,  continue to display an uncommon lack of understanding  about what most Americans want?

Can we all agree all sides of the debate seem to agree Mr. Trump’s budget is dead on arrival, but he has managed to frame the debate so we will wind up with the lesser of two evils?

Can we all agree the downgrade of China’s credit rating will do little to affect their position as a center of world commerce?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s contined embrace of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is, in some ways, more troubling than his admiration for Vladimir Putin?

Can we all agree the US may finally pay attention to what’s happening in Turkey, now that an NBA player has been accused of being a terrorist?

Can we all agree no one seems to care that the Carrier jobs Mr. Trump claimed to have saved are now moving to Mexico?

Can we all agree Melania seems to feel that same way about her husband as most Democrats?

And finally:

Two of the more depressing stories of the week for Democrats: one GOP Congressman found support still strong in his district and what Trumpcare might look like based on the problems in Iowa.

And, once again, the deterioration of the nation’s moral fabric was on full display with 2 murders in Oregon and an ugly scene aboard an airplane.

and:

Anyone hoping to make the long romantic drive up Route 1 along the California coast is apparently going to have a long wait.

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 11/19/16 edition

November 19, 2016

Happy anniversary to my lovely wife.

Can we all agree the actors at ‘Hamilton’ who lectured VP-Elect Mike Pence at last night’s performance, spoke for many of us?

Can we all agree Donald Trump will be asking for a lot of apologies over the next 4 years, if he can’t take the criticism?

Can we all agree, the only reason Mr. Trump settled his fraud case was because, even he realized that a president-elect testifying would be an embarrassment?

Can we all agree that the least Paul Ryan can do, as he campaigns to eliminate medicare, would be to tell the truth?

President Obama says his last good-byes.

President Obama says his last good-byes.

Can we all agree that the GOP will have no excuses if the economy tanks over the next four years?

Can we all agree that the cabinet appointments Mr. Trump has announced do nothing to quell the fears of most Democrats?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s meeting with Mitt Romney, is just for show?

Can we all agree that Mr. Trump’s election has already made the racist segment of the population more aggressive?

Can we all agree that using the WWII Japanese internment as a rationale for ‘registering’ Muslims is just offensive?

Can we all agree, no one is shocked that Mr. Trump sees no problem in putting relatives is key positions or allowing his family to profit from his position?

Can we all agree, it won’t be long before Mr. Trump gets in serious trouble with his twitter account?

Can we all agree, the press and GOP are working overtime to avoid labeling Steve Bannon what he is – a racist? Using the term alt-right or noting that he didn’t write the pieces on Brietbart – he just published them – just masks his real intention.

Can we all agree this pretty much sums up what Hillary is thinking?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump loves to see headlines noting that no-one knows what he is going to do?

Can we all agree Mr. Obama is trying to put on a brave face as he attempts to make sure his entire legacy will not be undone?

Can we all agree it’s not the first Supreme Court appointment that will be important, but the next three? – which Mr. Trump may make.

Can we all agree, the Democrats might be on to something, by trying to work with Trump, since it’s a good bet the divided GOP probably will not agree on much?

Can we all agree the Democrats need new leadership in the House?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump does not have a clue about how to conduct a cohesive foreign policy? – or a cohesive national policy, for that matter.t11-15-16-0001

Can we all agree that Mr. Putin probably can’t contain his enthusiasm now that Mr. Trump has been elected? Over the next four years he will retake Ukraine and the Baltic states.

Can we all agree the number of lobbyists in the Trump administration may break all records?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s appearance on 60 Minutes did little to clarify anything?

But enough about Trump.

Can we all agree United Airlines has reached new depths with their latest proposal for budget airfares?

Can we all agree that fakes news will always be a problem on the internet – that’s why they invented editors?

Can we all agree the Chinese bird that looks like Mr. Trump is pretty funny?

Can we all agree that cell phone apps are playing a major role in the increase in traffic fatalities?

Can we all agree it’s about time we had a museum of women’s history?

Can we all agree we’d be surprised if Mr. Zimmerman did accept his Nobel prize in person?

Can we all agree $850,000 is a small price to pay for the Ten Commandments?

Can we all agree the more research is done, the clearer the connection becomes between fracking and earthquakes?

and finally:

Can we all agree Steven Hawking is being optimistic when he says we have 1,000 years to find a new planet to colonize?

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 6/25/16 edition

June 25, 2016

Can we all agree, the long term impact of the Brexit vote is probably somewhere between the doom and gloom of the economists and the euphoric reaction of Donald Trump?

Can we all agree that only Mr. Trump could put it in context by telling us how good it will be for his Scottish golf course?

Can we all agree with the members of the major EU members: If the separation must happen it should be done quickly?

Can we all agree that it probably won’t have much impact on the election in the United States? There’s a big difference between leaving a political union and electing a racist egomaniac – more likely it will serve as a warning to Americans.

Can we all agree House Speaker Paul Ryan is probably wondering what he has to do toy get some headlines for any of his GOP platform plans?

Can we all agree the Democrats may not have won any votes on gun control measures but they have succeeded in framing the conversation and putting pressure on the GOP?

Can we all agree that Connecticut’s law limiting gun possession may become the template for other states now that the Supreme Court has upheld it?

Can we all agree the battle over California’s gun-control ballot measure will add some interest to the fall election?

Can we all agree this week’s New Yorker article may be the definitive look at guns in America? And if you don’t have time to read it catch Terry Gross’s interview with the author.

Can we all agree that George Lucas will have to make some changes in his approach if he wants to build a museum for his Star Wars art? Two cities have now rejected his initial plans.

Can we all agree the last thing the Brazil Olympics needed was a suspension of their drug testing laboratory?

Can we all agree it seems the list of athletes who will not be going to the Rio Olympics may be longer the list of who will be attending?

Can we all agree The GOP glee over the Supreme Court’s non-decision on the President’s immigration plan will be short lived if it costs them the Senate and the Presidency this fall?

Can we all agree that Bernie Sanders has pretty much lost all the leverage he thought he had over Hillary Clinton and the platform committee?

Can we all agree VW’s rumored $10b settlement with owners of diesel cars may be a bargain if it at least puts the issue to bed?

Can we all agree the wildfire burning east of Los Angeles could be the most serious fire no-one is paying attention to?

Can we all agree the owners of Justin Wines may have done everything growers should not do when they want to expand their vineyards?

Can we all agree it’s good to know the Marines finally got it right when they tracked down the real participants in the famous flag raising photo of Iwo Jima?

Can we all agree that, as far as the  Baltimore police are concerned, a ‘not guilty’ verdict does not mean the officers did not bear some responsibility for what happened to Freddie Gray.

Can we all agree we’re not  sure what the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action really means?

Can we all agree the pilots of the plane which rescued two ill workers from the South Pole are worthy heroes of the week?

Can we all agree it will take public pressure to regulate the fracking industry now that the Supreme Court has delayed the EPA plan to regulate the use of public lands?

Can we all agree that, while it’s hard to believe, Mr. Trump hit a new low this week  in his pandering speech to Evangelicals ?

Can we all agree that the closing of the investigation into the 1964 murder of three Civil Rights workers is a sad end to an embarrassing chapter of American History?

Lebron James: NBA finals MVP but he won't be going to Rio Olympics.

Lebron James: NBA finals MVP but he won’t be going to Rio Olympics.

Can we all agree most of us never dreamed we would hear that the energy produced by California’s sooner-to-be-closed Diablo Canyon Nuclear plant could be replaced by alternative energy sources?

Can we all agree LeBron James deserved the MVP trophy in this year’s NBA finals series?

Can we all agree the USGA deserves all the scorn they have received for their mind-boggling decision in last weekend’s US Open Championship?

Can we all agree that Hillary Clinton is learning what GOP rivals learned the hard way: No matter what you say or do it’s difficult to keep Mr. Trump out of the headlines even if it’s because of  lies, bizarre interviews or  incompetence?

Can we all agree that Venezuela should now be considered a failed state?

and finally:

Can we all agree the courage of the rape victim in this story is remarkable?

Can we all agree that every other official at FIFA, including it’s president, should be pretty nervous?

Enough already, on to other topics:

Can we all agree that the Warriors-Cavs NBA finals will be great to watch? I’m with Steph and his daughter, Riley, in 7.

Can we all agree that the latest revelations about former House Speaker Dennis Hastert, while shocking, are a bit perplexing, coming 40 years after the alleged incident – while he is no longer at the pinnacle of power?

Can we all agree that the life sentence handed down to the creator of the Silk Road website, was meant to send a message to everyone on the dark web?

Can we all agree that the Nebraska legislature’s decision to abolish the death penalty, over the governor’s veto – is pretty amazing?

Can we all agree that the latest court decision delaying immigration reform, ignores the human toll being placed on 12 million residents of the United States?

Can we all agree that, while we are a nation of law, governing by court decision is not the way the founding fathers designed the system to work?Flooding

Can we all agree that most climate scientists are looking at  extreme flooding in Texas and unusually high temperatures in India and saying,”we told you so?”

Can we all agree that Ted Cruz’s condemnation of federal money for Hurricane Sandy, and about-face on aid for Texas flood victims shows him to be the duplicitous politician that he is?
