October 28, 2017

Can we all agree, the chances of the Spanish government allowing the Catalonia region to become independent are about the same this week as they were last week: zero?

Can we all agree, Mr. Trump declared an opioid emergency, but did the least amount possible to fight the epidemic?

Can we all agree, Republicans still have few clues about what will be in their tax cut package, but they still want to give the 1% a nice Christmas present?

Can we all agree, PGE, the utility that many blame for the recent fires in Northern California, may be slow to maintain their equipment, but they are pretty fast at lobbying to make sure ratepayers, and not stockholders,  pay for their mistakes?

Can we all agree, the immigration service may have the law on their side, but when they arrest disabled 10-year-olds after surgery, they look like uncaring thugs?

Can we all agree, Mr. Trump may think he is a beloved figure in the GOP, but the all-out civil war taking place in his party tells a whole different story?

Can we all agree, the FCC’s decision to loosen ownership rules on media outlets, means there will be fewer local news programs and more homogenized and probably biased news sources?

Can we all agree, the administrations mixed signals of California Governor Jerry Brown’s water tunnel project, is just one more example of a dysfunctional and poorly run, White House?

Can we all agree, having a national organization, such as the NAACP, warning an entire ethnic group about using your company, American Airlines,  is bad news and even worse PR?

Can we all agree, retiring Senators Jeff Flake and Robert Corker could now be the deciding votes on the Republicans tax cut plan, so maybe it would be good to stop insulting them?

Can we all agree, everyone has a favorite Fats Domino song?

Can we all agree, after listening to 8 years of conservatives warning about a budget deficit, their silence now is pretty deafening?

Can we all agree, there may be one call for jurors that everyone in Chicago might want to attend, since President Obama plans to answer the call?

Can we all agree, it’s getting tough to figure out  if no one or everyone wants credit for financing the dossier on Donald Trump’s activity in Russia?

Can we all agree, if big business wants an edge against consumers, Republicans will vote for it, no questions asked?

Can we all agree, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, has some explaining to do about the two-man firm from his home town, which ‘won’ a $300 million contract to restore some electrical service in Puerto Rico?

Can we all agree, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos knows she will not be welcomed at the nation’s public schools, so she is avoiding them?

Can we all agree, going to CVS to get health insurance will take some getting used to?

Can we all agree, conspiracy theorists will have at least another 6 months  to offer more half baked theories about the facts surrounding the Kennedy assassination?

Can we all agree, there needs to be a serious investigation into the deaths of four US solders in Niger, now that we know they were apparently alive when French helicopters rescued their comrades?

Can we all agree, Mr. Trump doesn’t seem to complain too much about government figures showing good news for the economy? So why do we need a tax cut?

Can we all agree, the courts did not have much choice but to allow an undocumented teen in detention to have an abortion?

Can we all agree, the decision by Republicans to open investigations into 7-year old decisions of the Obama administration makes them look like political tools of the administration?

Can we all agree, it’s fair to say Chinese President Xi Jingling may be the most important world leader now that Mr. Trump has abdicated the position?

Can we all agree, all 238 communities bidding for the new Amazon headquarters think they have the best proposal?

Can we all agree Melania Trump’s statement on bullying, annotated with tweets  from her husband, was just embarrassing?

and finally:

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 1/21/17 edition

January 21, 2017

Can we all agree that  the new President’s inaugural address did nothing to create a sense of unity in the nation, even among his supporters?

Can we all agree his first executive order, allowing states to ignore parts of the Affordable Care Act, will create confusion and do more harm than good?

The women's march on Washington

The women’s march on Washington.

Can we all agree that with Mr. Trump’s new slogan, it’s clear world leadership will fall to Britain’s Theresa May and Germany’s Angela Merkel?

Can we all agree Mr. Obama’s last video message tried unsuccessfully to leave his supporters with some hope?

Can we all agree the FBI did a pretty fair job of making sure no-one would notice they are investigating ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, by announcing the probe a day before th inauguration?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump will not be happy with the comparison of his inaugural crowds with those of Mr. Obama?

Can we all agree, despite Mr. Trump’s efforts to prohibit the National Park Service from estimating crowd sizes, it’s obvious the crowd for the women’s march will also be march larger than his?

Can we all agree comparisons between Mr. Obama’s extraordinarily high approval ratings and the extraordinarily low ratings of Mr. Trump are inevitable?

Can we all agree, speaking of comparisons, it seems Mr. Trump  needed Mr. Obama’s inspiration for his inaugural cake?

Can we all agree the idiots who decided to destroy buildings in Washington DC had nothing to do with the protests that will mark the rest of Mr. Trump’s term?

Can we all agree many world leaders, except probably Vladimir Putin, will not sleep well until Mr. Trump has left office?

Can we all agree it didn’t take long for the Trump minions to begin expressing their views, as went to work deleting large portions of web pages dealing with climate change and government regulation?

Can we all agree, deleting climate change information is significant, since it comes just days after NASA announced that 2016 marked the third straight year global temperature reached record levels?

Can we all agree that it’s nice to see an impeachment website starting on Day One?

Can we all agree the Trump Hotel will be the starting point for every ethics inquiry over the next four years?

If you want to hear more about the ethics challenges Mr. Trump will face, just listen to this week’s NPR interview with two ethics experts:

Can we all agree this weekend’s Saturday Night Live show may have a record audience?

Can we all agree we will have to get used to more lawsuits and depositions by Mr. Trump? It’s only a matter of time before one of them results in release of his tax returns.

Can we all agree that doesn’t even include the ethics issues his cabinet members will face?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s cabinet picks including Mr. Mnuchin, Mr. Perry, Mr. Price, Mr. Pruitt and especially Ms Devos did not aquit themselves very well this week?

Can we all agree we dying to know what’s in the Tiffany box Mrs. Trump gave to Mrs. Obama?

Can we all agree after seeing the hearings this week the two cabinet posts approved on Friday were the least objectionable? But that’s not saying much.

Can we all agree it appears some Trump policies will start very soon with workplace immigration raids and a reduction in funding for the arts?

Can we all agree it will be impossible for the GOP to live up to Mr. Trump’s call for “insurance for all’ when they vote on repealing the Affordable Care Act? Especially when they see the costs.

Can we all agree the friendship between Mr. Trump and the legislative branch will be tested soon when he’s asked to approve a measure repealing many of Mr.Obama’s regulations and also restricting his own executive power?

Can we all agree we’re not sure why the extradition of a Mexican drug lord took place just before the new President took office?

Can we all agree it’s remarkable that at least 10 people have been rescued from the avalanche that busied an Italian hotel?

Can we all agree that America may now be the least safe place in the world as California sets a record for gun permits issued?

Can we all agree most conservatives don’t seem to understand that shortening a sentence means Chelsea Manning is still guilty?

Can we all agree that despite  Mr. Trump’s portrayal of the US economy, we have just about reached full employment as defined by economists?

Can we all agree Mr. Putin is turning in to his SNL caricature?

Can we all agree the Senegalese ‘invasion’ of Gambia would be big news, were it not for our new President?

Can we all agree the end of the search for Malaysian airliner leaves the world baffled?

Can we all agree our dreams of running off to join the circus may have finally ended this week?

and finally:

There needs to be some mention of two other non-political events:

The passing of the last man to walk on the moon and the World Champion Chicago Cubs’ visit to the White House.

November 26, 2016

Can we all agree, regardless of your party affiliation, Fidel Castro was a pivotal political figure of the 20th Century?

Can we all agree, the President-elect’s response – gleeful celebration – is colored by his past attempts to open a casino in Cuba, rather than any understanding of the historical significance of the event?

Can we all agree the reaction to the start of the election recount process would have been much different if Hillary Clinton had won ?

Can we all agree it’s probably not realistic to think the results will be altered? But that hasn’t prevented Jill Stein from raising millions to move ahead in three states.

Can we all agree, the recount will do little to dampen the criticism of the Electoral College as Hillary Clinton’s lead in the overall vote continues to mount?

Can we all agree the proliferation of fake news for profit, may be the  life preserver traditional edited news content needed to prevent its demise?

Can we all agree the outlandish sums the government will be paying for security of the Trump family, is just one way the new President will profit from his own election?

Can we all agree Melania’s decision to remain in New York, at least until the end of the school year, so her son , who some believe has shown signs of autism, can finish the school year, may become  permanent?

Can we all agree the meetings this week between broadcast journalists and later the NY Times, illustrate why Mr. Trump was able to win election by controlling the message through TV coverage? We may be seeing the first Youtube presidency.

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s supporters don’t seem to care that he is continuing to turn away from his own campaign rhetoric? In fact, they expected it.

Can we all agree, Donald Trump’s business interests, make the Clinton Foundation issues look insignificant? His interests are so widespread they will color almost every decision he makes.

Can we all agree, nothing was more chilling this week than the continuing celebrations in the racist alt-right community?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s business interests, and his continued focus on them, could be the undoing of his presidency?

Can we all agree, Mr. Trump’s financial interest in the Dakota Access pipeline  is just one example?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s economic appointments, prove once again that he has duped the great majority of the blue-collar supports who put him in office?

Can we all agree the choice of Betsy Devos as education secretary will continue to make it more difficult for traditional public school districts to educate our children?

Can we all agree the new UN ambassador may have a tough job trying to explain Mr. Trump’s actions to the rest of the world?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s decision to forgo security briefings as he focuses on his cabinet choices, illustrates the attitude of most American’s toward the rest of the world?

Can we all agree the United States should be paying more attention to the showdown between the EU and Turkey?

Can we all agree the election of Donald Trump and the Brexit vote may have actually strengthened the European Union?

Can we all agree, the news that the FBI now has access to everything posted on Twitter, is very disconcerting?

Can we all agree it was reassuring to see a new peace agreement signed in Colombia, even after voters rejected the first deal?

Can we all agree the widespread fires in Israel will be used by all parties to the Mideast unrest, to further their own causes?

Can we all agree, if you were wondering why the battle over court appointments has become so significant, you need look no further than this week’s decisions on new overtime rules or Wisconsin gerrymandering, for an answer?

Can we all agree most American Catholics seem to be OK with Pope Francis’ latest pronouncement on abortion?

Can we all agree, speaking of going unnoticed, no-one seems to  care about the ever-changing Olympic medal count, caused by the latest round of doping results?

Can we all agree it will be interesting to see how Mr. Trump counters the inevitable criticism he gets from Mr. Obama once their roles have changed?

Can we all agree the strangest story of the week may be the Exxon-Mobil decision to sue the offspring of its founding father?

President Obama and his final pardon.

President Obama and his final pardon.

Can we all agree, Mr. Obama is in a race against the clock to make sure many non-violent drug offenders  get their lives back?

Can we all agree he’s facing the same time constraints as he works to honor the many notable Americans who have supported his presidency?

And finally:

You have to wonder if the turkey pardoned by Mr. Obama really wanted to live in a Trumpian world marked by one drama after another?

and

The good news story of the week of the repo man who saved an elderly couple from losing their car.

RIP, everyone’s TV mom, Florence Henderson.
