CWAA: Can We All Agree™ – 11/18/17 edition

November 18, 2017

Can we all agree, most Americans will figure  out about a year from now, that tax reform was not a middle class tax break, when they start to consider year-end moves to lessen their tax burden, and find out there’s nothing they can do?

Endangered species, at home and abroad?

Endangered species, at home and abroad?

Can we all agree, it’s starting to look like the House vote may be another exercise in futility?

Can we all agree, until The President changed course, there was something poetically correct about allowing big-game hunters to import the head of an animal which symbolizes the Republican party?

Can we all agree the House and Senate, long known as a misogynistic boys club,  might change now?

Can we all agree, Franken deserves the scorn he’s attracting, but at least he issued a quick apology? I don’t hear any other expressions of regret – quite the opposite in fact in Ohio.

Can we all agree, the administration has more sympathy for wild animals than it does for immigrants?

Can we all agree the issue probably had something to do with the nation’s two most prominent hunters – the Presidents’s sons?

Can we all agree, the drip, drip, drip of news about Russian meetings, and lies on government disclosure forms, is leading most Americans to conclude that there was some coordination between the Trump campaign and the Russian government?

Can we all agree, joking about the situation doesn’t help the administration’s effort?

Can we all agree, we are supposed to believe the Russians interfered in the Brexit vote and the Spanish election, but ignored our election campaign?

Can we all agree, Brett Joseph, a 36-year-old who has never practiced as lawyer, should stick to his day job as an author, and decline his nomination to the Federal Court

Can we all agree, the 210,000 barrell leak from the Keystone Pipeline, should end the Nebraska debate about whether the line should be extended? It should also end drilling in the Arctic wilderness, but it won’t.

Can we all agree, the more appointments Mr. Trump makes the more resignations and conflicts of interest appear?

Can we all agree, the IRS’s enforcement of the Affordable Care Act Mandate is either designed to put pressure on Congress to repeal the measure, or a sign that the administration has no clue what’s going on? I vote for the latter.

Can we all agree, Democrats are breathing a sigh of relief at the mistrial of Sen. Robert Menendez?

Can we all agree, the real heroes of this week’s mass shooting in Northern California, are the teachers and administrators who ‘locked down’ their school, to prevent the shooter from entering?

Can we all agree, it’s rather transparent that the President  comments on tragedies in red states, and ignores similar incidents in blue states?

Can we all agree, Europeans should be alarmed at the radioactive Russian cloud covering parts of the continent?

Can we all agree, there is something wrong when a business can provide millions to build a museum, but doesn’t want to cover some health care for its employees.

Can we all agree, if you need to hold a press conference to tell the world  how successful you have been, you probably weren’t?

Can we all agree, Mr. Trump’s biggest achievement in China was probably helping to get three shoplifters released from prison, to please UCLA basketball fans?

Can we all agree, we will all pay for the changes at the consumer finance bureau?

Can we all agree, the coup in Zimbabwe had more to do with the president’s wife than Mr. Mugabe?

Can we all agree, CEO’s and millionaires across the country  have called the President’s bluff on his tax reform plan?

Can we all agree, it’s hard to believe the administration has not even expressed sympathy for the 500 people who died in this week’s earthquake in Iran?

Can we all agree, you have to wonder about politicians who decline to provide benefits to their constituents, just to score political points?

Can we all agree, Attorney General Jeff Sessions wants us to believe there could not have been any coordination with Russia, because he thinks the Trump campaign was too disorganized and stupid?

Can we all agree, the continuing pressure to appoint a special; counsel to investigate Hillary Clinton,  shows  Mr. Trump’s lack of understanding about how government works?

Can we all agree, it’s not very reassuring that even GOP lawmakers are worried about Mr. Trump’s control of the nuclear launch codes?

Can we all agree, Mr. Trump’s trip to Asia has been all pomp and little substance?

Can we all agree, it’s pretty clear that even a massacre in a Texas church isn’t enough to get Congress to take action on anything that might be construed as gun control?

Can we all agree, the Texas massacre is not about mental health, it’s about guns?

Do We Really Need Guns?

Filed under: Health,Journalism,observations,Uncategorized,Wellness — Tags: , , , , — admin @ 7:22 am

Several neighbors on my street own guns. The subject comes up once in a while, when there is some kind of crime in our small town

It doesn’t happen very often, but I’m sure this weekend when we’re all out gardening or chatting over the back fence the topic will be mentioned since it’s the first full weekend since the carnage in Las Vegas.

My niece, who is still in her 20’s, owns 2 rifles which are locked in a gun safe until she takes them out for target shooting at a range near her home. I was surprised, and slightly dismayed, when I learned of her interest, but her parents approve so I keep my mouth shut -mostly.

At one time, my wife even suggested I get a gun. After police combed our neighborhood searching for an armed robber who decided the best spot to hide was in a neighbor’s back yard.

I declined, and will continue to decline as long as I live. I can see no point to them. I have no interest in shooting at a target or a deer. Although, they roam our neighborhood with impunity, eating anything that grows. As an avid gardener I consider them rats with long legs. But that’s a different issue.

I cannot foresee an instance where I would use a gun against someone who was threatening me or my family. I can only see that it would make the situation worse.

My dad was a WWII veteran and shot a gun many times, I’m sure, but we never had them around the house and in all my years I don’t remember the topic ever coming up for discussion. After all, he suffered from what we now call PTSD, and I doubt he had any interest in firing a rifle again.

And yes, I firmly believe the second amendment has been poorly interpreted and our Founding Fathers never meant that we should all have automatic weapons in our homes.

Over 60% of the gun deaths in this country are suicides and I can see no reason to make suicide easier.

I’m not saying suicide would be impossible without guns. Heavens knows when my wife’s best friend decided five years ago, to end her life with pills, there was nothing we could do, no matter how much we pleaded with her.

But I’d like to think that my neighbor two doors away, who I had a standing Wednesday lunch date with for the last two years, would still be alive, if he had not been able to take out a gun and blow his brains out early one Monday morning  three weeks ago.

Perhaps, without the NRA, my neighbor and I could have lunch again this week.

CWAA: Can We All Agree™ – 9/30/17 edition

September 30, 2017

Can we all agree, the resignation of HHS Secretary Tom Price was more about the recent failure of ACA repeal than it was about travel at the taxpayer’s expense? If not, we would have had at least two other cabinet resignations.

Can we all agree, the GOP’s tax proposal officially puts to rest any notion that the Republicans ever cared about deficits or anyone but the top 1% of American who donate to their campaigns?

Can we all agree, news that the US has been, ‘in direct talks’ with North Korea, does nothing to calm anyone’s nerves?

Can we all agree, the ICE push to target immigrants in so called Sanctuary Cities, is just one more example of the administration’s petty and cynical view of the American legal system?

Can we all agree, the White House’s incoherent and inconsistent foreign policy was on display once again this week as it was forced to disavow its own Israeli ambassador’s comment?

Can we all agree, Sen. Mitch McConnell and the White House couldn’t schedule a tax-plan press conference fast enough after their bid to repeal the ACA went down in flames again? It’s all about capturing the ‘fake-news’ cycle.

Can we all agree, Steve Bannon’s decision to back anti-establishment GOP candidates makes Democratic in-fighting look pretty tame?

Can we all agree, Roy Moore’s victory in Alabama has turned electoral prognostication into a Las Vegas crap shoot?

Can we all agree, a Cambridge, MA librarian has made her point in rejecting a book donation from Melania Trump, but you have to wonder if she would have turned down the same books from say, Senator Elizabeth Warren?

Can we all agree, blaming the mayor of a bankrupt, flood-ravaged island, with no electricity, for your poor response, is a sure way turn off voters?

Can we all agree, the administration’s  response to Hurricane Maria’s damage in Puerto Rico has racism written all over it?

Can we all agree, a California legislator’s proposed bill to ban petroleum powered cars and trucks will probably win approval in the state legislature just because it will infuriate the Trump administration?

Can we all agree, the argument that ICE agents have simply ‘gone rogue’ in attempting to enforce the administration’s immigration policy, is proven out by statistics showing arrests are up but deportations are down?

Can we all agree, Twitter and Facebook both  should be persecuted for their roles in helping the Russians undermine our electoral system?

Can we all agree, Equifax CEO Richard Smith deserved to lose his job, not because the company’s computers were hacked, but because of his firm’s response?

Can we all agree, by picking a fight with the NFL, Mr. Trump has alienated, a group of people who were his strongest supporters?

Can we all agree, Mr Trump’s outrageous disregard for any legal restrictions makes his aides use of a private email server seem inconsequential – although it cost Hillary Clinton the presidency?
