CWAA: Can We All Agree – 9/3/16 edition

September 3, 2016

Can we all agree that, with stops in California and now China, President Obama is making sure his environmental legacy lives on long after he leaves office?

Can we all agree this week’s biggest loser was Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto?

Can we all agree the only folks who expected a pivot on Mr. Trump’s immigration stand were wishful thinking Republicans?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s visit to an African-American church in Detroit will have to be an Academy Award performance if it’s going to make any difference in the campaign?

Can we all agree the release of FBI files on Hillary Clinton the Friday before Labor Day weekend, guarantees that only the politicians will be paying attention?

Can we all agree that while polls seem to show the presidential race tightening, it’s only a matter of time before Trump implodes again and the margin widens?

Can we all agree the leaders of Venezuela seem incapable to doing anything to provide even basic services or food to their citizens?

Can we all agree the impeachment vote in Brazil was a foregone conclusion?

Can we all agree that when ‘only 151,000 new jobs’ are created in a month it’s time to stop worrying about the economy?

Can we all agree that anyone who thinks the North Carolina voter laws were designed to stop voter fraud are just fooling themselves?

Can we all agree the states should be more worried about foreign hackers than they are about local voter fraud?

Can we all agree that launching a new generic version of the EpiPen which is still 10 times more expensive than it was a few years ago, is still outrageous?

Can we all agree we’re having second thoughts about this whole privatization of space travel, now that another rocket has exploded on a Cape Canaveral launch pad?

Can we all agree the United States should be embarrassed that we’ve ‘reached our goal’ of accepting 10,000 Syrian refugees?

Can we all agree the situation in Syria is so bad the sides can’t even agree on whose bomb killed an ISIS leader?

Can we all agree that the European Union’s aggressive stand against the tax policies of its own countries, is just discouraging business?

Can we all agree, it does seem a bit odd that Wikileaks never seems to say anything bad about Russia or its leader Vladimir Putin?

Can we all agree we should be just as outraged that homes were allowed to be built on contaminated land in Indiana, as we were about the water in Flint. MI?

Can we all agree that American’s reaction to even minor incidents just shows we have have a collective case of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

Can we all agree Anthony Weiner has some serious issues to deal with if he ever wants to return to a public life? Chris Brown might want to retire too.

Can we all agree that San Francisco Forty-Niners quarterback Colin Kapernick has every right to stage a protest, but the whole scene seemed a bit odd, since he had never even mentioned anything about human rights since he got to the NFL?

Can we all agree that when Americans read about the death of the Uzbekistan president, they had no idea how to find the country on a map?

Can we all agree that when your flagship product has to be recalled because the batteries overheat and explode, you have a serious quality control issue?

Can we all agree its nice to know that living organisms were on the planet a few billion years sooner than we first thought?

Can we all agree every dog owner knows that their pet understands every word they say?

and finally:

Can we all agree that Gene Wilder will be missed?

And, in case you are worried about cheating on your taxes, at least one expert has some good news.

Can we all agree, this week we are all Italian? Unfortunately, it appears this will not be the last earthquake the country suffers.

Can we all agree, despite what her PR machine claims, Heather Bresch, the president of the firm which sells the EpiPen is a poster child for what’s wrong with the US drug industry? And her father, the senator, knows it.

Can we all agree Bernie Sanders’s new political group is off to a bad start?

Can we all agree Maine Governor Paul Lepage is the only politician who can out-Trump, Donald Trump? Even the Donald doesn’t have a newspaper apologizing to the nation.

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s pivot under Kellyanne Conway, his new campaign manager, has everyone scratching their heads?

Can we all agree if Hillary Clinton was running against a traditional candidate, such as Jeb Bush, her email problems would really make her a serious underdog?

Can we all agree that the only real question left is whether Mrs. Clinton’s victory will be a landslide?

Can we all agree that, only in America, could Ryan  Lochte, turn his Rio lies into advertising gold?

Can we all agree, the Virginia diners who declined to leave a tip because they thought their server was not American, deserve all the ridicule they are getting?

Can we all agree the confrontation between Iranian and American battleships in the Persian Gulf sounds like the action of a rogue captain rather than a national policy? Or is that just wishful thinking?

Can we all agree that court decisions on bathroom choices leave us feeling that justice is not blind to politics and public opinion?

Can we all agree President Obama’s expansion of the marine national reserve will just add to his environmental legacy?

Can we all agree, speaking of the environment, California Governor Gerry Brown made sure his state maintained their place as the nation’s environmental capital?

Can we all agree, we are cheered by the victory of a homeless woman who successfully argued that the Social Security Administration owed her $100,000?

Can we all agree that it apparently takes a court to make some sense out of the French burkini ban?

Can we all agree, it won’t be too long before interest rates rise, marking the official end of The Great Recession?

Can we all agree this week’s gun protest at the University of Texas was  inspiring?

Can we all agree Herb Alpert’s Foundation deserves a round of applause for donating $10.1 million to Los Angeles City College to provide scholarships for every music major?

Can we all agree that putting a treaty, ending a 50-year war, to a nationwide vote seems a bit crazy?

Can we all agree, the Trump campaign’s efforts to undermine Mrs. Clinton, by alleging she has health issues, is too funny for serious comment?

Can we all agree, it’s almost as funny as Mr. Trump’s plea for support from African-American voters: “What do you have to lose?”

Can we all agree that we all feel a bit safer knowing there might be a planet that can support life, just 4.25 light years away? That’s roughly 25 trillion miles.

Can we all agree the Turkish/US invasion and capture of a Syrian town was more about pushing back the Kurds, than it was about ISIS?

Can we all agree we are not surprised that the Berkeley soda tax reduced consumption of sugary beverages in the city? Of course, it could be folks just did their shopping next door in Oakland.

And finally:

Can we all agree it’s a bit sad to know that soon  there will only be one remaining Howard Johnson‘s left in the United States?

And, for all of my female readers who are having trouble finding new clothes at the mall, I thought you might enjoy this from the Sarah Halzack.

Can we all agree these are not the kinds of fireworks Americans wanted to celebrate the Fourth?

Can we all agree, this must stop?

Can we all agree that, as Newt Gingrich noted this week, it’s impossible for white Americans to understand why black Americans have grown to fear the police?

Can we all agree that no-one should wind up dead for having a broken tail light on their car?

Can we all agree no-one should wind up dead after they are pinned to the ground by police?

Can we all agree that no police officer should wind up dead while protecting a peaceful protest on their city’s streets?

Can we all agree it’s too bad that Dallas police, apparently a city known for it’s community policing, will now be known for the deaths of five officers?

Can we all agree that someone needs to step up and lead us in healing?

Can we all agree the NRA is speaking volumes by their silence?

Can we all agree this has gone way beyond politics?

Can we all agree it will be a real tragedy if nothing changes?

Can we all agree we are a bit unnerved by the use of a robot to kill the cornered suspect in  Dallas?

Can we all agree we are amazed at the calm, un-emotional actions of Diamond Reynolds as she live-streamed the aftermath of Philando Castile’s murder?

Can we all agree the Texas Lieutenant Governor has too be the dumbest politician in the state, for criticizing protestors who ran from the gun fire in Dallas?.

Can we all agree, just when you think it cannot get any nuttier, a former politician has to chime in and threaten the President?

Can we all agree that confusion, chaos, panic and desperation are not the words you want to see when you are the majority party and need to nominate a new Speaker of the House?

Can we all agree that rumors of marital infidelity will not help?

Can we all agree that the problems being faced in the House are the same as the ones faced by establishment GOP presidential candidates: How to deal with far right?

Can we all agree that we would not want to be Paul Ryan, who is apparently, the GOP’s last best hope for Speaker?

Can we all agree that with two new shooting incidents on college campuses on the same day the President is visiting Roseburg, the pressure is mounting  on politicians to do something about gun control?

Can we all agree that when 11-year-old’s shoot their 8 year-old playmates, or shoppers start firing weapons at shoplifters, the answer is not, more guns?

Can we all agree that there is not one GOP candidate who made a coherent comment about the Roseburg shooting or guns in America?

Can we all agree that the decision to end the training program for moderate rebels in Syria comes about $500 million too late?

Can we all agree that when your missiles land about 600 miles from their intended target (Syria)  and in an ally’s territory, (Iran) you may have an operational issue?

Can we all agree that the stabbing of French train hero Spencer Stone is a real tragedy?

Can we all agree that while California Governor Jerry Brown may still have his detractors, he has done a remarkable job of making  California the envy of many other progressive states by signing  legislation on the environment, equal pay,  assisted suicide  and even medical marijuana?

Can we all agree that the US Air Force was used by the Afghan army to get back at MSF for treating wounded Taliban soldiers?

Can we all agree that the US was caught flat footed by the Russian entrance into the Syrian conflict?

Can we all agree that this week’s corporate screw-up award has to go to General Mills who was forced to recall millions of boxes of gluten free cereal, because they contained gluten?

Can we all agree that the President appears to be waiting for the Russians to fail in Syria before he does anything?

Can we all agree that the new fantasy sports leagues have a real PR problem which they will probably overcome, because Americans love legalized gambling?

Can we all agree that, despite what the presidential candidates think, the new Pacific trade pact will probably win Congressional approval, because the Republicans support it?

Can we all agree that any journalist (George Stephanopoulos) who donates to anything associated with a politician, doesn’t understand his job?

Can we all agree that Tom Brady has already been convicted of cheating in the court of public opinion, now he’s just trying to play in a few more games?

Can we all agree that for the second time in two weeks we have lost a true prince of the arts? This time it was B.B. King.

B.B.KIng

B.B.KIng

Can we all agree that Jeb Bush had a pretty bad week of campaigning?

Can we all agree that we’re not surprised that even Democrats wanted a say in any deal with Iran?

Can we all agree that when an auction house can sell over $1 billion in art in one week, you can’t help wondering if there was a better use for the money?

Can we all agree that when California Governor Jerry Brown tells critics of his water tunnel plan to ‘shut up,’ he’s not really adding to the political discourse?

Can we all agree that we are disappointed on so many levels that President Obama allowed an oil company to begin drilling in the Arctic?

Can we all agree that Seymour Hersh’s revelations about the raid on the Bin Laden compound, is worth one big yawn?

Can we all agree that when the new leader of Saudi Arabia refuses to come to Washington to meet with the President we have a problem?

Can we all agree that no-one is disappointed that American Idol will end after one more season?

Can we all agree that Verizon’s decision to buy AOL is testament to how great a salesman Tim Armstrong is?

Can we all agree that despite the tragic loss of life in this week’s Amtrak crash, the GOP has no intention of giving them more money for safety, or anything else?

Can we all agree that after The President’s trade bill was defeated one day and passed the next, we’re a little confused?

Can we all agree that if the Republicans in the House could quit taking votes on issues that have no chance of becoming law, they might actually get some credit for getting some things done?
