CWAA: Can We All Agree – 8/27/16 edition

August 27, 2016

Can we all agree, this week we are all Italian? Unfortunately, it appears this will not be the last earthquake the country suffers.

Quake damage in Amatrice, Italy (AP photo)

Quake damage in Amatrice, Italy (AP photo)

Can we all agree, despite what her PR machine claims, Heather Bresch, the president of the firm which sells the EpiPen is a poster child for what’s wrong with the US drug industry? And her father, the senator, knows it.

Can we all agree Bernie Sanders’s new political group is off to a bad start?

Can we all agree Maine Governor Paul Lepage is the only politician who can out-Trump, Donald Trump? Even the Donald doesn’t have a newspaper apologizing to the nation.

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s pivot under Kellyanne Conway, his new campaign manager, has everyone scratching their heads?

Can we all agree if Hillary Clinton was running against a traditional candidate, such as Jeb Bush, her email problems would really make her a serious underdog?

Can we all agree that the only real question left is whether Mrs. Clinton’s victory will be a landslide?

Can we all agree that, only in America, could Ryan  Lochte, turn his Rio lies into advertising gold?

Can we all agree, the Virginia diners who declined to leave a tip because they thought their server was not American, deserve all the ridicule they are getting?

Can we all agree the confrontation between Iranian and American battleships in the Persian Gulf sounds like the action of a rogue captain rather than a national policy? Or is that just wishful thinking?

Can we all agree that court decisions on bathroom choices leave us feeling that justice is not blind to politics and public opinion?

Can we all agree President Obama’s expansion of the marine national reserve will just add to his environmental legacy?

Can we all agree, speaking of the environment, California Governor Gerry Brown made sure his state maintained their place as the nation’s environmental capital?

Can we all agree, we are cheered by the victory of a homeless woman who successfully argued that the Social Security Administration owed her $100,000?

Can we all agree that it apparently takes a court to make some sense out of the French burkini ban?

Can we all agree, it won’t be too long before interest rates rise, marking the official end of The Great Recession?

Can we all agree this week’s gun protest at the University of Texas was  inspiring?

Can we all agree Herb Alpert’s Foundation deserves a round of applause for donating $10.1 million to Los Angeles City College to provide scholarships for every music major?

Can we all agree that putting a treaty, ending a 50-year war, to a nationwide vote seems a bit crazy?

Can we all agree, the Trump campaign’s efforts to undermine Mrs. Clinton, by alleging she has health issues, is too funny for serious comment?

Can we all agree, it’s almost as funny as Mr. Trump’s plea for support from African-American voters: “What do you have to lose?”

Can we all agree that we all feel a bit safer knowing there might be a planet that can support life, just 4.25 light years away? That’s roughly 25 trillion miles.

Can we all agree the Turkish/US invasion and capture of a Syrian town was more about pushing back the Kurds, than it was about ISIS?

Can we all agree we are not surprised that the Berkeley soda tax reduced consumption of sugary beverages in the city? Of course, it could be folks just did their shopping next door in Oakland.

And finally:

Can we all agree it’s a bit sad to know that soon  there will only be one remaining Howard Johnson‘s left in the United States?

And, for all of my female readers who are having trouble finding new clothes at the mall, I thought you might enjoy this from the Sarah Halzack.

Can we all agree that the rest of the week’s news pales in comparison to the gun violence, but it should be noted?

Can we all agree that Serena Williams deserves her spot atop the list of best athletes of this generation?

Can we all agree, no-one on this side of the Atlantic really understands what’s going on in Britain?

Can we all agree that we are all sure that the woman the British choose to lead them, will need the fortitude of Margret Thatcher to lead them out of their mess?

Can we all agree that FBI chief James Comey, apparently wanted to clear Hillary Clinton of any criminal wrongdoing regarding her email server, but felt he had to be severely critical to placate the GOP?

Can we all agree the Republican hearings the day after the FBI announcement were a waste of time?

Can we all agree Donald Trump wasted a great opportunity to attack Hillary, by choosing instead to extoll the virtues of Saddam Hussein?

Can we all agree that Donald Trump has no knowledge of the US constitution?

Can we all agree Trump’s bid to unify the GOP in Washington behind him, was pretty much a failure?

Can we all agree Bernie Sanders didn’t have much luck either when he addressed his Democratic colleagues?

Can we all agree that Republican comparisons between the Clinton case and convicted general David Petraeus are absurd on their face?

Can we all agree that an economy that creates almost 300,000 jobs in a month is doing pretty well?

Can we all agree the British report criticizing the actions of former Prime Minister Tony Blair over the Iraq invasion, is really an indictment of George Bush?

Can we all agree the West has become desensitized to the violence, suicide bombers and murder in the Mid-East?

Can we all agree President Obama’s decision to leave 8500 troops in Afghanistan was really no big surprise?

Can we all agree that we want to believe the sexual harassment charges against Fox News president Roger Ailes?

Can we all agree that Americans take NASA’s remarkable achievements, like sending a satellite to orbit Jupiter, for granted?

Can we all agree Elie Wiesel deserves a permanent memorial for making sure ‘we never forget?’

Can we all agree who have no idea why the openly gay CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, would want to hold a fund raiser for House Speaker Paul Ryan?

Can we all agree that it’s a bit disheartening to know it took the state of California a month to count the ballots from last month’s primary? In case you missed it, Hillary won.

Can we all agree that Kevin Durant has now made the Warriors the most unloved team in the NBA?

and finally:

Can we all agree there is probably an easy way to find out why an unremarkable English village has sudden;y become a must-see stop for Chinese tourists? Just ask them…

Justice Scalia's funeral, Saturday (Washington Post Photo)

Justice Scalia’s funeral, Saturday (Washington Post Photo)

Can we all agree that Hillary supporters are pleased, but not as pleased as they would be if she won in Nevada by say, 30%.

Can we all agree that everyone except the GOP establishment, considers Trump the front runner?

Can we all agree that Jeb Bush was a terrible candidate and really cannot blame anyone but himself?

Can we all agree the only one who thinks Ben Carson has any business staying in the race, is Dr. Ben? Is Kasich next to go?

Can we all agree that, as the media write off Ted Cruz because he lost the Evangelical vote, you have to wonder if it was the candidate or the dirty tricks campaign, that turned off voters?

Can we all agree the GOP response to the death of Justice Antonin Scalia would have embarrassed him?

Can we all agree he would have favored a strict adherence to the words of the constitution as it is written?

Can we all agree that the conspiracy theories now making the rounds on the internet are just mind boggling?

Can we all agree that however things turn out, the battle for the Supreme Court will be the epic struggle of the decade?

Can we all agree that even Mitch McConnell might admit that he made a tactical mistake in opposing a nominee for the court, even before most people knew Justice Scalia had died?

Can we all agree that had it not been for the passing of Justice Scalia, the President’s trip to Cuba next month would have been the biggest story of the week?

Can we all agree the real truth about what’s really going on in the battle against ISIS lies somewhere between here and there?

Can we all agree that we lost two literary giants this week in Harper Lee and Umberto Eco?

Can we all agree that the ‘tech bro’ in San Francisco who complained about having to deal with the city’s chronic homeless problem, is just a graphic encapsulation of  the battle our politicians face every day?

Can we all agree, now that the Aliso gas field leak has been sealed the only thing remaining, is to figure out how many lawsuits the gas company will face?

Can we all agree that no-one could have predicted that  the GOP presidential primary could turn on a debate between a candidate and the Pope?

Mayor's response to Jeb Bush

Mayor’s response to Jeb Bush – America

Can we all agree, speaking of politics, Jeb Bush may have had the worst week in Washington?

Can we all agree that New York Mayor Debiasio’s response to Mr. Bush’s tweet of his engraved gun, was just perfect?

Can we all agree that the fight between Apple CEO Tim Cook and the FBI has now become a PR battle, although it looks destined to wind up in the Supreme Court?

Can we all agree that China’s placement of missiles on a disputed island in the South China Sea seems an odd provocation, given the timing? Maybe they hoped no-one would notice.

Can we all agree that while we may be happy that OPEC members have agreed on output targets, it was more to calm markets than to actually effect output?

Can we all agree that the EU didn’t have much choice but to give in to David Cameron’s demands in hope of keeping them attached, however tenuously to the continent?

Happy New Year. Thanks for reading.

CXZ7akyWkAEVtRz

Some tips for the coming election year

Can we all agree that hearing about the deaths of Wayne Rogers and Natalie Cole was not a great way to start a new year?

Can we all agree that the worst New Year’s Eve broadcast had to be Fox News, which insisted on allowing the presidential candidates an opportunity to offer gratuitous and meaningless comments throughout their show?

Can we all agree Mr. Obama is at least following through on his promise to do something about improving gun control in the country. Surveys suggest most of the country supports some kind of action, but the GOP and NRA are already up in arms. Whatever he does it won’t help the 27 Americans killed by guns over Christmas.

Can we all agree that the Iranian response to the administration’s decision to consider more sanctions, over the Iranians use of long rang missiles, would be pretty funny, if the topic were not so serious?

Can we all agree that retired surgeon Ben Carson’s presidential campaign continues to be in deep trouble?

Can we all agree that Jeb Bush is also in trouble? Now, he’s c challenging the schoolyard bully (Mr. Trump)  to a one-on-one fight.

Can we all agree that Carly Fiorina brought politics to a new low when the Stanford grad decided she should root for Iowa in the Rose Bowl?

Can we all agree that the list of folks insulted by Mr. Trump is a little like the old Nixon’s enemies list – if you’re not on it, you feel a little let down?

Can we all agree that it appears the mainstream GOP Presidential candidates are hoping Trump will self-destruct, and are now focusing on bashing each other in an attempt to stand out?

Can we all agree that no-one even remembered that George Pataki was running for the GOP nomination, until he dropped out?

Can we all agree that this week’s freak weather condition will just become more common if we don’t do something about global warming?

Can we all agree that the charges against Bill Cosby may not convince a jury but he’s already been found guilty in the court of public opinion?

Can we all agree that what the world really needed was a book of quotes from Russian President Vladimir Putin?

Can we all agree it seems a bit strange that a clip of Donald Trump appeared in an extremist recruitment video – after it was mentioned by Hillary Clinton?

Can we all agree that when the Republicans purposely manipulate the color of the President’s skin in campaign ads, they are playing to the racism they know continues to exist in this country?

Can we all agree that very few people were surprised that no indictments were handed down in the shooting to Tamir Rice?

Can we all agree that  every new story written about teenager Ethan Crouch and his mother makes everyone believe he never deserved the lenient sentence he received after killing four people in a car accident?

Trying to coax an elephant seal back into the water.

Trying to coax an elephant seal back into the water.

Can we all all agree that all the dire warnings about the potential spread of the Ebola virus seem like a distant memory now that Guinea has been declared ebola free?

Can we all agree that while it’s good news the Iraqi’s have retaken Ramadi, they are a long way from taking back control of their country?

Can we all agree the methane gas leak at Porter Ranch just outside Los Angeles may be the most under-publicized environmental disaster of 2015?

Can we all agree that the best story of the week may be the tale of the wayward, pregnant elephant seal who tied up traffic in Sonoma for hours as officials tried to coax her back into the water? Please, no jokes about why the seal crossed the road.

Can we all agree that the photo below, released by the North Korean government, of their leader Kim Jong Un watching a musical performance is disturbing on a number of levels?

Reuters photo

Reuters photo

Can we all agree that John Beohner’s ability to ‘clean the barn’ for a new Speaker, just shows how dysfunctional the GOP ultra-conservative members have been?

Can we all agree that Paul Ryan’s honeymoon will last until the House begins consideration of the next big budget bill?

Can we all agree  that  White House attempts to minimize the number of special forces troops being sent to Syria will not work? It’s still boots on the ground.

Can we all agree that as long as China’s economy continues to slow, most families will continue to have only as many children as they feel they can support – one?

Can we all agree that even with the economy slowing the US will remain a primary growth engine for the rest of the world?

Can we all agree that the GOP debate proved the Republican’s do not have a realistic plan to govern the country?

Can we all agree that the facts were few and far between throughout the debate?

Can we all agree that Jeb Bush simply does not project the kind of leadership many Americans want? His decline has nothing to do with his politics.

Can we all agree that Marco Rubio should resign his senate seat unless he wants to cast a vote at least once in a while?

Can we all agree that the GOP’s displeasure with the media is based on the fact that they don’t really want to answer tough questions? It will be very interesting to see what kind of questions they get  when the Wall Street Journal hosts the next debate.

Can we all agree that there were several other alternatives the now-fired police officer might have tried before assaulting a student in a South Carolina classroom?

Can we all agree that the student knew exactly what she was doing, when she apparently told her classmates to film the encounter?

Can we all agree that the United States should continue to send ships within 12 miles of the disputed ‘islands’ in the South China Sea?

Can we all agree that replacing Donald Trump with Ben Carson on the GOP presidential ticket would make little difference in the final outcome of the election?

Can we all agree that every time a new study comes out telling us what we should or should not eat, we just get more confused?

Can we all agree that the move to impeach the IRS commissioner just makes the GOP look more desperate to score political points? Apparently they didn’t watch last week’s Benghazi hearing.

Can we all agree that at this week’s candidate debate,   even the worst performing Democratic presidential candidate sounded better than almost all the GOP candidates at previous debates?

Can we all agree that the real proof of Hillary’s performance will be her improved standing in polls over the weekend?

Can we all agree that VP Joe Biden has now missed his chance to get in to the Democratic primary?

Mud slides in Los Angeles (LA Times photo)

Can we all agree that is was refreshing to hear candidates discuss issues rather than looks, and hair style? The fact that no one left the debate feeling they were insulted, marginalized, or belittled, should not have been remarkable, but it was.

Can we all agree that we never really believed the President when he said all the troops would be out of Afghanistan when he left office?

Can we all agree that mud slides in LA, months before the predicted El Nino are an ominous start to  winter on the West Coast.

Can we all agree that the Universirty of California at Berkeley gave itself a huge black eye in the way it handled the sexual harassment case of astronomer Geoffrey Marcy?

Can we all agree that even the Russian’s were not surprised when investigators said a missile made by Russia brought down the Malaysian Airliner over eastern Ukraine? Following the logic in their twisted response was nearly impossible.

Can we all agree that the new increase in violence in Israel does not bode well for any chance of peace in the near future?

Can we all agree that while everyone on the East Coast has a story about USAir (formerly Allegheny Airlines) we are sad to see the name disappear into American Airlines?  My favorite is the time I was allowed to get on the wrong plane and wound up in Washington DC instead of Boston, MA.

Can we all agree that even Tesla’s description of their software for self-driving cars should make owners nervous?

Can we all agree that, despite what I said last week, fantasy football betting may be in real trouble now that Nevada has declared that it is, indeed, gambling? As they say, if it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck you can be pretty sure, it’s not a horse.

Can we all agree that if the old saying, “follow the money,” has any application to presidential politics, Jeb Bush is in a lot of trouble?

Can we all agree that Playboy’s decision to give up nude photographs will have little impact on their sales, since most men  bought it for the articles anyway?

Can we all agree that when the GOP decides Paul Ryan is too liberal, they have decided that John Boehner may not be so bad after all?

Can we all agree that Turkey may be at a real crossroads as new elections loom?

and finally:

Can we all agree that, even in American League cities, the Mets-Cubs National League Championship series will be must see TV.

Can We All Agree – Debate Edition

September 19, 2015

The GOP lineup

The GOP lineup– with Jeb Bush on his toes

Can we all agree that three hours was just too long for a debate – whether you’re wearing wing tips or high heels?

Can we all agree that CNN strategy to encourage ‘debate’ between the candidates was a disaster?

Can we all agree that it pains many Americans (including me)  to admit that Fox did a better job as a debate host?

Can we all agree that it’s tough to take any of the GOP candidates seriously until they really focus on addressing major issues such as immigration, climate change, income inequality or a host of others?

Can we all agree that if there was a ‘winner’ it was probably Carley Fiorina?

Can we all agree that the other 10 candidates were determined not to let Mr. Trump control the debate? They failed, but at least they were ready.

Can we all agree that Ms Fiorina will now face new scrutiny over her tenure at Hewlett Packard?

Can we all agree that this debate may signal the high point for the Trump campaign as he begins a long slow decline in the polls?

Can we all agree that at least three of the folks in the two debates will be gone before the October 28th debate in Colorado? Or is that just wishful thinking?

Can we all agree that with five more debates planned, the GOP is in serious danger of creating election fatigue?

Can we all agree, that real facts were is short supply? The fact checkers have had a field day with almost every candidate?

Can we all agree that Jimmy Fallon’s interview with Hillary would have been much better if it wasn’t quite so self serving?

Can we all agree that for Twitter fans, the highlight of the evening might have been Bernie Sanders snarky debate commentary?

RepublicanDebate-slide-QF8U-jumbo

Can we all agree that the GOP debate was the top  news and entertainment show this week?

Can we all agree that who won and who lost is probably dependent of who you were backing before the debate took place?

Can we all agree that, to our amazement, the biggest winner was not any of the 10 candidates but the three people asking the questions? They stayed away from some important topics, but at least they didn’t just lob softballs all night.

Can we all agree that Donald Trump doesn’t seem to care who he insults?

Can we all agree that the JV-debate beforehand was a waste of time?

Can we all agree that the divisions in the GOP were on full display?

Can we all agree that Jeb Bush was probably the real loser since he did little to separate himself from the rest of the pack? The fact that he looked stiff and unprepared did not help either.

Can we all agree that it’s a shame that we will not have a chance to get Jon Stewart’s take on the GOP show?

Can we all agree that we owe a debt of thanks to Mr. Stewart for showing us all how to be political cynics?

Can we all agree that it’s amazing there could be a two-hour debate without one word on income inequality, race relations, Citizens United or climate change? Just ask Bernie Sanders.

Can we all agree that despite the GOP predictions that we are headed in the wrong direction, an additional 215,000 jobs in one month is a pretty good direction?

Bernie Sanders

Bernie Sanders

Can we all agree that the timing of Sen. Chuck Schumer’s announcement that he would oppose the Iran nuclear treaty was deliberate, probably in the hope that no-one would notice?

Can we all agree that the battle over the Iran treaty is far from over?

Can we all agree that the funding battle over Planned Parenthood may be the biggest red herring ever concocted by the GOP?

Can we all agree that it’s about time the administration took on the coal lobby over power plant emissions?

Can we all agree that there will be no winners in the ‘Deflategate’ controversy and that both sides have an interest in paying attention to the judge, and settling the case – quickly?

Can we all agree that with major events in New Hampshire and Cleveland this week the 2016 campaign has an official starting point?

Can we all agree that the Minnesota dentist who killed Cecil the Lion may actually be spurring some change in the big business of big game hunting?

Cecil the Lion

Cecil the Lion

Can we all agree that Hillary Clinton’s Friday night document dump of tax returns, medical records and emails just adds to suspicion about her campaign?

Can we all agree that Jeb Bush’s tremendous lead in PAC money raising won’t do him much good if he continues to stumble on the campaign trail?

Can we all agree that Californians deserve a healthy slap on the back for exceeding government requests for water conservation? Now if the farmers would do the same, maybe we can manage the drought until El Nino gets here.

Can we all agree that no one doubts the wreckage found in the Indian Ocean is from the downed Malaysian airliner? But few seem to know if it will help figure out what happened.

Can we all agree that with slow but steady growth continuing, the economy will be a major campaign plus for the eventual Democratic nominee?

Can we all agree that both the NFL and Tom Brady look pretty bad as ‘Deflategate’ heads to court? Are you ready for some actual football?

Can we all agree that the murder of a Cincinnati motorist over a missing license plate, maybe the best argument ever made for police body cameras?

Can we all agree that Cincinnati police must be doing something right because they have managed to avoid the same kind of violence that broke out in Baltimore and Ferguson?

Can we all agree that the Albuquerque police dispatcher who hung up on a 911 call from someone trying to save a shooting victim, needs to be prosecuted for something?

Can we all agree that the Los Angeles city council should get some support for trying to ban ammunition magazines, but the NRA will have the last word?

Can we all agree that income inequality was never more evident that in new statistics showing home ownership at its lowest level in 45 years?

Can we all agree that it’s good to know we can all sing “Happy Birthday’ without fear of a copywrite infringement lawsuit?24-cosby-lede-feature

Can we all agree that The New York Magazine cover of Bill Cosby accusers may be the best cover, ever?

Can we all agree that Boston’s decision to turn down an Olympic bid is great news for a region that doesn’t need all the headaches and debt? As a native of the area I’m probably a bit biased but I feel the same way about San Francisco.

Can we all agree, speaking of the Olympics, that no-one was really looking forward to a trip to Kazakhstan for the 2022 winter Olympics?

Can we all agree that Turkey’s entry into Mideast fighting adds a dangerous new dimension, as it threatens to bring NATO into the battle?

Can we all agree that Mike Huckabee’s comments on the Iran nuclear treaty are disgusting, no matter how you feel about the issue?

Can we all agree that it’s about time the United states government admitted that they needed to do something about Chinese hacking into our computer systems. Of course the list of other countries, doing the same thing is getting pretty long.
