CWAA: Can We All Agree™ – 5/27/17 edition

May 27, 2017

Can we all agree after 8 years of trying to recover from the poor image created by the Bush administration, it only took one visit to Europe  from Donald Trump to destroy the nation’s reputation?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s visit to NATO,  not only showed his poor understanding of how the alliance works but his childish attitude in elbowing a fellow leader out of the way to get to the front row of a photo op?

Can we all agree the Europeans seem to have changed Mr. Trump’s views on climate change, but it’s doubtful his EPA chief will change course?

Can we all agree trying to make sense of the administration’s policy on immigration gets tougher by the week?

Can we all agree if the Senate and FBI probe of Russian influence is indeed focused on Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump is in deep trouble?

Can we all agree there was no need to discus secret back-channel communications two months before the inauguration?

Can we all agree, by requesting campaign documents it appears some Senate Repblicans may have finally  realized they need to push back against Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree, things were pretty quiet when Donald Trump was off twitter and his staff could manage his message?

Can we all agree the victory of Montana’s new GOP representative seems to prove Trump’s claim that he could murder someone in the middle of Midtown  and no one would care? Here’s a guy who assaulted a reporter and voters still elected him and the House doesn’t even care.

Can we all agree whatever the Senate comes up with on healthcare reform will have a tough time passing that chamber but an even rougher time in the House?

Can we all agree, it’s probably not a surprise that Hillary Clinton is going after Mr. Trump, but when she’s joined by John Boehner you know the President has a real problem?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s plan to quickly find a new head of the FBI is stymied by his own actions?

Can we all agree any notion that the swamp is being drained should be put to rest when the White House releases the lobbyist waivers it has granted in order to fill government positions?

Can we all agree the swamp is now a water hazard for the Professional Golfers Association?

Can we all agree it would be tough to prove any Russian influence on any president other than Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree Michael Flynn’s decision to fight a congressional subpoena stands in stark contrast to former campaign chief Paul Manafort– although both men will probably face criminal charges?

Can we all agree, the Supreme Court is facing some weighty decisions that will test it’s political independence?

Can we all agree touting an approval rating that is among the lowest of any new President is not smart politics?

Can we all agree the Senate’s newly approved sanctions on Iran may be counter-productive?

Can we all agree the contrast between Mr. Trump’s visit to Europe and that of former President Obama could not be more dramatic?

Can we all agree the budget office report on the GOP health plan was just about what everyone expected? Now the Senate can officially reject it.

Can we all agree, it takes a lot for the press corps to feel sorry for Sean Spicer, but Mr. Trump managed to do it this week when he excluded the devote Catholic from his meeting with The Pope?

Can we all agree The Pope was a master of ‘not-so-subtle’ messaging in his choice of gifts for Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree Sean Hannity is learning the real implications of fake news?

Can we all agree the British response to leaks from the investigation of the Manchester bombing was much milder than what Mr. Trump might have said if the situation was reversed?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s cabinet secretaries, Betsy DeVos, Scott Pruitt and Ben Carson,  continue to display an uncommon lack of understanding  about what most Americans want?

Can we all agree all sides of the debate seem to agree Mr. Trump’s budget is dead on arrival, but he has managed to frame the debate so we will wind up with the lesser of two evils?

Can we all agree the downgrade of China’s credit rating will do little to affect their position as a center of world commerce?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s contined embrace of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is, in some ways, more troubling than his admiration for Vladimir Putin?

Can we all agree the US may finally pay attention to what’s happening in Turkey, now that an NBA player has been accused of being a terrorist?

Can we all agree no one seems to care that the Carrier jobs Mr. Trump claimed to have saved are now moving to Mexico?

Can we all agree Melania seems to feel that same way about her husband as most Democrats?

And finally:

Two of the more depressing stories of the week for Democrats: one GOP Congressman found support still strong in his district and what Trumpcare might look like based on the problems in Iowa.

And, once again, the deterioration of the nation’s moral fabric was on full display with 2 murders in Oregon and an ugly scene aboard an airplane.

and:

Anyone hoping to make the long romantic drive up Route 1 along the California coast is apparently going to have a long wait.

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 3/12/16 edition

March 12, 2016

Can we all agree that Donald Trump’s non-repudiation repudiation of the violence at his campaign events will just encourage more violence?

Can we all agree that President’s list of finalists for the Supreme Court is pretty much as expected?

Can we all agree the GOP debate this week was a lot more civil, but facts were few and far between?

Can we all agree that, all things considered, we would have much rather watched the state dinner and fashion show for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau?

Can we all agree we have not heard the last of the Yosemite trademark case?

Can we all agree that the latest astronomical discovery is yuuuge?

Can we all agree that given their vote totals, neither Ms Fiorina’s nor Mr.Carson’s endorsement will change the GOP primary race that much?

Can we all agree that Hillary Clinton may win the Democratic nomination, but other than the second debate she has not inspired confidence, she can beat a Republican opponent?

Can we all agree that Bernie Sander’s win in Michigan may be the kick in the pantsuit that she needs to end the complacency among her staff and her supporters?

Can we all agree she seems to have convinced Michael Bloomberg that she can win?

Can we all agree that while some Latinos may be registering to vote, just to oppose Donald Trump, we’re not sure it’s the movement some newspapers are writing about?

Can we all agree that when the two top officials of a non-profit fundraising group  are fired after a blistering audit report, it makes you think twice about  donations to any group?

Can we all agree that when the dean of one of the nation’s leading law schools is forced to resign for sexually harassing his executive assistant we are a long way from equality in the workplace?

Can we all agree that Fukushima will stand forever alongside Three Mile Island and Chernobyl as a warning that we may never be able to create safe nuclear power plants?

Can we all agree that just when we thought the Europeans were making progress in their handling of refugees, more countries closing their borders did not help?

Can we all agree that while she may have been the power behind the throne, Nancy Reagan has made sure that her legacy is one of true love?

Can we all @gree that, love it or hate it, Ray Tomlinson’s contribution to our lives will not be forgotten?

Can we all agree that Erin Andrews’ court victory this week is hardly something to celebrate?

Can we all agree that despite assurances from Brazil, we’re all a bit nervous about the summer olympics in Rio later this year?

Can we all agree that San Jose hotels are understandably upset that the Super Bowl was not the bonanza they expected? Expect no such complaints from San Francisco.

Can we all agree that no-one is really surprised that another Russian athlete was caught cheating? Even if she’s an attractive, blond tennis player.

and finally:

Can we all agree that Google’s latest hire really makes you question their ‘do no harm’ mantra?

Can we all agree Ben Carson’s departure from the race was as mystifying as his entrance?

Can we all agree that we’re not sure what emotion comes after ‘full panic’ or ‘desperation,’ but the GOP leadership is certainly there?

Can we all agree that no one really knows how the FBI’s email server investigation of Hillary Clinton will turn out, but it continues to give the GOP hope?

Can we all agree that Trump’s march to the GOP nomination is having an impact on the President’s strategy for naming a new Supreme Court Justice?

Can we all agree that, legal arguments aside, the FBI looks pretty incompetent in dealing with the software on the iPhone they want Apple to unlock ?

Can we all agree Chris Rock did a pretty good job addressing and defusing  the racial issues at this year’s Oscars?

Can we all agree the while it will be tough to measure the impact of United Nations sanctions on North Korea, it was encouraging to see China and the United States agreeing on something?

Can we all agree it’s nice to have Scott Kelly back on Earth after 340 days in space?

Can we all agree the geeks who attend the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival must be freaking out now that the President and First Lady have agreed to speak at the event?

Can we all agree we are a bit mystified how a judge can claim that he can teach 3-year-olds immigration law, so the government doesn’t have to provide them with an attorney?

Can we all agree, despite what some politicians say, the economy must be in pretty good shape if it created 242,000 new jobs last month?

Can we all agree we are slightly incredulous that a retiring police detective just ‘dropped off’ a knife he had kept, knowing that it came from the property where Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were murdered 22 years ago?

Can we ll agree that abortion rights activists were cheered yesterday when Justices blocked a Louisiana law with provisions similar to the Texas law argued earlier in the week?

Can we all agree we were saddened at the end of an era this week as we watched the names change in Yosemite National Park?

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 12/5/15 Edition

December 5, 2015

Can we all agree that it makes little difference to the victims that the FBI will investigate the shootings as terrorism?

Can we all agree that even modest changes, like those being proposed in California will have a tough time standing up to the NRA?

New York Daily News front page this week

New York Daily News front page this week

Can we all agree that no matter how many extra border checks we impose, as long as automatic weapons  and thousands of rounds of ammunition can be purchased legally, we will continue to have one resident murdered every 15 minutes in the US?

Can we all agree that, as Nicholas Kristof said in the New York Times, when it comes to gun control we’re not even trying?

Can we all agree that the sight of a Presidential candidate giving a speech from a gun range the day after a mass shooting is repugnant? What must be going through the minds of the victim’s families?

Can we all agree that it’s a bit startling to see the media being allowed to rummage through the  alleged murderer’s apartment just two days after the shooting?  Was it good journalism?

Can we all agree with the President that enough is enough?

Can we all agree that the addition of 211,000 new jobs is good news, despite what the GOP would have us believe?

Can we all agree that Lamar Smith’s antics as head of the House science committee would be amusing, if he wasn’t dealing with such a serious topic?

Can we all agree that the GOP would rather just embarrass the President than enact meaningful legislation that could help save the planet?

Can we all agree that despite all the speeches, it’s tough to figure out what’s really going on at the climate conference in Paris?

Can we all agree that some of the GOP speeches at the Republican Jewish Coalition were embarrassing? It might be Ben Carson’s swan song.

Can we all agree that allowing women into all combat roles was the logical conclusion to allowing them to serve in the military?

Can we all agree that the Secret Service is now officially a disaster?

Can we all agree that FIFA, soccer’s governing body, may be incapable of any meaningful reform?

Can we al agree that the NFL referees  have been just awful this year? There is no consistency, and phantom calls or clear rule misinterpretations are determining the outcome in too many games.

Rules for covering terrorism

Can we all agree that it was surprising to see Congress actually pass a spending bill that will become law? They approved a $300 billion highway spending measure.

Can we all agree that with  a little over 8 weeks until the Iowa caucuses and the GOP race still being described as a free-for all, the party is officially in panic mode?

Can we all agree that Dr. and Mr. Zuckerburg’s decision to give away 99% of their Facebook stock  will probably anger their offspring years from now when they argue about the leftover $500 million?

Can we all agree that the prospect of “Yes, We Have no bananas,” on future breakfast tables is disquieting?
