CWAA: Can We All Agree™ – 8/5/17 edition

August 5, 2017

Can we all agree, the August recess in Washington is really a much needed vacation for all of us?

Can we all agree, when a Republican Senate leaves town, but stays in session to prevent a Republican President from making any appointments, it’s not the Democrat’s fault?

Can we all agree, The President may soon be faced with signing a bill which effectively prevents him from firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller?

Can we all agree, Attorney General Jeff Sessions would have a much easier job if he didn’t have to waste time investigating leaks from the White House?

Can we all agree, it would be a disaster if the President fired his national security advisor, H. R. McMaster, since the Lt. General seems to be the only grownup in the White House?

This week's Newsweek cover

This week’s Newsweek cover

Can we all agree, it’s no surprise the President’s cabinet would be led by a pastor who doesn’t think women belong in politics?

Can we all agree, Newsweek Magazine may have reached a new level of political commentary with this week’s cover?

Can we all agree, until this week, when Mr. Mueller impanelled a grand jury in Washington, many of us suspected the investigation was going nowhere?

Can we all agree, John Kelley deserves credit for bringing some discipline to the White House – at least for one week?

Can we all agree, as the economy continues to improve, it’s clear Wall Street could care less about the Russian investigation?

Can we all agree, the NAACP’s travel advisory for Missouri, will deter travel by  more than just minorities or members of the LGBT community?

Can we all agree, The Pope is winning the PR battle with evangelical Christians?

Can we all agree, President Trump  probably thinks what happened in the Venezuela election is the same thing that happened last November when Hillary Clinton won the popular vote?

Can we all agree, the transcripts of the President’s conversations with the leaders of Mexico and Australia, just proves the public Trump and private Trump are interchangeable – and both are embarrassing?

Can we all agree, whether we like it or not, may not be on the horizon, even if researchers have been able to edit the DNA in cells?

Can we all agree, the proposed bill to limit immigration, runs counter to the bedrock principles our country was built on?

Can we all agree, presidential advisor Stephen Miller should be deported?

Can we all agree, the senators behind the immigration bill should either read Joe Aaron’s post on this blog, or listen to any of a dozen economists saying the same thing?

Can we all agree, Chelsea Clinton spoke for many of us when she defended the White House against charges that it was “a dump.’

Can we all agree, what Arizona Senator Jeff Flake says in his new book needed to be said, but it’s doubtful he’ll be a senator after the next election? But, you can count on seeing him in 2020.

Can we all agree, Millennials are welcome to the title of most populous generation – now they can get blamed for everything ?

Can we all agree, Donald Trump is once again playing to his base, which has dwindled to just 33%, by asking the attorney general to probe discrimination against whites in college admissions?

Can we all agree, When the President and Congress return from vacation it appears there may be a lot of bipartisan cooperation, although the President may not be included?

Can we all agree, the Chicago Cubs made a great PR move by giving Steve Bartman a World Series ring?

Can we all agree, it would appear the judicial system may be the only way to get the EPA to do its job?

Can we all agree, the best story of the week might be the judge who took the FAA to task for allowing the airlines to reduce the seat sizes and leg room?

Can we all agree, no one needed to be found guilty more than Martin Shkreli?

Can we all agree, the Attorney General, needs to do a better job of laying the groundwork for his case to force communities to back ICE activities?

and finally:

As I’ve said before we seem to have reached the beginning of the end for the internal combustion engine – even the GOP cannot turn back the forces of the free market.

April 1, 2017

Can we all agree, this Holocaust survivor in Sacramento, had the perfect retort to the head of the immigration service who was trying to defend the new immigration policies?

Can we all agree it’s remarkable, that we have an Attorney General who doesn’t seem to know federal law very well?

Can we all agree Mississippi State showed why we love college sports, when they upset The University of Connecticut, ending the team’s 111-game winning streak?

First rose of the season in my garden: Sombreuil

First rose of the season in my garden: Sombreuil

Can we all agree, there is no law against being rich, but the wealth, and lack of ethics in our new leadership team, puts to rest the notion that Donald Trump is draining any swamps in Washington?

Can we all agree the White House Press Secretary is desperately trying to divert attention from the Russian scandal that has now fully engulfed the White House?

Can we all agree, despite Senate promises of a full investigation of the White House ties to Russia, most Americans want a truly independent probe?

Can we all agree the startling rise in opioid deaths is a national health crises that needs to be addressed, before it becomes a ‘fact of life’ like the murder rate from guns?

Can we all agree it’s pretty clear the wrong person is running the Food and Drug Administration, when he has to recuse himself from decisions involving over 20 health care firms, because he has a conflict of interest?

Can we all agree Elon Musk’s reusable rocket technology is pretty remarkable?

Can we all agree, if news reports are to be believed, Rex Tillerson, our Secretary of State, seems lost, and that’s just what Mr. Trump wants?

Can we all agree, Mr. Trump’s trade policy seems to change direction like the wind? On the eve of the Chinese President’s visit to Mar A Lago, he’s threatening a trade war, while he backs off his campaign promise to rip up  NAFTA?

Can we all agree the Democrats are committed to making the appointment of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court difficult, as retribution for Mitch McConnell’s handling of the Merrick Garland nomination?

Can we all agree Venezuela has descended into chaos? Too bad the refugees trying to escape will not be welcomed here.

Can we all agree the Russians protesting the dictatorship of Vladimir Putin have no chance of forcing any changes?

Can we all agree it’s tough to take the continuing California drought warnings too seriously with the Sierra snowpack at 167% of normal?

Can we all agree, no Bay Area resident would disagree with polls showing many millennials want to leave because of high costs and traffic congestion?

Can we all agree there is no reason why Michael Flynn should be given immunity from prosecution, especially since no one expects he would tell the truth anyway?

Can we all agree, it’s good to see the suit against Trump University might allow defrauded students to get back almost 90% of what they paid, but we were kind of rooting for the plaintiff who wanted more, including an apology from Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree the North Carolina Legislature seems to have fooled everyone into thinking they actually changed their bathroom law?

Can we all agree  California Rep. Devin Nunes was a willing dupe in the White House’s plan to plant evidence supporting Mr. Trump’s wiretapping claims?

Can we all agree Chelsea Clinton needs to get used to people who doubt her claims that she will not run for office, especially when she continues to make public political statements?

Can we all agree public opinion on the change in internet privacy restrictions is really a generational divide with Baby Boomers worried about their data and younger people assuming everything they do on line is public anyway?

Can we all agree, as the battle over the Affordable Care Act continues Health Secretary Thomas Price will slowly chip away at coverage, while more GOP governors seem to have realized the ACA might help residents in their states?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s attempts to threaten the Freedom Caucus for their failure to support health care reform, just shows his political inexperience? Even the Democrats are laughing.

Can we all agree that the prison sentences handed out to aides of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie send a clear message to politicians everywhere (including the White House) about what the public finds acceptable?

Can we all agree, it makes no difference whether Ivanka Trump is paid or not, she should not be advising the President and running her company at the same time?

Can we all agree, it’s pretty funny seeing Mr. Trump using Bill Clinton’s defense trying to avoid a sexual assault lawsuit while he’s President?

Can we all agree, the thought of Mr. Trump throwing out the first pitch on Opening Day was too precious? Almost as fanciful as the thought of a second Trump hotel in Washington.

Can we all agree the women’s USA Hockey team struck a blow for equality this week?

Can we all agree, Maxine Waters and April Ryan did much the same in their own ways?

Can we all agree it doesn’t look like England’s exit from the EU will be as smooth as Theresa May had hoped?

Can we all agree Hong Kong has now officially lost it’s battle to remain a democracy?

Can we all agree that Mr. Trump’s moves to undo Mr. Obama’s clean air plan will do nothing to bring back coal jobs, do nothing to make America great again, give the rest of the world an excuse to follow suit and do nothing but allow our climate to change permanently?

and finally:

If you are really depressed about Alec Baldwin’s decision to cut back on his appearances on SNL, take a look at this compilation of the past year’s political sketches.

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 7/30/16 edition

July 30, 2016

Can we all agree the difference between the Democratic and Republican conventions was pretty stark?

Can we all agree that, based on the TV ratings, America seems pretty engaged in the political process, even though it’s the middle of summer and half the country is on vacation somewhere?

Can we all agree that if Ronald Reagan had been watching, he would have a lot more in common with the Democratic themes than with anything he would have heard at the GOP convention?

Can we all agree the most powerful, but least watched part of the convention may have been the speech by Khizr Khan, whose 27-year-old Muslim-American son was killed in Afghanistan?

Can we all agree with Sarah Silverman that Bernie Sanders supporters, who continue to be angry with Hillary Clinton are just “being ridiculous,” although polls seem to show that 90% of them, outside the convention hall support the Democratic nominee.

Can we all agree that Mrs. Clinton is not the best public speaker but then, President Obama, The First Lady, Joe Biden and Bill Clinton are pretty tough acts to follow?

Can we all agree that Chelsea sounds like she will take after her father as a public speaker?

Can we all agree Donald Trump has succeeded in totally embarrassing his own wife?

Can we all agree that Mr. Trump’s press conferences are must see TV, just to find out what he will be retracting the next day?

Can we all agree we’re not surprised that Mr. Trump’s favorite movie is about a billionaire megalomanic?

Can we all agree the next three months will be among the most decisive in the nation’s history?

Can we all agree the Clinton campaign should be pretty nervous if stories that her email accounts were hacked by Vladimir Putin’s geek squad are true?

Can we all agree that if DNC chair Debbie Wasserman had been more transparent in the way she handled the Democratic primary season, she might have been able to keep her job, even after the hacked emails were made public and the DNC had to issue an apology?

Can we all agree there was plenty of other news, but it was tough to find amid all the convention coverage?

Can we all agree the second quarter GDP figure makes it seem like the economy is a lot worse than it really is?

Can we all agree it was just a matter of time before our own mosquitos were found to carry the Zika virus? But don’t expect our representatives to take a break from their 7-week recess to return to Washington to do anything about it?

Can we all agree the best thing most Americans could do to show support for Europe would be to vacation there this summer and fall?

Can we all agree that while it’s great to see 6 more public officials charged in connection with the Flint water crises, I doubt the residents of that city feel any comfort when they look at what has been done to their children?

Can we all agree the most bittersweet story of the week might be the opening of the new Sandy Hook elementary school?

Can we all agree it was encouraging to know the Federal Court saw right through the North Carolina and Wisconsin legislatures’ attempts to restrict voting in their states?

Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert

Can we all agree it was fun to see Stephen Colbert revive his conservative alter ego, but troubling to find out the effort may be short lived?

Can we all agree it was probably only matter of time before state fairs began sponsoring marijuana pie contests?

Can we all agree that only the notorious RBG could get away with presiding over a mock court appeal by Shylock after a Venice production of the Merchant of Venice?

Can we all agree that Bill O’Reilly doesn’t seem to understand why people were outraged when he noted that the slaves who helped build the White House, mentioned by Michelle Obama, ‘were well fed?’

Can we all agree the closure of media outlets and detainment of 47 newspaper executives pretty much ends any doubts about whether Turkey is still a democracy?

Can we all agree that, as my radio colleague Rick Love noted, we are all a bit concerned what will happen when John Hinkley’s 91-year-old mother is no longer around to supervise his home detention?

Can we all agree that, once again, the NFL has escaped criticism for their faulty show of concern about concussions in young football players?

Can we all agree that in any other week the government’s decision to admit more refugees from Central America would have touched off a huge controversy?

Can we all agree that of all the senseless ISIS murders, the death of an 85-year old priest during morning mass in France was among the most pointless?

Can we all agree that basketball icon Michael Jordan deserves praise for literally putting his money where his mouth is, when he spoke out against violence this week?

Can we all agree that no one is looking forward to the kind of horror stories about unfinished Olympic facilities that we expect to read when the Games open next week? Not to mention the trials of the Russian athletes over doping allegations.

And finally two nice reads for the week:

One on what really happens at The baseball Hall of Fame and another on life in New York City – enjoy.
