CWAA: Can We All Agree – 11/5/16 edition

November 5, 2016

Can we all agree the World Series was a great diversion from the campaign? Maybe that’s why it had the highest TV ratings in 20 years.

Can we all agree both the Cubs and Indians deserved to win?

Fans outside Wrigley Field where the names of generations of Cubs faithful are listed. (AP photo)

Fans outside Wrigley Field where the names of generations of Cubs faithful are listed. (AP photo)

Can we all agree, like Red Sox fans in 2004, the most touching stories involved Cubs fans who were not alive to witness the historic win?

Can we all agree Bill Murray’s interview with Theo Epstein was a highlight of the post-win coverage:  not to mention the Budweiser ad featuring Harry Caray?

Can we all agree Chicago needed some good news given the record  number of murders that have occurred in the city this year?

Can we all agree the contrast in campaign style during the last week, mirrors the differences between the two presidential candidates?

Can we all agree it’s no surprise Mr. Trump’s income may not be all he says it is?

Can we all agree, even Mr. Trump probably thinks his latest newspaper endorsement is probably ill timed?

Can we all agree, reports about Mr. Tump’s ties to Russians who wanted to launder money through his projects, would doom most candidates, but not him?

Can we all agree that both sides are pulling out all the stops in the final week? Donald Trump brought out his wife and Hillary Clinton brought out the President: it was not a fair fight.

Can we all agree that, in one sense, this election will be like many others, since it all depends on voter turnout?

Can we all agree the strangest story of the week might be the link between the Trump campaign and a group of teenage hackers in Macedonia?

Can we all agree we owe the Washington Post a big thank you for compiling a list of the biggest lies of the campaign?

Can we all agree the one thing we are all happy about, is that there are only 3 days left to the campaign?

Can we all agree that based on his agency’s activity of the last 10 days, FBI director James Comey, has some real issues to deal with? I guess the question is, will he be around to deal with them?

Can we all agree the latest jobs report is good news for the Clinton campaign?

Can we all agree it would be hard to believe that two of Chris Christie’s top aides, who were were found guilty of conspiracy,  could have planned anything without his knowledge?

Can we all agree that Harvard did the right thing in canceling the men’s soccer team’s season, after their sexually explicit scouting report on the women’s team, came to light?

Can we all agree that Vladimir Putin has good reason to derail Mrs. Clinton’s campaign since, if she wins, he will have to deal with female leaders in Germany, England and the US ?

Can we all agree we’re a bit confused about the ‘controversy” between Beyonce and the CMAS?

Can we all agree, speaking of strange, that the leader of South Korea dependence on a mystic, conjures up memories of Nancy Reagan?

Can we all agree that conducting an opinion poll in North Korea can hardly be considered scientific?

Can we all agree Brexit just  got a lot more complicated this week, when the English courts said Parliament had to vote on the exit agreement?

Can we all agree the development of GMO’s was never about saving the world, but was more about making money?

Can we all agree when the Venezuelan president told city dwellers  to grow their own food, it sounded a lot like “let them eat cake.”

Can we all agree that Syrian President Assad is dealing with his own version of altered reality?

And finally, this week’s train wreck award goes to:

A Wisconsin high school that made up a story about students killed in a crash, to warn young people about the dangers of drunk driving,

or

The Bay Area Rapid Transit system which paid a janitor over $270,000 in pay and benefits for work in the last year.

Don’t forget to turn your clocks back.

#CWAA: Can We All Agree – 10/15/16 edition

October 15, 2016

Can we all agree, as the First Lady noted this week, no-one would have imagined that the presidential election would turn on crude ‘locker room’ comments by a candidate?

Can we all agree, it’s hard to believe that almost 200 nations can agree on action to combat climate change, but the Republican Party continues to deny that there is a problem?

Can we all agree, Donald Trump’s reaction to the latest charges that he sexually assaulted women over the last 30 years, typifies his reaction to most criticism? It’s also typical of many third graders.

Can we all agree President Obama has been surprisingly down to earth in his criticism of Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump is a creation of the GOP, although they won’t admit it?

Can we all agree it was remarkable to see GOP leaders abandon Mr. Trump last weekend and make a quick U-turn by Wednesday morning?

Can we all agree the world’s reaction to Haiti’s latest natural disaster has been unbelievably low key?

Can we all agree most of us were a bit confused when we learned Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize for literature, but eventually it made sense?

Can we all agree the Wells Fargo case has done more for the consumer financial protection bureau that any lobbying by Sen. Elizabeth Warren?

Can we all agree it’s great to know Ronald McDonald is keeping a low profile because of the recent clown scare? Now if we could mke that permanent we’d all be better off.

Can we all agree, it was nice to see that, for a change, no one criticized the President for striking back at Yemeni rebels who fired on US warships?

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 10/8/16 edition

October 8, 2016

Can we all agree we’re not really that surprised by the latest tape revealing Donald Trump’s attitude toward women?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s non-apology, apology will  become a classic in future public relations manuals?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s comments will easily bury the leaked details of Hillary Clinton’s paid speeches to Wall Street?

Can we all agree, the fact that the speech transcripts were taken from hacked emails, hurts their credibility, but adds to  the US contention that Russia is trying to influence the election?toles6-16-16-0001

Can we all agree Sunday night’s debate is really Mr. Trump’s last, slim chance to show non-supporters that he has anything approaching a presidential temperament?

October 1, 2016

Can we all agree GOP leaders are really off base in blaming the President because they regret passing a bill allowing 9/11 families to sue Saudi Arabia?

Can we all agree that if avoiding a government shutdown by a simple compromise on a measure to provide funding for Flint, MI, was that easy – what took so long?

Arnie and his army at The Masters.

Arnie and his army at the Masters.

Can we all agree that every Baby Boomer was a recruit in Arnie’s Army?

Can we all agree the State of California did the right thing by cutting off their relationship with Wells Fargo even though the bank is headquartered in the state?

Can we all agree, it’s one thing for an orchestra to go on strike, but quite another to walk out on a performance – especially over perceived past injustices?

Can we all agree that just because science can create a baby from three sets of DNA, doesn’t mean we should?

Can we all agree Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore deserved to be suspended permanently? Wanna bet he gets re-elected anyway?

Can we all agree Shimon Peres death seemed to unite world leaders for at least one day?

Can we all agree no-one was surprised that Russia was responsible for the missile which downed a Malaysian Airline passenger plane over the Ukraine?

Can we all agree that the mismanagement issues at our national parks arethreatening to overshadow the 100th birthday celebrations?

Can we all agree that Elon Musk’s ideas, like colonizing Mars, seem far fetched until he succeeds?

Can we all agree that this week’s presidential debate was great TV?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s debate performance has already been overshadowed by his performance the rest of the week?

Can we all agree that major newspapers who endorse a third party candidate, who is obviously unqualified,  are doing a disservice to their readers?

Can we all agree, in the same vein, Republican leaning newspapers, such as those in Cincinnati, Phoenix, Houston or Dallas,  who back a Democrat for the first time in history, deserve a lot of credit?

Can we all agree, Wisconsin is a perfect example of why voter ID laws just don’t work?

Can we all agree every time Donald Trump tweets, he just proves Hillary Clinton’s point that he does not have the right temperament to be President?

Can we all agree that whether Mr. Trump is criticizing former beauty queens or Bill Clinton, he really doesn’t have a leg to stand on?

Michelle Obama campaigns for Hillary Clinton

Michelle Obama campaigns for Hillary Clinton.

Can we all agree Mr. Trump would be better off trying to defend his foundations?

Can we all agree Michelle Obama may be the best weapon the Democrats have as they counter Mr. Trump’s irrationality?

Can we all agree that even if he gets a crowd of 10,000 people to a rally, it’s no where near the number of votes he needs to carry a state?

Can we all agree that even if Mr. Trump actually prepares for the next debate, he’s in a lot of trouble?

Can we all agree it was much too easy for Mrs. Clinton to bait Mr.  Trump into a discussion about his own misogyny?

Can we all agree the only person who doesn’t think Mrs. Clinton ‘won’ the debate (annotated transcript here), was her opponent?

Can we all agree that there is considerable sentiment in the medical community that Mr. Trump’s symptoms – dry mouth, nasal stuffiness, dilated pupils, hyperactive behavior – are typical of patient being treated with Adderall for ADHD?

Can we all agree that amid all the stories of bad interactions between police and the public, it’s nice to have at least one ‘feel good’ story?

And finally:

The strangest story of the week might be the rescue of stranded boater off Massachsetts who is now suspected of two murders.

and:

Baseball fans who grew up listening to their favorite team on the radio (think Curt Gowdy) will understand these remembrances of sports broadcaster Vin Scully.

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 9/24/16 edition

September 24, 2016

Can we all agree the root of all our race -related problems is the fact that no white person in America can really understand the Black-American experience? But maybe, the opening of the African American Museum today is a first step.

Can we all agree that whether or not the victims in Charlotte or Tulsa had weapons the real issue is police training which teaches officers to use lethal force as a first choice?

The new African American Museum in Washington, D.C. (Washington Post photo)

Can we all agree, if there were fewer guns on American streets a police officer’s job might not be so difficult?

Can we all agree we’ve all become too complacent about computer hacks that reveal our personal information? Rather than demanding more security we are all eager to believe computer security firm’s claims that they can protect us-after the fact.

Can we all agree that Congressional questioning of Wells Fargo and Mylan executives is political grandstanding at its finest, since there is no movement for any action against either firm?

Can we all agree, speaking of political grandstanding, the testimony of IRS commissioner John Koskinen probably was not what the GOP hardliners expected, when Democrats focused on Mr. Trump’s alleged IRS audit?

Can we all agree the debate by House and Senate members to override the President’s veto of a bill allowing  9/11 lawsuits against Saudi Arabia will be more of the same?

Can we all agree that CNN’s decision to, allow former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, to accept payment from the campaign while he is a commentator for the network, flies in the face of journalistic integrity?

Can we all agree, whether we like Facebook or not, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, deserve some praise for their $3 billion commitment to global health?

Can we all agree the Syrian cease-fire is over because the Russians and Syrian government were looking for an excuse to end it from the beginning?

Can we all agree Hillary Clinton probably breathed a sigh of relief when it became clear no more of her State Department emails would be released before the election?

Can we all agree, this week we are all Italian? Unfortunately, it appears this will not be the last earthquake the country suffers.

Quake damage in Amatrice, Italy (AP photo)

Quake damage in Amatrice, Italy (AP photo)

Can we all agree, despite what her PR machine claims, Heather Bresch, the president of the firm which sells the EpiPen is a poster child for what’s wrong with the US drug industry? And her father, the senator, knows it.

Can we all agree Bernie Sanders’s new political group is off to a bad start?

Can we all agree Maine Governor Paul Lepage is the only politician who can out-Trump, Donald Trump? Even the Donald doesn’t have a newspaper apologizing to the nation.

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s pivot under Kellyanne Conway, his new campaign manager, has everyone scratching their heads?

Can we all agree if Hillary Clinton was running against a traditional candidate, such as Jeb Bush, her email problems would really make her a serious underdog?

Can we all agree that the only real question left is whether Mrs. Clinton’s victory will be a landslide?

Can we all agree that, only in America, could Ryan  Lochte, turn his Rio lies into advertising gold?

Can we all agree, the Virginia diners who declined to leave a tip because they thought their server was not American, deserve all the ridicule they are getting?

Can we all agree the confrontation between Iranian and American battleships in the Persian Gulf sounds like the action of a rogue captain rather than a national policy? Or is that just wishful thinking?

Can we all agree that court decisions on bathroom choices leave us feeling that justice is not blind to politics and public opinion?

Can we all agree President Obama’s expansion of the marine national reserve will just add to his environmental legacy?

Can we all agree, speaking of the environment, California Governor Gerry Brown made sure his state maintained their place as the nation’s environmental capital?

Can we all agree, we are cheered by the victory of a homeless woman who successfully argued that the Social Security Administration owed her $100,000?

Can we all agree that it apparently takes a court to make some sense out of the French burkini ban?

Can we all agree, it won’t be too long before interest rates rise, marking the official end of The Great Recession?

Can we all agree this week’s gun protest at the University of Texas was  inspiring?

Can we all agree Herb Alpert’s Foundation deserves a round of applause for donating $10.1 million to Los Angeles City College to provide scholarships for every music major?

Can we all agree that putting a treaty, ending a 50-year war, to a nationwide vote seems a bit crazy?

Can we all agree, the Trump campaign’s efforts to undermine Mrs. Clinton, by alleging she has health issues, is too funny for serious comment?

Can we all agree, it’s almost as funny as Mr. Trump’s plea for support from African-American voters: “What do you have to lose?”

Can we all agree that we all feel a bit safer knowing there might be a planet that can support life, just 4.25 light years away? That’s roughly 25 trillion miles.

Can we all agree the Turkish/US invasion and capture of a Syrian town was more about pushing back the Kurds, than it was about ISIS?

Can we all agree we are not surprised that the Berkeley soda tax reduced consumption of sugary beverages in the city? Of course, it could be folks just did their shopping next door in Oakland.

And finally:

Can we all agree it’s a bit sad to know that soon  there will only be one remaining Howard Johnson‘s left in the United States?

And, for all of my female readers who are having trouble finding new clothes at the mall, I thought you might enjoy this from the Sarah Halzack.

Can we all agree, that with Ledecky, Phelps and Biles leading the way, the US team’s performance has been nothing short of unbelievable?

Can we all agree, every Baby Boomer has noticed that the average age of Olympic athletes has been creeping up for the last few years, but now the athletic senior citizens are actually winning medals?

Can we all agree that the Simone Manuel story could be the best of the first week?

Can we all agree that Hope Solo, losing goalie for the ousted US women’s soccer team, would be better off keeping her mouth shut?

Can we all agree the nationalistic back-and-forth over drug use by Olympic athletes really masks the fact that the IOC has bungled the issue for years?

Simone Manuel looks at her time in the 100 meter freestyle event in Rio. (NY Times photo)

Can we all agree that NBC has sabotaged their own ratings, particularly on the West coast, by forcing viewers to watch taped events when we all know the results?

Can we all agree the more interesting stories, may have been the real-life look at what goes on that TV cameras don’t show, and some that come across in living green?

Can we all agree, if Donald Trump had not refused to release his tax returns, the details of Hillary Clinton’s return would have been much bigger news?

Can we all agree the top news story of the week should have been the Federal report on the inner workings of the Baltimore Police Department?

Can we all agree that if the new leadership at Fox News was supposed to mark a new beginning, the Murdochs have come up empty?

Can we all agree that, in case there was ever any doubt, Facebook’s decision to force ads on to user’s pages, removes all doubt about who their real customers are? (Hint, it’s not the 1.71 billion active monthly users.)

Can we all agree that if reincarnation is real it might be nice to come back as the Greenland Shark which can apparently live for over 500 years?

Can we all agree that Mr. Trump’s  explanation that he was being sarcastic when he called Mrs. Clinton and President Obama founders of ISIS, rings pretty hollow, especially to his supporters who tried to defend him for two days before he changed his tune?

Can we all agree his ISIS accusation may be a calculated attempt to take attention away from his horrifying statements on what ‘second amendment people’ should do about Hillary Clinton – even before she is elected?

Can we all agree, no one is surprised that the NRA continues to back Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree that Mr. Trump has totally lost any chance to criticize the latest batch of emails from Mrs. Clinton?

Can we all agree it’s distressing to know that gun control supporters in the US seem to have the same opinion of our gun laws as ISIS?

Can we all agree it’s pretty frustrating to debate Mr. Trump on policy, since most voters don’t understand the subtleties of statements on topics like economic theory?

Can we all agree that even Mr. Trump seems to believe he’s going to lose the election? Of course he thinks it’s rigged although polls show him losing swing states by double digits.

Can we all agree the GOP move away from Mr. Trump has turned into a stampede?

Can we all agree that every Democrat in the country is worried about the hacked DNC emails that will probably be released between now and the November election?

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 7/30/16 edition

July 30, 2016

Can we all agree the difference between the Democratic and Republican conventions was pretty stark?

Can we all agree that, based on the TV ratings, America seems pretty engaged in the political process, even though it’s the middle of summer and half the country is on vacation somewhere?

Can we all agree that if Ronald Reagan had been watching, he would have a lot more in common with the Democratic themes than with anything he would have heard at the GOP convention?

Khizr Khan and his wife at the Democratic convention this week. (Getty Images)

Khizr Khan and his wife at the Democratic convention this week. (Getty Images)

Can we all agree the most powerful, but least watched part of the convention may have been the speech by Khizr Khan, whose 27-year-old Muslim-American son was killed in Afghanistan?

Can we all agree with Sarah Silverman that Bernie Sanders supporters, who continue to be angry with Hillary Clinton are just “being ridiculous,” although polls seem to show that 90% of them, outside the convention hall support the Democratic nominee.

Can we all agree that Mrs. Clinton is not the best public speaker but then, President Obama, The First Lady, Joe Biden and Bill Clinton are pretty tough acts to follow?

Can we all agree that Chelsea sounds like she will take after her father as a public speaker?

Can we all agree Donald Trump has succeeded in totally embarrassing his own wife?

Can we all agree that Mr. Trump’s press conferences are must see TV, just to find out what he will be retracting the next day?

Can we all agree we’re not surprised that Mr. Trump’s favorite movie is about a billionaire megalomanic?

Can we all agree the next three months will be among the most decisive in the nation’s history?

Can we all agree the Clinton campaign should be pretty nervous if stories that her email accounts were hacked by Vladimir Putin’s geek squad are true?

Can we all agree that if DNC chair Debbie Wasserman had been more transparent in the way she handled the Democratic primary season, she might have been able to keep her job, even after the hacked emails were made public and the DNC had to issue an apology?

Can we all agree there was plenty of other news, but it was tough to find amid all the convention coverage?

Can we all agree the second quarter GDP figure makes it seem like the economy is a lot worse than it really is?

Can we all agree it was just a matter of time before our own mosquitos were found to carry the Zika virus? But don’t expect our representatives to take a break from their 7-week recess to return to Washington to do anything about it?

Can we all agree the best thing most Americans could do to show support for Europe would be to vacation there this summer and fall?

Can we all agree that while it’s great to see 6 more public officials charged in connection with the Flint water crises, I doubt the residents of that city feel any comfort when they look at what has been done to their children?

Can we all agree the most bittersweet story of the week might be the opening of the new Sandy Hook elementary school?

Can we all agree it was encouraging to know the Federal Court saw right through the North Carolina and Wisconsin legislatures’ attempts to restrict voting in their states?

Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert

Can we all agree it was fun to see Stephen Colbert revive his conservative alter ego, but troubling to find out the effort may be short lived?

Can we all agree it was probably only matter of time before state fairs began sponsoring marijuana pie contests?

Can we all agree that only the notorious RBG could get away with presiding over a mock court appeal by Shylock after a Venice production of the Merchant of Venice?

Can we all agree that Bill O’Reilly doesn’t seem to understand why people were outraged when he noted that the slaves who helped build the White House, mentioned by Michelle Obama, ‘were well fed?’

Can we all agree the closure of media outlets and detainment of 47 newspaper executives pretty much ends any doubts about whether Turkey is still a democracy?

Can we all agree that, as my radio colleague Rick Love noted, we are all a bit concerned what will happen when John Hinkley’s 91-year-old mother is no longer around to supervise his home detention?

Can we all agree that, once again, the NFL has escaped criticism for their faulty show of concern about concussions in young football players?

Can we all agree that in any other week the government’s decision to admit more refugees from Central America would have touched off a huge controversy?

Can we all agree that of all the senseless ISIS murders, the death of an 85-year old priest during morning mass in France was among the most pointless?

Can we all agree that basketball icon Michael Jordan deserves praise for literally putting his money where his mouth is, when he spoke out against violence this week?

Can we all agree that no one is looking forward to the kind of horror stories about unfinished Olympic facilities that we expect to read when the Games open next week? Not to mention the trials of the Russian athletes over doping allegations.

And finally two nice reads for the week:

One on what really happens at The baseball Hall of Fame and another on life in New York City – enjoy.

Can we all agree the Republican hearings the day after the FBI announcement were a waste of time?

Can we all agree Donald Trump wasted a great opportunity to attack Hillary, by choosing instead to extoll the virtues of Saddam Hussein?

Can we all agree that Donald Trump has no knowledge of the US constitution?

Can we all agree Trump’s bid to unify the GOP in Washington behind him, was pretty much a failure?

Can we all agree Bernie Sanders didn’t have much luck either when he addressed his Democratic colleagues?

Can we all agree that Republican comparisons between the Clinton case and convicted general David Petraeus are absurd on their face?

Can we all agree that an economy that creates almost 300,000 jobs in a month is doing pretty well?

Can we all agree the British report criticizing the actions of former Prime Minister Tony Blair over the Iraq invasion, is really an indictment of George Bush?

Can we all agree that even if one state, California, passes tough gun control measures, it will make little difference  unless there are more stringent national standards?

Can we all agree there will never be another coach like Pat Summitt?

Can we all agree the brouhaha over the Marine Corps decision to change some job titles is the very definition of a tempest in a teapot?

and finally, we cannot ignore US politics:

Can we all agree Donald Trump has successfully scared the crap out of his own party by blasting free trade which has long been a cornerstone of GOP policy?

Can we all agree it’s starting to look like Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren might become a pretty impressive Democratic ticket?

Can we all agree the GOP convention in Cleveland may be the first time no politicians, other than the party nominee, gave a speech? No-one in the GOP apparently wants to attend.

Can we all agree we have to give Trump some points for resilience, no matter how many scandals or inconsistencies are uncovered he just makes believe they don’t exist and conjures up another lie to satisfy his supporters?
