CWAA: Can We All Agree – 7/23/16 edition

July 23, 2016

Can we all agree Hillary Clinton’s decision to pick Senator Timothy Kaine as her running mate was probably the safe choice, but he could make a difference with more moderate republicans?

Can we all agree, that if the GOP was trying to expand their base, their convention this week was a disaster?

Can we all agree that if most Americans bought into Mr. Trump’s doom and gloom picture of the United States we would all have moved to New Zealand?

Can we all agree the major connection between Mr. Trump’s theme of “I alone can...” and “I am your voice,” is the letter “I?”

Can we all agree the convention did little to convince anyone that the Republicans are just one big happy family?

Can we all agree that if your main themes are to either kill or jail your opponent you don’t really have a platform? Especially if the FBI rightfully starts an investigation – of you.

Can we all agree that Ted Cruz might have thought he was starting his 2020 campaign, but he was really ending it?

Can we all agree that as long as Mr. Trump maintains a thin skin and an outsized ego, Democrats will have no problem embarrassing him for the next three months?

Can we all agree that when one major speaker is booed off the stage and another is shown to have plagiarized parts of her speech, it’s tough to call the week a success?

Can we all agree we are not surprised at the GOP convention  TV ratings – it was quite the show?

Can we all agree that without the GOP convention and it’s jaw dropping moments, there was still plenty of unsettling news?

Can we all agree we’ve run out of words to describe the senseless violence striking Western Countries but we know Donald Trump will not make us feel safer?

Can we all agree that two years of searching for the missing Malaysian airliner is  more than enough?

Can we all agree that regardless of what you think of Roger Ailes, he had a major impact on TV news and US politics?

Can we all agree that we would not have Donald Trump as a candidate, were it not for Ailes and Fox TV?

Radio host Laura Ingraham salutes the GOP nominee.

Radio host Laura Ingraham salutes the GOP nominee.

Can we all agree the NBA’s decision to move their all-star game from Charlotte, is an important chapter in sport’s history? If no changes are made will Michael Jordan move his team?

Can we all agree the real losers on the decision to ban the Russian track and field team from the Rio Olympics, are the few athletes who did not take drugs because it would not have helped their performance?

Can we all agree, news that the Nice truck driver had apparently been planning his attack for a year, and may have had accomplices puts a new spin on his horrible act?

Can we all agree that when Turkish Prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, declared a three-month state of emergency after purging 40,000 people from their positions, he was simply solidifying his hold on power and making good on his claim that the attempted coup was a ‘gift from god.’

Can we all agree, the real victim will be his own country? Erdogan may have already sown the seeds of his own fate, and that of cleric Fethullah Gülen?

Can we all agree that soon, the only term that will describe Erdogan is, dictator?

Can we all agree that GOP attempts to limit voting are having a tough time standing up to the constitution?

Can we all agree that advocates of gun control may not need many more stories like this, out of Massachusetts, to make their point?

Can we all agree that Rep.Loretta Sanchez is showing some signs of desperation now that President Obama and others have endorsed Kamala Harris in the race for the California senate seat?

and finally:

Can we all agree if you’re a baseball fan and want to know why The Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy is headed to the Hall of Fame this weekend, you should read this?

Can we all agree that, effectively, the primary season ended this week when Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton posted lopsided wins?

Can we all agree the GOP has a tough demographic battle ahead, unless they change some of their basic party policies?

Can we all agree Trump cannot win a gender battle against Hillary?

Can we all agree that combining California’s liberal reputation with Donald Trump will make the month before the California primary a real circus?

Former Speaker John Boehner at Stanford this week, (Stanford Daily Photo)

Former Speaker John Boehner at Stanford this week, (Stanford Daily Photo)

Can we all agree that former Speaker John Boehner looked and sounded absolutely thrilled with an opportunity to blast Ted Cruz?

Can we all agree Ted Cruz’s stunt, naming Carley Fiorina as his VP choice, backfired badly because it makes no sense, just like his announced deal with John Kasich to split up the remaining primary states?

Can we all agree Trump’s foreign policy speech this week did not change many minds, supporters thought it was great and opponents say he still has no idea how the world really works?

Can we all agree the bombing of a Doctor’s Without Borders hospital in Afghanistan needs an independent investigation rather than a Pentagon report?

Can we all agree the occupation of Iraq’s parliament proves what most Americans now believe: maybe they needed to have a dictator in charge?

Can we all agree the voter I.D. requirements making their way through the courts do nothing but suppress voting when we should be encouraging everyone to get to the polls?

Can we all agree the GOP message has gotten lost in a torrent of bad headlines from the Koch’s supporting Hillary, to California fundraisers having trouble raising money?

Can we all agree that, if experts are correct,  we may be seeing a major change in teen attitudes toward sex?

Can we all agree when your attorney calls you a ‘little jerk,‘ you have some serious issues to overcome, even if you are a terrorist?

Can we all agree it’s pretty amazing that Dennis Hastert’s past, as a child molester,  did not catch up with him sooner?

Can we all agree that while most of the stock market seem panicked by Apple’s recent sales report, it might be wise to wait a bit before selling all your stock?

Can we all agree, speaking of Apple., the FBI iPhone hack may not be a real bargain, if it won’t work with the next generation iPhone, due out in the Fall?

Can we all agree that sending more combat troops to Syria reminds too many baby boomers of our slow descent into the Viet Nam War?

Can we all agree that the economy might not be in the best shape but it’s still pretty far from the disaster some politicians claim?

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady

And finally:

Can we all agree the court decision reinstating Tom Brady’s 4-game suspension had little to do with the original allegations, but was simply a verdict concerning labor law?

Can we all agree it’s painful to watch boatloads of migrants being sent back from the EU to Turkey?

Can we all agree that The NRA’s effort to redo Grimm’s Fairy tales by arming everyone with guns, is another sad commentary on our gun culture?

Can we all agree that Bill Clinton seems bit off his game as he campaigns for Hillary?

Can we all agree, speaking of a bit off, that Bernie Sanders sounds  off base trying to claim Hillary is unqualified because of votes she made as a Senator?

Can we all agree that, if there was any doubt about who President Obama backs, it looked pretty obvious after his comments this weekend on Fox News.

Can we all agree that the Democratic primary system looks like it was designed to benefit the candidate supported by the establishment? No matter how many victories Sanders notches, he doesn’t seem to make up much delegate ground.

Can we all agree that Bernie Sanders trip to Rome for a conference, in the middle of a campaign, seems bit strange?

Can we all agree that Ted Cruz is getting a good taste of New York values as he campaigns in the city?

Can we all agree that Bernie Sanders will probably have a lot of explaining to do at next week’s debate, after his Daily News interview revealed some holes in his plans for the country?

Can we all agree that Donald Blankenship got off easy with a year in prison and a fine after lax safety standards led to the death of 29 miners at one of his coal mines?

USA Today photo

Can we all agree that it’s good news the economy added 215,000 new jobs last month? Someone please tell the GOP and Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree that it’s somehow comforting to know that self-driving cars apparently will not be common until the condition of US roadways improves significantly? Maybe that will get them fixed.

Can we all agree, speaking of cars, putting $1,000 down for a $35,000 Tesla which may not be available for two years puts a bit too much faith in Elon Musk? That didn’t stop 133,000 fanatics though.

Can we all agree it was great to see the ‘Stones’ play Havana? Relations can now be considered normal.

Can we all agree that increases in the minimum wage in California and New York are welcome, but could be entirely eaten up by inflation, by the time they are fully implemented?

Can we all agree the women’s soccer stars who have kept their sport alive while the men continue to be international also-rans, deserve higher pay than the men?

Can we all agree that Alabama’s Republican Governor deserves to lose his job over his sex scandal?

Can we all agree that the FDA’s action this week, increasing the ability of women to end their pregnancies on their own, may do more to insure adequate access, than anything activists might do?

Can we all agree that Donald Trump has, once again, shown how improbably uninformed he is on topics ranging  from abortion to nuclear missiles? Quite an accomplishment.

Ron Wood and Keith Richards in Havana (AP Photo)

Can we all agree all three of the remaining  candidates, Kasich, Cruz and Trump sound increasingly desperate and the GOP is now officially the party of the walking dead?

Can we all agree that the actions of one of our smallest states will have a big impact on food labeling?

Can we all agree, that since US politicians continue to deny global warming, despite the most recent revelations about the Antarctic ice sheet, our only choice is to head to higher ground?

Can we all agree it was nice to have the GOP candidates get together this week and not debate? Did we ever believe Mr, Trump intended to support the GOP nominee if it was not him?

Can we all agree it might be a bit unsettling to see your pilot arrested and taken off your plane, just minutes before your were scheduled to take off?

Can we all agree that continuing revelations about the activity of terrorists in the EU might make Americans think twice about their summer travel plans to Europe?

Can we all agree that the media overreacted, just a tad, when news broke that an Egyptian plane had been hijacked?

Can we all agree that the actions of those state legislatures controlled by the Republicans, are starting to worry the party faithful – one state at a time?

Can we all agree it was good news that at least one governor (in Georgia) stood up to the crazies?

Can we all agree that when man-made earthquakes have become a natural phenomenon, we’ve all lost sight of the dangers of fracking?

Can we all agree that, while most of the attention was focused on the Republicans this week, Susan Sarandon may have hit on the biggest problem facing the Democratic front runner? I guess her performances in ‘Bull Durham’ and ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ qualify her a political pundit.

Can we all agree that when anyone on your campaign staff is charged with a crime, you really should tell them to find some other line of work? Let’s go to the video tape…

Can we all agree that it may not take many more 4-4 Supreme Court votes before Mitch McConnell’s coalition against Judge Merrick B. Garland starts to show cracks? Although it would be great to know what threat he’s using to keep them in line.

and finally:

Can we all agree that it’s tough for some of us to understand why people want to create a second or third virtual reality when the reality we all live, is a pretty good show?

Can we all agree that the Indiana abortion bill, the North Carolina discrimination bill and proposed religious discrimination bill in Georgia, are three reasons the GOP refuses to take a vote on Mr. Obama’s Supreme Court nomination.

The President dances up a storm in Argentina

The President dances up a storm in Argentina

Can we all agree that it’s great to have a President and First Lady who can hold their own on the dance floor? Could you picture George Bush (either one) even trying?

Can we all agree that if perception is reality, the California drought is over in the minds of most Californians?

Can we all agree that every week death seems to be chipping away  cultural foundation of the Baby Boomer generation?

Can we all agree that it’s hard to believe that 40 years after a landmark sexual harassment suit was brought against UC Berkeley, the school is still dealing with the issue?

Can we all agree that the real goal of the House panel seeking the names of fetal researchers is pretty obvious?

Can we all agree the state of the European Intelligence community makes it pretty obvious a unified Europe is a long way off? How long until another city is added to the list of successful ISIS targets?

Can we all agree that  the Brussels attack suggests the war against ISIS will not end quickly, but at least we seem to be making progress on the ground?

Can we all agree the the latest report on the lengths the NFL would reach to prove concussions and repeated hits to the head are not a problem, in simply mind boggling?

Can we all agree that the conviction of Radovan Karadzic is a milestone for the International Criminal Tribunal, but it will not end the violence in the Balkans?

Can we all agree it’s nice to have another report telling us who screwed up the water in Flint, but it would even better to have an overall plan to fix it?

Can we all agree that the real takeaway from this week’s primaries was the disaster that is the voting system promulgated by the GOP?

Can we all agree that Mr. Trump and Mr. Cruz have proven once again how their views on Muslims diverge from the mainstream in this country?

Can we all agree that at least 50% of the country agrees with Mr. Obama’s handling of his job despite what the Republicans think?CeSKD1nVAAATRaW

Can we all agree that one thing we all have in common is embarrassment over the state of the GOP?

CWAA Can We All Agree – 2/13/16 Politics Edition

February 13, 2016

So much news this week, I needed two posts – one on politics and another on the real news of the week. I had to get this out early so I wouldn’t have even more items from tonight’s GOP debate.

Can we all agree that he longer the GOP primary season goes on the stranger it gets?

Just a few examples this week:

Can we all agree that Ted Cruz’s campaign ad with a porn star takes this week’s prize?

Can we all agree that Mr. Cruz’s attempts at humor are, shall we say, sophomoric? Other words come to mind, but you can judge for yourself.

Can we all agree that Mr. Cruz should be more concerned that the leading newspaper in his home state endorsed the candidate from Ohio?

Can we all agree that it seems everyone is ganging up on Jeb Bush? Is he suddenly the front runner?

Can we all agree that fighting back using your brother would be a risky strategy in most of the country, but not down South?

Can we all agree with Donald Trump that the Pope is getting political? But is that bad, when he exposes Trumps xenophobic hysteria?

Can we all agree that a newspaper article explaining to parents how they can talk about Trump to their children assumes you think he is a problem?

Can we all agree that with Mr. Gilmore, Mr. Christie and Ms Fiorina out of the race it will be nice to have just a single GOP debate? Is Mr. Carson next?

Can we all agree that, to paraphrase Lyndon Johnson, “If you’ve lost David Brooks, you’ve lost the GOP?”

Can we all agree, speaking of the media, that the folks at Fox must be a bit upset that they have no control over the leading GOP candidate?

Can we all agree that while we saw the polls, we were a bit amazed that Bernie Sanders crushed Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire?

Can we all agree that the best headlines of the week belong to the Huffington Post which declined to put the name of the winning candidates in headlines saying ,” “Racist Sexist Homophobe” and “Democratic Socialist” won the New Hampshire primaries?

Can we all agree that the phrase “The campaign’s not dead,” or “We’re still alive.” doesn’t exactly sound like the battle cry of a winner?

Can we all agree that when the President proposes billion for research on self driving cars,  we’ll start seeing them around town pretty soon, just like the early days of the hybrid cars?

Can we all agree that even if you were not fan, you are mourning the passing of David Bowie?

David Bowie from Jethrotull.com images

David Bowie from Jethrotull.com images

Can we all agree that the Delaware North Company should be embarrassed for seeking $41 million for the names in Yosemite National Park? It will be a long time before anyone out west calls the Awahnee Hotel anything but the Awahnee.

Can we all agree that the Planned Parenthood suit against the anti-abortion group which secretly filmed conversations with executives, will make sure the abortion issue remains on the front burner right through the November elections?

Can we all agree the public image of the men taking over that wildlife refuge in Oregon took another hit today?

Can we all agree that declining to issue new coal leases for mining on public land will  be another blow to the coal industry already reeling from years of mismanagement and pollution?

Can we all agree that Thursday night’s GOP debate had some clear winners and losers?

Can we all agree that despite their best efforts the GOP establishment has not done much to dampen enthusiasm for either Mr. Trump or Mr. Cruz? Each man will probably notch a win in the the two early states.

Can we all agree that the so-called political experts don’t have a clue what will happen this year?

Can we all agree that even if Hillary loses in Iowa and New Hampshire, big wins across the South could propel her to the Democratic nomination?

Can we all agree that Sunday night’s Democratic debate could be critical for her?

Can we all agree that no matter how many stories pointing out how futile it is to buy a Powerball lottery ticket, one chance in 292,000,000 is better than no chance in 292,000,000?

Can we all agree that President Obama gave one superb speech in his final State of the Union?

Can we all agree that the President’s comments on gerrymandering of electoral districts is supported by every voter but opposed by every legislator with a ‘safe seat.’

Can we all agree that there is virtually no chance anything he wants will get passed in the next 10 months?

Gov, Nikki Haley of South Carolina

Gov, Nikki Haley of South Carolina

Can we all agree that Governor Nikki Haley does not deserve the vitriol she has been subjected to, for speaking the truth in her GOP response?

Can we all agree it will be great to have football back In Los Angeles? The question now is does it force teams in San Diego and Oakland, to stay put – as they should?

Can we all agree that the quick release of 10 US sailors who strayed into Iranian waters is a symbol of how our relations with that nation have improved? Another sign is the apparent release of 4 Iranian-American prisoners.

Can we all agree that Ricky Gervais has overstayed his welcome as host of the Golden Globe Awards?

Can we all agree that thanks to DVD’s and online movie streaming we at lease have a good shot at seeing all the 2015 Oscar nominated movies before the end of 2016?

Can we all agree that Sean Penn’s interview with a wanted drug kingpin stretched the bounds of acceptable journalism? Even Mr. Penn admits he did not achieve his goal.

and finally:

Can we all agree that we are all thrilled to know the exact spot where 18 alleged witches were hung in 1692?

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 1/9/16 edition

January 9, 2016

Can we all agree that the closer we get to actual voting the crazier the race for President gets?

For example:

Can we all agree that the ‘progressive’ media is just a bit too giddy that Ted Cruz has the same ‘birther’ problem that has haunted President Obama for 8 years?

Can we all agree that there has been way too much talk about Marco Rubio’s boots?

Can we all agree that despite what The Donald says, the amount of voter fraud in this country is minuscule?

Bill Clinton returns to the campaign trail

Bill Clinton returns to the campaign trail

Can we all agree that it is great to see former President Clinton back on the campaign trail explaining what’s really going on?

Can we all agree that Donald Trump’s attempts to attack Clinton over his past indiscretions will have no impact?

Can we all agree that the blizzard of GOP attack ads is hurting all the mainstream candidates?

But, enough politics:

Can we all agree that the self-styled militia that has taken over the small wildlife preserve in Oregon has virtually no support anywhere?

Can we all agree that the most vehement opponents are birders who point out the importance of the refuge to wild bird migration? If anyone has the patience to outlast the militia it’s birders.

Can we all agree that Mr. Obama has done a masterful job putting the NRA on the defensive over a relatively small change in gun registration regulations?

Can we all agree the last thing we needed in the Mideast was a increase in tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia?

Can we all agree that the President’s decision to roundup and deport hundreds of Central American women and children is a tragic betrayal of  one of the founding principles of this country? We can all agree that Donald Trump bears some of the responsibility.

Can we all agree that the addition of another 270,000 jobs signals continued strength in the economy despite what you might have heard from the GOP?

Can we all agree that the government’s new dietary guidelines may not be perfect, but are a step in the right direction?

Can we all agree that it’s probably just a matter of time before Mexican drug kingpin “El Chapo” is on the loose again unless he gets extradited to the United States?

Can we all agree that Alabama Judge Roy Moore just defies all logic is disputing the Supreme Court’s decision on gay marriage?

Can we all agree we are all better off now that Congress has wasted another few days repealing the Affordable Care Act and defunding Planned Parenthood? The bill was, of course, vetoed immediately.

Can we all agree that the Florida professor who claims the shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school and other violent acts were staged events, needs more punishment that just being fired?

Can we all agree that the leader of North Korea is creating a major headache, basically because he’s crazy?

Can we all agree, speaking of crazy, that the mayor of Cologne, Germany deserves a special  place in the Crazies Hall of Fame for his advice to women on how to avoid sexual assaults?

and finally:

Can we all agree that when a major metropolitan newspaper has to send its reporting staff out to deliver newspapers it has a real self-inflicted and inexcusable problem?

Can we all agree that, while we are a nation of law, governing by court decision is not the way the founding fathers designed the system to work?Flooding

Can we all agree that most climate scientists are looking at  extreme flooding in Texas and unusually high temperatures in India and saying,”we told you so?”

Can we all agree that Ted Cruz’s condemnation of federal money for Hurricane Sandy, and about-face on aid for Texas flood victims shows him to be the duplicitous politician that he is?

Can We All Agree?
