CWAA: Can We All Agree™ – 5/13/17 edition

May 13, 2017

Can we all agree the hack of numerous computer systems around the world will, once again make us all rethink our reliance on the internet? The US has only seen minor impact, but experts say it’s only a matter of time.

Can we all agree, when you change your story four times in three days, at least three of the excuses for firing the director of the FBI must be lies?

Can we all agree it is amazing that no one on the President’s staff realized firing the FBI chief might touch off a controversy?

Can we all agree the mental image of press secretary Sean Spicer hiding in the bushes to avoid reporters, may be one of the more enduring images of the week and it’s hard to believe SNL and Melissa McCarthy will let it pass unnoticed?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump may have more in common with Mr. Nixon than he wants if he is forced to produce the ‘tapes’ he alluded to in his tweets? In case you forgot, Nixon’s tapes forced his resignation.

Can we all agree Donald Trump’s ego would make his Twitter threats laughable if he were just a developer in New York, but as President, he doesn’t even realize the implications?

Can we all agree demanding loyalty over honesty should be an impeachable offense, since it clearly suggests Mr. Trump wanted to impede the FBI investigation into his campaign’s ties to Russia?

Can we all agree canceling the White House press briefings would hurt the President more than the press, given the daily leaks that spring from the White House?

Can we all agree anyone who believes Mr. Trump’s financial ties to Russia only come from his Miss Universe pageants is naive or delusional?

Can we all agree Jeff Sessions’ move to increase sentences for drug offenses is racist?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s panel on voter fraud is a fraud from the start?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump needs to decide if he wants to be a President or a TV critic? He will not win a war of words with anyone on television.

Can we all agree that with all the internal politics going on most of us may not have noticed the decisions to arm Kurdish fighters in Syria or send more American troops to Afghanistan?

Can we all agree using immigration officers to combat drug gangs. particularly when so many are US citizens, seems a bit extraordinary?

Can we all agree the Homeland Security chief’s plan to curtail the cash-for-visa program used by the Kushner family to fund luxury condos, will not happen?

Can we all agree the US public barely blinked an eye when the Russian Tass News Agency was allowed to cover our President in the White House but US media ws barred?

Can we all agree Sinclair’s purchase of Tribune Media has some ominous implications?

Can we all agree our negotiator in chief seems to have swapped a trade deal for Far East security and security was not the winner?

Can we all agree the strong dollar has increased travel to Europe by 26%, but tourists may have a rude awakening when they come home with their laptops packed into their carry-on bags?

Can we all agree, acting FBI Chief Andrew McCabe and former acting Attorney General Sally Yates were the only heroes in Washington this week? Too bad the same cannot be said for Assistant Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Can we all agree, as the Trump administration continues to destroy the environment, at least three GOP Senators deserve credit  for standing up to him?

Can we all agree Education Secretary Betsy Devoss really has no clue why she is facing so much opposition?

Can we all agree the most under-covered story of the week  might be the resignation of the head of the US Census Bureau?

Can we all agree, when a cabinet secretary praises police for jailing a reporter doing his job we have really entered a new era of press relations?

Can we all agree Senate leader Mitch McConnell has no regard for the Constitution or his role as a check on executive branch abuses?

Can we all agree naming a committee of 13  men to write a health care bill that could drastically change women’s health care is absurd?

Can we all agree Speaker Paul Ryan’s defense of his health care bill is no less despicable than McConnell’s actions? Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel had a great response to the GOP as did voters at Republican town meetings.

Can we all agree this Republican Congressman’s statements on health care  could become the Democratic anthem for the 2018 election cycle?

Can we all agree, the Democratic race for the White House in 2020 has heated up and California’s Kamala Harris seems to have her running shoes on?

Can we all agree, were it not for the Comey firing we’d all be talking about subpoenas for Michael Flynn and the White House’s 18 day delay in firing him?

Can we all agree elections in France, Germany and South Korea seem to suggest that the rest of the world has learned from our mistake?

And finally:

Can we all agree anyone who has purchased organic produce from outside the US has always wondered about the validity of the label.

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 2/25/edition

February 25, 2017

Can we all agree Donald Trump’s battle with the media is a war we cannot let him win?

Can we all agree, it’s encouraging to see polls suggesting more people trust the media that trust Mr. Trump and that a great majority are simply embarrassed by him?

Can we all agree, if any other president, tried to cover up his actions by recruiting federal agencies and public officials, we’d be discussing how much longer he could stay in office?

Can we all agree the fight over which companies, do, or do not, support Mr. Trump has given new meaning to the phrase “retail politics”?

Mexican newspapers commenting on Trump's attempts to keep some journalists out of the White House press briefing

Can we all agree our President doesn’t seem to realize that angering the FBI, could be a bit counter-productive?

Can we all agree the financial connection between Brietbart News and Mr. Trump is hardly surprising?

Can we all agree Jeff Sessions, our new attorney general, has wasted little time imposing  his political agenda on the country?

Can we all agree, the inconsistency in his belief in states rights is pretty obvious: states should decide school LGBT policies but not marijuana policy.

Can we all agree, even Mr. Obama must have known his decision on the Dakota Access pipeline was really only a temporary delay?

Can we all agree our new EPA administrator should be known as the ‘cut and paste’ chief after his emails revealed his close relationship with the oil and gas industry?

Can we all agree politicians who are refusing to meet face to face with constituents deserve the scorn they are receiving from Gabby Giffords?

Can we all agree the reps who faced their voters should not win praise for simply doing their jobs?

Can we all agree, if this is this is best the GOP can do to answer voter’s questions, the Democrats  may have a shot to take back both branches of Congress in 2018?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s appearance before congress next week will probably rival the Super Bowl in viewership at least until the first Democrat calls him a liar, in the middle of his speech?

Can we all agree his speech to Congress should be a great warmup for the reception he’s sure to get in England?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump cannot escape at least some of the responsibility for the racist and deadly xenophobic attacks being reported around the country?

Can we all agree, having a son  and daughter who practice the Jewish faith, does not mean Mr. Trump cannot be anti-semitic?

Can we all agree it’s nice to know we’ve seen the last of Milo Yiannopoulos?

Can we all agree most Americans cannot even imagine the kind of fear migrants living here must feel on a daily basis because of the announced changes in immigration policy?

Can we all agree even the most ardent Trump supporter did not envision the draconian immigration rules being enforced?

Can we all agree the 7 newly discovered  dwarf planets, which could sustain life, have to be named Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Happy, Sleepy, Sneezy and Grumpy?

Can we all agree our new national security chief may be a breath of fresh air, but it’s doubtful his voice will be heard above the shouts of other Trump advisors?

Can we all agree, it may not be long before our president tries out the tactics of the Philippine President and starts arresting his opponents? Or maybe he’ll take a page from the North Korean playbook?

Can we all agree, it would be easy to see the Pope’s latest comments on what constitutes a good Catholic as another  blast to the Trump administration?

Can we all agree, we sort of miss Kellyanne Conway’s clown act, now that she’s been sidelined by the White House?

and finally:

If you’re thinking about seeing a therapist to deal with our new political environment, think of what the therapists are going through.

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 11/26/16 edition

November 26, 2016

I trust you all had a fulfilling Thanksgiving, and the leftovers are gone by now.

Can we all agree, regardless of your party affiliation, Fidel Castro was a pivotal political figure of the 20th Century?

Fidel Castro in 1984 (NYT photo)

Fidel Castro in 1984 (NYT photo)

Can we all agree, the President-elect’s response – gleeful celebration – is colored by his past attempts to open a casino in Cuba, rather than any understanding of the historical significance of the event?

Can we all agree the reaction to the start of the election recount process would have been much different if Hillary Clinton had won ?

Can we all agree it’s probably not realistic to think the results will be altered? But that hasn’t prevented Jill Stein from raising millions to move ahead in three states.

Can we all agree, the recount will do little to dampen the criticism of the Electoral College as Hillary Clinton’s lead in the overall vote continues to mount?

Can we all agree the proliferation of fake news for profit, may be the  life preserver traditional edited news content needed to prevent its demise?

Can we all agree the outlandish sums the government will be paying for security of the Trump family, is just one way the new President will profit from his own election?

Can we all agree Melania’s decision to remain in New York, at least until the end of the school year, so her son , who some believe has shown signs of autism, can finish the school year, may become  permanent?

Can we all agree the meetings this week between broadcast journalists and later the NY Times, illustrate why Mr. Trump was able to win election by controlling the message through TV coverage? We may be seeing the first Youtube presidency.

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s supporters don’t seem to care that he is continuing to turn away from his own campaign rhetoric? In fact, they expected it.

Can we all agree, Donald Trump’s business interests, make the Clinton Foundation issues look insignificant? His interests are so widespread they will color almost every decision he makes.

Can we all agree, nothing was more chilling this week than the continuing celebrations in the racist alt-right community?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s business interests, and his continued focus on them, could be the undoing of his presidency?

Can we all agree, Mr. Trump’s financial interest in the Dakota Access pipeline  is just one example?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s economic appointments, prove once again that he has duped the great majority of the blue-collar supports who put him in office?

Can we all agree the choice of Betsy Devos as education secretary will continue to make it more difficult for traditional public school districts to educate our children?

Can we all agree the new UN ambassador may have a tough job trying to explain Mr. Trump’s actions to the rest of the world?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s decision to forgo security briefings as he focuses on his cabinet choices, illustrates the attitude of most American’s toward the rest of the world?

Can we all agree the United States should be paying more attention to the showdown between the EU and Turkey?

Can we all agree the election of Donald Trump and the Brexit vote may have actually strengthened the European Union?

Can we all agree, the news that the FBI now has access to everything posted on Twitter, is very disconcerting?

Can we all agree it was reassuring to see a new peace agreement signed in Colombia, even after voters rejected the first deal?

Can we all agree the widespread fires in Israel will be used by all parties to the Mideast unrest, to further their own causes?

Can we all agree, if you were wondering why the battle over court appointments has become so significant, you need look no further than this week’s decisions on new overtime rules or Wisconsin gerrymandering, for an answer?

Can we all agree most American Catholics seem to be OK with Pope Francis’ latest pronouncement on abortion?

Can we all agree, speaking of going unnoticed, no-one seems to  care about the ever-changing Olympic medal count, caused by the latest round of doping results?

Can we all agree it will be interesting to see how Mr. Trump counters the inevitable criticism he gets from Mr. Obama once their roles have changed?

Can we all agree the strangest story of the week may be the Exxon-Mobil decision to sue the offspring of its founding father?

President Obama and his final pardon.

President Obama and his final pardon.

Can we all agree, Mr. Obama is in a race against the clock to make sure many non-violent drug offenders  get their lives back?

Can we all agree he’s facing the same time constraints as he works to honor the many notable Americans who have supported his presidency?

And finally:

You have to wonder if the turkey pardoned by Mr. Obama really wanted to live in a Trumpian world marked by one drama after another?

and

The good news story of the week of the repo man who saved an elderly couple from losing their car.

RIP, everyone’s TV mom, Florence Henderson.

October 29, 2016

Can we all agree the Republican glee 0ver the re-opening on the inquiry into Hillary Clinton’s email server may be short lived?

Can we all agree FBI director James Comey has gone from independent investigator to political hack?

Can we all agree the candidate’s reactions were predictable, but Rush Limbaugh was pretty creative?

FBI Director James Comey (Washington Post Photo)

FBI Director James Comey (Washington Post Photo)

Can we all agree Mrs. Clinton would have preferred stories from Wikileaks on her husband’s foundation over the FBI email probe?

Can we all agree that, until the email announcement, the week was filled with lists from Mr. Trump: potential conspirators, potential defendants, potential doners, and insults.

Can we all agree that we really don’t know if the FBI has found anything?

Can we all agree it’s probably not good for Mrs. Clinton that stories about potential cabinet choices have started to filter into the news?

Can we all agree Mrs. Clinton’s fundraising advantage will mean little if Mr. Trump continues to get free media via the news?

Can we all agree, it’s a bit ironic that the GOP, which is based on the principle of smaller government, is now controlled by a group of people who have been left behind economically, and want the government to bail them out?

Can we all agree it was hard to believe we were watching Fox News when Megan Kelly interviewed Newt Gingrich this week?

Can we all agree the best news of the week is the continued expansion of the nation’s GDP?

Can we all agree we are incredulous at the not-guilty verdict handed down in the Oregon wildlife refuge case?

Can we all agree the verdicts will probably be much different when the cases against Indian protestors in South Dakota  are heard? Justice is apparently not blind any more.

Can we all agree the GOP has already undermined what little credibility they had left by promising continued inquiries if Mrs. Clinton wins the election?

Can we all agree, the idea that The Senate would simply refuse to consider any nominee for the Supreme Court for the next four years is just absurd –  except that it seems perfectly rational to Ted Cruz?

Can we all agree that it is sad we have to rely on the Supreme Court to decide social issues?

Can we all agree,  Justice Clarence Thomas is probably not a big fan of Mr. Trump now that the candidate’s actions have encouraged victims of sexual assault to come forward??

Can we all agree that anything the government can do to cut down on those fake IRS robo-calls is welcomed?

Can we all agree the FDA’s decision to test a lung cancer drug developed in Cuba is surprising, but the war on cancer can’t afford to snub any potential cures just because they were not developed in the US?

Can we all agree no-one is surprised that ISIS fighters are using civilians as human shields as they defend the City of Mosul?

Can we all agree the FCC’s decision to give us more control over personal data is the right move, although we’ll probably give it away when we routinely agree to the next service contract we approve with our internet providers?

Can we all agree it’s too bad it took election politics to get the  Pentagon to suspend their demands that National Guard veterans repay bonuses? But what will happen to those who already struggled to repay the debt they didn’t know they had?

Can we all agree that every time we visit a pharmacy to pick up a prescription we should remember how much lobbying went in to keeping the price high?

Can we all agree removing the Calais camp, known as ‘The Jungle’ will not solve the EU’s migrant crises?

Can we all agree it’s about time someone looked at the effect of a soccer ball on player’s heads?

Can we all agree we should be encouraging people to vote, not thinking up ways to prevent it?

Can we all agree there might be a connection between the spate of early retirements from the NFL and the drop in TV ratings?

Can we all agree that even though premiums for insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act are increasing most policy holders still think it’s a good deal?

And finally:

Make sure you watch Tom Hanks on last week’s Saturday Night Live Black Jeopardy skit.

It’s about time Marlowe got some credit for helping out Shakespeare.

And next time you’re at the beach, toss a message in a bottle into the water and wait 20 years to see what happens.

Can we all agree the only folks who expected a pivot on Mr. Trump’s immigration stand were wishful thinking Republicans?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s visit to an African-American church in Detroit will have to be an Academy Award performance if it’s going to make any difference in the campaign?

Can we all agree the release of FBI files on Hillary Clinton the Friday before Labor Day weekend, guarantees that only the politicians will be paying attention?

Can we all agree we’re having second thoughts about this whole privatization of space travel, now that another rocket has exploded on a Cape Canaveral launch pad?

Can we all agree the situation in Syria is so bad the sides can’t even agree on whose bomb killed an ISIS leader?

Can we all agree that the European Union’s aggressive stand against the tax policies of its own countries, is just discouraging business?

Can we all agree, it does seem a bit odd that Wikileaks never seems to say anything bad about Russia or its leader Vladimir Putin?

Can we all agree we should be just as outraged that homes were allowed to be built on contaminated land in Indiana, as we were about the water in Flint. MI?

Can we all agree that American’s reaction to even minor incidents just shows we have have a collective case of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

Can we all agree Anthony Weiner has some serious issues to deal with if he ever wants to return to a public life? Chris Brown might want to retire too.

Can we all agree that San Francisco Forty-Niners quarterback Colin Kapernick has every right to stage a protest, but the whole scene seemed a bit odd, since he had never even mentioned anything about human rights since he got to the NFL?

Can we all agree that when Americans read about the death of the Uzbekistan president, they had no idea how to find the country on a map?
