Can We All Agree – 6/27/15 Edition

June 27, 2015

Can we all agree that President Obama may have just had the single best week any modern president ever had?

Can we all agree that The Supreme Court Ruling on the Affordable Care Act was perfect for everyone?

Can we all agree that it solidified a Democratic legacy and gave the GOP something to oppose with no political consequences?

Can we all agree that The Court’s approval of gay marriage had the same impact?

Can we all agree that Justice Antonin Scalia has officially gone off the rails in his dissents?

Can we all agree that the speed with which the GOP was able to reverse the vote on fast-track trade authority, really makes you wonder about congressional motives for the enormous waste of time on so many other matters?

Can we all agree that Rep. Nancy Pelosi was badly out-manuevered?

Can we all agree that a symbol, like the Confederate flag, can indeed incite violence?

Can we all agree that removing the Confederate flag or any references to it, may be the single biggest impact of the 9 deaths in South Carolina?

Can we all agree that the President’s speech on Friday in Charleston was among his most moving since he took office?

Can we all agree that he will not replace Taylor Swift atop The Billboard 100?

Can we all agree that musical artists of every stripe owe Ms Swift a huge debt for her stand against Apple’s initial royalty payment system?

Can we all agree it would be nice if she changed her policy for photographers who provide her with publicity?

Can we all agree that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s apology for the Boston Marathon  bombing was too little, and too late, even for those of us opposed to the death penalty?

Can we all agree that while the GOP Presidential race got another entrant, no-one even noticed the additional clown in the car?

Can we all agree that we are all losing interest in terrorist attacks around the world?

Can we all agree that when we lose interest, it’s probably just a matter of time before an attack hits closer to home?

Can we all agree that when the Greek Prime Minister calls for a referendum on a debt bailout, he’s not showing much leadership?

Can we all agree that the US Women’s Soccer Team’s victory over China to reach the World Cup semi-finals was pretty lopsided, even though the final score was only 1-0 ?

Can We All Agree…? 1/17/15

January 17, 2015

Can we all agree that at least having the Supreme Court make a final decision on gay marriage is preferable to living with questions? Although I can’t see how they could overturn what has become the law in 24 states.

Can we all agree that all the talk about Oscar ‘snubs’ and ‘campaigns’ is getting a bit old? But we’ll all still tune in to see Neil Patrick Harris February 22.

Can we all agree that the “all Caucasian” list of nominees is an embarrassment for Hollywood?

Can we all agree that the Golden Globes would have been better if Amy and Tina got more TV time?

Can we all agree that if 2014 was the hottest year on record, we have a problem? In same vein, the mass extinction of ocean animals will not help.

Can we all agree that trips to Cuba will be the trendy vacation in 2015?

Can we all agree that the GOP’s effort to avoid looking like ‘crazies’ could be hurt by one candidate who blasted the president for letting his kids listen to Beyonce and a House member who compared him to Hitler?

Can we all agree that The President erred in not sending someone more senior, such as Joe Biden, to Paris last weekend?

Can we all agree that the Pope’s admonishment that religion should not be criticized may not reflect the general view here in the US.

Can we all agree that the ISIS threat will get worse before it gets better?

Can we all agree that Hillary is running, and has been for about 1 year…at least?

Can we all agree that Bill Moyers, who retired (again) this week, is among the best journalists in the country?

Can we all agree that with unemployment dropping and consumer confidence rising the GOP may have a tough time running on economic issues?

Can we all agree that The President’s veto stamp may wear out by mid year?

Can we all agree that the first College Football Playoff was a great success – no matter what team you supported?

Can we all agree that there are already too many (announced and potential) GOP presidential candidates? Seventeen by my count.

Can we all agree that, while the 2016 election should be a barn-burner, having a US Senate race on the ticket in California, really spices things up…especially with the state’s new election system?

Can we all agree that swimming 16 hours after your boat capsizes is pretty remarkable?

Can we all agree that the House action on immigration is ill-conceived and punishes many people, just to make a political point?

Can we all agree that Al Qaeda in Yemen claiming responsibility for the Paris attacks is not exactly a big surprise?

Can we all agree that when you are a GOP Presidential candidate, getting slammed by the Wall Street Journal editorial board – as Mitt Romney 3.0 did – is not a good sign.

Can we all agree that climbing Dawn Wall on El Capitan without equipment is a world class achievement? Can we make it an Olympic event?

Can we all agree that the hires at the ‘Niners and Raiders says volumes about how the teams are viewed outside of the Bay Area?

Can we all agree that selling 3 million copies of any newspaper or magazine in the age of the internet is a statement, period? Even if many people just wanted a souvenir.

Can We All Agree?

October 23, 2014

The first in a series, I hope, of  semi-regular observations on the week’s news:

Can we all agree that the Senate is just too close to call. Even Politico, which is decidedly right leaning, says so.
Can we admit that the country was just a tad nuts about Ebola, thank you Fox News and one poorly run hospital in Texas.
Can we all agree that there will never be another newspaper editor that anyone will remember after Ben Bradlee.
Can we agree that when three suburban Denver teens, steal money from their parents to join ISIS, we have a problem.
Can we agree that when terrorism strikes a nation, long known as the friendliest country on Earth, we’ve reached a new low.
Can we agree that, like inter-racial marriage, gay marriage is here to stay. I don’t think we need a countdown to 50.
Can we agree that when the airbags of almost 5 million cars may be faulty, someone screwed up, big time.
Can we agree that Gov. Gerry Brown has about a 110% shot of being elected.  But those ballot questions are anyone’s guess.
Plus YCMTU (you can’t make this up)

SF’s Golden Gate Bridge Authority  wants to charge you to walk to Marin and back,- great way to attract tourists,
Pistorius facing 10 months in jail – he only killed one person
