Can We All Agree – 12/24/16 edition

December 24, 2016

This marks my 101st CWAA post. Probably should have noticed that last week was number 100 and had some sort of special ceremony, but better late than never. This will be my last of 2016 unless Mr. Trump unleashes another Tweet storm next week  – making policy via Twitter. But I’ll be back at it in January of 2017. I don’t want to be like Jon Stewart who deserted us all when we needed him most.

Thank you to all my faithful readers, I appreciate your comments and suggestions. Happy Holidays.

Can we all agree it was only a matter of time before the gulf between President Obama and Donald Trump became very public? I am rather surprised it surfaced over Israel, though.

Can we all agree the truck attack in Germany which left 12 dead is bad news for Angela Merkel’s immigration policies? Even though, they had very little to do with it.

Can we all agree it appears Vladimir Putin, is not done with his campaign to destabilize the West?

Can we all agree it seems rather odd that Mr. Putin has not made more of the murder of his ambassador in Turkey? Could it be he was more intent on declaring victory in Syria?

Can we all agree Donald Trump has managed to convince many voters, we are on the edge of a recession, when the evidence suggests the US economy is very healthy?

Can we all agree the relationship between the press and the new administration will be the most strained in recent memory, now that we have to read Twitter, then listen to his counselors explain what the new President really meant?

Can we all agree announcing a nuclear missile arms war via a Twitter is not what anyone would call presidential?

Can we all agree they US policy in Syria has failed and the people of Al;expo are just the first to suffer for it?

Can we all agree the folks in the midwest and Northeast probably take little solace in knowing the North Pole temperatures are 30 degrees above normal?

Can we all agree that Oprah’s interview with the First Lady was interesting, but it really just seemed like a way for her to give Michelle Obama a way to fight back against all the racist hate that exists in this country.

Can we all agree Mr. Obama seems intent on making it as difficult as possible for the new president elect to carry out some of his campaign promises? Not to mention some of his environmental goals.

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s requests for information have made it pretty clear which policies he wants to end? First it was the environment and now it’s gender equality.

Can we all agree the new administration has no idea how embarrassing the hearings on their cabinet nominees will be, since they have done very little vetting of candidates beyond their interviews with Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree anyone who expected  North Carolina to change their infamous “bathroom bill’  was either dreaming or simply very naive?

Can we all agree we will be hearing more about how access to Mr. Trump was available to anyone who wanted to pay for it?

Can we all agree, it won’t change things, but Mrs. Clinton can take some solace from her 3-million vote ‘victory’? And what happened to all that voter fraud, we could never find?

Can we all agree the January inauguration will not be the star-studded party we are all used to? Unless your idea of top notch entertainment is the Rockettes.

Can we all agree the war of words between Mr. Trump and President Clinton does not put either of them in a very good light?

Can we all agree the increase in sign-ups for health care under the Affordable Care Act will could create quite a backlash if the GOP and Mr. Trump are dumb enough to follow through on their campaign pledges?

Can we all agree the United States doesn’t seem to have an exclusive on strange court decisions..just ask IMF chief Christine Lagarde who was apparently found guilty and not guilty at the same time?

Can we all agree the new word of the year  – surreal – was a great choice by the folks at Merriam Webster?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s little chat this week with Mexican millionaire Carlos Slim is just another example of the conflicts of interest inherent in the new administration?

Can we all agree Ben Utecht’s book should be required reading for every player in the NFL?

Can we all agree the reason the GOP has been able to get away with denying science, is studies like this?

and finally:

This week’s great read is from the New York Times – a  profile of basketball coach Steve Kerr. He’s not just your average spoiled jock.

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 10/29/16 edition

October 29, 2016

Can we all agree the Republican glee 0ver the re-opening on the inquiry into Hillary Clinton’s email server may be short lived?

Can we all agree FBI director James Comey has gone from independent investigator to political hack?

Can we all agree the candidate’s reactions were predictable, but Rush Limbaugh was pretty creative?

FBI Director James Comey (Washington Post Photo)

Can we all agree Mrs. Clinton would have preferred stories from Wikileaks on her husband’s foundation over the FBI email probe?

Can we all agree that, until the email announcement, the week was filled with lists from Mr. Trump: potential conspirators, potential defendants, potential doners, and insults.

Can we all agree that we really don’t know if the FBI has found anything?

Can we all agree it’s probably not good for Mrs. Clinton that stories about potential cabinet choices have started to filter into the news?

Can we all agree Mrs. Clinton’s fundraising advantage will mean little if Mr. Trump continues to get free media via the news?

Can we all agree, it’s a bit ironic that the GOP, which is based on the principle of smaller government, is now controlled by a group of people who have been left behind economically, and want the government to bail them out?

Can we all agree it was hard to believe we were watching Fox News when Megan Kelly interviewed Newt Gingrich this week?

Can we all agree the best news of the week is the continued expansion of the nation’s GDP?

Can we all agree we are incredulous at the not-guilty verdict handed down in the Oregon wildlife refuge case?

Can we all agree the verdicts will probably be much different when the cases against Indian protestors in South Dakota  are heard? Justice is apparently not blind any more.

Can we all agree the GOP has already undermined what little credibility they had left by promising continued inquiries if Mrs. Clinton wins the election?

Can we all agree, the idea that The Senate would simply refuse to consider any nominee for the Supreme Court for the next four years is just absurd –  except that it seems perfectly rational to Ted Cruz?

Can we all agree that it is sad we have to rely on the Supreme Court to decide social issues?

Can we all agree,  Justice Clarence Thomas is probably not a big fan of Mr. Trump now that the candidate’s actions have encouraged victims of sexual assault to come forward??

Can we all agree that anything the government can do to cut down on those fake IRS robo-calls is welcomed?

Can we all agree the FDA’s decision to test a lung cancer drug developed in Cuba is surprising, but the war on cancer can’t afford to snub any potential cures just because they were not developed in the US?

Can we all agree no-one is surprised that ISIS fighters are using civilians as human shields as they defend the City of Mosul?

Can we all agree the FCC’s decision to give us more control over personal data is the right move, although we’ll probably give it away when we routinely agree to the next service contract we approve with our internet providers?

Can we all agree it’s too bad it took election politics to get the  Pentagon to suspend their demands that National Guard veterans repay bonuses? But what will happen to those who already struggled to repay the debt they didn’t know they had?

Can we all agree that every time we visit a pharmacy to pick up a prescription we should remember how much lobbying went in to keeping the price high?

Can we all agree removing the Calais camp, known as ‘The Jungle’ will not solve the EU’s migrant crises?

Can we all agree it’s about time someone looked at the effect of a soccer ball on player’s heads?

Can we all agree we should be encouraging people to vote, not thinking up ways to prevent it?

Can we all agree there might be a connection between the spate of early retirements from the NFL and the drop in TV ratings?

Can we all agree that even though premiums for insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act are increasing most policy holders still think it’s a good deal?

And finally:

Make sure you watch Tom Hanks on last week’s Saturday Night Live Black Jeopardy skit.

It’s about time Marlowe got some credit for helping out Shakespeare.

And next time you’re at the beach, toss a message in a bottle into the water and wait 20 years to see what happens.

Can We All Agree – 8/29/15 Edition

August 29, 2015

Sorry I missed a week. Events just conspired against me last weekend. I have no excuse, unlike Hillary.

But:

Can we all agree that Hillary’s inability to get out in front of the whole email server thing, is really destroying her candidacy? At this point it doesn’t make any difference who’s right or who’s wrong. I guess she’s hoping no-one pays attention until after Labor Day.

Can we all agree that after a month of talk, It’s time for Joe Biden to make a decision? It’s clear now it has nothing to do with his family, but it’s just politics.

Can we all agree that the actions of all four people who prevented a mass murder on a French train, made us all proud?

Can we all agree that the longer the Europeans fail to deal with the influx of migrants from North Africa and the Middle East, the worse things will get?

Can we all agree that the EU issues are very similar to immigration problems we have failed to deal with in the United States? The difference is that Mexican migrants die alone in the desert, so Americans can ignore the issue.

Can we all agree that, as some economists have pointed out, “Wall Street is not the Economy” should be this week’s theme?

Can we all agree that since we really have no idea what’s going on in China’s economy, it’s pointless to get too excited?

Can we all agree that by almost any measure the US economy is doing fine?

Can we all agree that based on their comments about the “China crises’ the GOP candidates know nothing about economics?

Can we all agree that Donald Trump has sucked all the air from the rest of the GOP field? Those who think the other candidates are playing it smart, waiting for him to self-destruct, may have a long wait.

Can we all agree that Trump’s comments may have already lost the Republicans the votes of the two fastest growing immigrant groups in the US – Latinos and Asians.

Can we all agree that The Pope’s visit to the US next month could be the most significant visit by a prelate in US history?

Can we all agree that it makes sense that employers who hide behind contractors who pay substandard wages, should be held accountable?

Can we all agree that it might be tough to find a new CEO for the Ashley Madison website?

Can we all agree that some of those psychological studies with non-repeatable results, sounded a bit specious from the beginning?

Can we all agree that the split in the Jewish community over the Iran treaty is deeper than just the deal itself?

Can we all agree that it would be great if the father of slain TV journalist Alison Parker, could get politicians to act on gun legislation, but if the death of 20 children and 6 teachers in Newtown, CT couldn’t do it, we have our doubts?

Can we all agree that no-one is surprised that the footage of Planned Parenthood executives was doctored? But that won’t stop politicians from using it.

Can we all agree that the Napa Wine Train handled a group of allegedly boisterous riders, very badly?

Can we all agree that former President Bush  showed some Moxie by returning to New Orleans to mark the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina?
