CWAA: Can We All Agree ™- 3/25/17

March 25, 2017

Can we all agree Friday night’s Wisconsin-Florida basketball game may be this year’s March Madness signature moment?

Can we all agree Donald Trump can try to blame the Democrats, but everyone knows his own party is responsible for the death of his health care bill?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump doesn’t need a press secretary if he’s going to call reporters every time he wants to blame somebody?

Can we all agree you can always count on social media for the best commentary, although traditional media had some pithy comments?

Can we all agree most Americans thought the FBI Director’s testimony about a criminal investigation of the Trump campaign would be the major story of the week? How quickly things change with this administration.

Can we all agree the failure of the health care bill exposed the many rifts within the Republican Congress?

Can we all agree the State of California is looking forward to a showdown with the EPA over emission regulations?

Can we all agree Chicago Cubs President Theo Epstein has done an impressive job for two teams, but calling him the world’s best leader, is really an insult to many leaders who make more consequential decisions?

Can we all agree the US military is heading for a major PR disaster as more and more civilians are killed or injured by their bombs in Iraq?

Can we all agree the conviction of former Penn State President Graham Spanier will be a welcome end to the 5 year sex scandal at the university?

Can we all agree the actions of Rep. Devin Nunes have handed Democrats an iron-clad reason to seek a special prosecutor or select committee to investigate the Trump campaign’s links to the Russians?

Can we all agree the longer the investigation is delayed the longer the drip, drip, drip of Russian connections will haunt the White House?

Can we all agree Secretary of State Rex Tillerson did not help his boss by skipping the G-20 summit to visit Russia?

Can we all agree the number of Vladimir Putin’s critics who have died mysteriously runs counter to the Kremlin’s claims that they bear no responsibility?

Can we all agree the approval of the Keystone Pipeline project was a foregone conclusion once the Dakota Access Pipeline was approved?

Can we all agree it’s remarkable that the GOP shows no embarrassment at the sight of over 30 white male lawmakers arguing over whether to cut women’s breast cancer screening from the now-dead health care bill?

Can we all agree Defense Secretary James Mattis probably never thought he would spend most of his time cleaning up the damage Mr. Trump creates because he doesn’t understand how NATO works?

Can we all agree the release of Hosni Mubarek from an Egyptian prison hospital marks the official end of the Arab Spring in Egypt?

Can we all agree, for most Americans, the best news of the week might be the FCC’s decision to fight back against robocalls?

Can we all agree the State Department’s new extreme vetting process is just another way to enforce the ban on immigration and probably explains why they are in no hurry to appeal legal rulings stopping the President’s order?

Can we all agree it’s no surprise the Trump administration found that Mr. Trump was in full compliance with his government lease for the Trump Hotel in Washington?

Can we all agree everyone should have a Trump Chicken – even if the  artist never intended his artwork to mock Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree, even in London, the personal history of the lone attacker, has the same ring as those from the US, France and Belgium?

Can we all agree the factors that appear to be leading to premature deaths of white Americans have implications for every aspect of our way of life?

Can we all agree, allowing Interior Department employees to bring dogs to work, might help with the toxic atmosphere, but a change in policy would probably do more?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s interview with Time Magazine is extraordinary for it’s lies and lack of knowledge on so many subjects?

Can we all agree if you’ve lost the support of the Wall Street Journal’s editorial page, you can’t really be a conservative?

Can we all agree Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch will probably be confirmed, but the Democrats need to mount a filibuster just to object to the way Mr. Obama’s nominee was treated?

Can we all agree we know nothing more about Mr. Gorsuch  now, than we did when his hearings started?

Can we all agree it’s unbelievable that California has lead contamination levels higher than Flint, MI and no one seems to care?

Can we all agree North Korea leader Kim Jong-un apparently has a bright future as a bank robber?

Can we all agree Ivanka Trump has always been working in the government, now she will have an office? Setting up her company to make believe she is not running it, is just paperwork.

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s low approval rating will continue to play a role in his inability to get Congress to go along with his legislative agenda?

Can we all agree everyone has a favorite Chuck Berry tune?

Can we all agree for many years,  if you really wanted to know the heart of a great city you needed too read columnists such as Jimmy Breslin, Mike Royko or Herb Caen?

and finally:

This week’s good news to restore your faith in humanity.

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 9/17/16 edition

September 17, 2016

Can we all agree Donald Trump’s admission that President Obama was indeed born in the United States, typifies everything that’s wrong with the GOP nominee’s campaign? I wonder what President Obama might be thinking.

Can we all agree that he should apologize to the President and to the American people?

Can we all agree the members of the press have not really acquitted themselves well this campaign season, but they don’t deserve the treatment Mr. Trump has heaped on them?

Can we all agree The President seems to enjoy campaigning against Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree that, unfortunately, Mr. Trump’s children seem to have inherited the same  genetic predisposition for exaggeration, lies and avoidance, that their father has?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump even makes waves when he attends events he’s been invited to? Luckily some members of the press are  starting to point out his lies.

Can we all agree that you have real problems if you’re the GOP candidate  and can’t secure the endorsement of one of the nation’s most conservative newspapers?

Can we all agree even his policy statements don’t make sense? Even Trump doesn’t seem to understand his family leave plan. Maybe that’s why he keeps making outrageous suggestions.

Can we all agree it’s hard to believe the race is so close? Could it be, because gender matters, or maybe, can we all agree, it’s not that bad?

Can we all agree there should be a special place in hell for police officers and  politicians who are urging violence if their candidate does not win the race for the White House?

Can we all agree there has been an awful lot written about the health of two candidates who say they are fine?

Can we all agree it’s about time some governmental agency investigated  some of Trump’s activity?

Can we all agree that Congress seems to be finding new ways to make themselves look foolish by passing bills the President says he will veto?

Can we all agree, there may be pockets of the country where displaced workers cannot find jobs, but, by and large, the numbers say the economy is vastly better than the GOP would have us believe?

Can we all agree it’s nice to have a new  Congressional Librarian who is actually a trained librarian?

Can we all agree, speaking of librarians, it’s hard to believe that the University of New Hampshire is using a quarter of a $4million bequest from their former librarian for a sports scoreboard?

Can we all agree the new front in the cyber-battle with Russia sounds a lot like the old Cold War?

Can we all agree Vladimir Putin seems committed to using computers to wreak havoc in any area where he feels the country has been wronged – including the Olympics?

Can we all agree it’s nice to hear Mr. Obama say he wants to increase the number of Syrian refugees allowed to enter the US, but he won’t be in any position to carry out his order?

Can we all agree it’s surprising that there has been so little commentary about the new 10-year deal to supply military aid to Israel?

Can we all agree it’s possible US troops were sent to Northern Syria to referee the battle between Turkey and the Kurdish rebels?

Can we all agree it’s foolish for western democracies to complain about falling birth rates while refusing to admit new refugees?

Can we all agree it’s about time a president protected some of the Atlantic Ocean?

Can we all agree the NCAA and ACC should get some kudos for removing events from North Carolina because of the state’s ‘bathroom laws,’ but it doesn’t sound like state lawmakers care?

Can we all agree that it appears the cease-fire in Syria may have quieted the guns, but did little to provide any food to the residents?

Can we all agree it’s tough to feel sympathy for Mark Zuckerberg who lost a zoning decision with thePalo Alto city council?

Can we all agree the folks at Samsung have badly mismanaged their phone recall?

Can we all agree Wells Fargo management can claim they did not condone what their employees did, but they set up the structures that encouraged the bad behavior? Anyone who has ever done business with the bank knows it.

Can we all agree that while political correctness on college campuses is getting out of hand, the fraternity at the University of Richmond deserves some serious criticism for their party invitation? I’ll admit, I’m not sure what to say about the University of California’s decision to cancel a Palestinian studies class.

Can we all agree the Marine Corps drill instructor who ordered a recruit into a clothes dryer deserves some kind of punishment?

Can we all agree that $100 million for another study of concussions is nice, but probably won’t do much to encourage parents to let their children play football?

Can we all agree the Bayer acquisition of Monsanto may signal the beginning of the end for GMO crops?

Can we all agree, we should all get a vote in which toy goes into the Toy Hall of Fame?

Captain Kirk's new battleship

Captain Kirk’s new battleship

Can we all agree that there is some kind of symmetry in having the Navy’s new futurist battleship launched on the eve of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek commanded by Captain Kirk?

and finally:

Let us all salute the Maryland bus driver who rescued 20 children from a burning school bus.

and

Maybe Mr. Trump is right and there should be no moderators at the first Presidential debate, just someone with a starter’s pistol to signal the beginning and end of the event.

and

Don’t forget to cheek where your favorite college is ranked.

and

RIP Edward Albee and W.P. Kinsella. I don’t want to guess which man is more well known.

Can we all agree, speaking of a bit off, that Bernie Sanders sounds  off base trying to claim Hillary is unqualified because of votes she made as a Senator?

Can we all agree that, if there was any doubt about who President Obama backs, it looked pretty obvious after his comments this weekend on Fox News.

Can we all agree that the Democratic primary system looks like it was designed to benefit the candidate supported by the establishment? No matter how many victories Sanders notches, he doesn’t seem to make up much delegate ground.

Can we all agree that Bernie Sanders trip to Rome for a conference, in the middle of a campaign, seems bit strange?

Can we all agree that Ted Cruz is getting a good taste of New York values as he campaigns in the city?

Can we all agree that Bernie Sanders will probably have a lot of explaining to do at next week’s debate, after his Daily News interview revealed some holes in his plans for the country?

Can we all agree that Donald Blankenship got off easy with a year in prison and a fine after lax safety standards led to the death of 29 miners at one of his coal mines?

Can we all agree that no matter how much hype a state primary generates, no one even remembers who won, three days later?

Can we all agree that it’s good news the economy added 215,000 new jobs last month? Someone please tell the GOP and Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree that it’s somehow comforting to know that self-driving cars apparently will not be common until the condition of US roadways improves significantly? Maybe that will get them fixed.

Can we all agree, speaking of cars, putting $1,000 down for a $35,000 Tesla which may not be available for two years puts a bit too much faith in Elon Musk? That didn’t stop 133,000 fanatics though.

Can we all agree it was great to see the ‘Stones’ play Havana? Relations can now be considered normal.

Can we all agree that increases in the minimum wage in California and New York are welcome, but could be entirely eaten up by inflation, by the time they are fully implemented?

Can we all agree the women’s soccer stars who have kept their sport alive while the men continue to be international also-rans, deserve higher pay than the men?

Can we all agree that Alabama’s Republican Governor deserves to lose his job over his sex scandal?

Can we all agree that the FDA’s action this week, increasing the ability of women to end their pregnancies on their own, may do more to insure adequate access, than anything activists might do?

Can we all agree that Donald Trump has, once again, shown how improbably uninformed he is on topics ranging  from abortion to nuclear missiles? Quite an accomplishment.

Can we all agree all three of the remaining  candidates, Kasich, Cruz and Trump sound increasingly desperate and the GOP is now officially the party of the walking dead?

Can we all agree that the actions of one of our smallest states will have a big impact on food labeling?

Can we all agree, that since US politicians continue to deny global warming, despite the most recent revelations about the Antarctic ice sheet, our only choice is to head to higher ground?

Can we all agree it was nice to have the GOP candidates get together this week and not debate? Did we ever believe Mr, Trump intended to support the GOP nominee if it was not him?

Can we all agree it might be a bit unsettling to see your pilot arrested and taken off your plane, just minutes before your were scheduled to take off?

Can we all agree that continuing revelations about the activity of terrorists in the EU might make Americans think twice about their summer travel plans to Europe?

Can we all agree it was good news that at least one governor (in Georgia) stood up to the crazies?

Can we all agree that when man-made earthquakes have become a natural phenomenon, we’ve all lost sight of the dangers of fracking?

Can we all agree that when anyone on your campaign staff is charged with a crime, you really should tell them to find some other line of work? Let’s go to the video tape…

Can we all agree that it may not take many more 4-4 Supreme Court votes before Mitch McConnell’s coalition against Judge Merrick B. Garland starts to show cracks? Although it would be great to know what threat he’s using to keep them in line.

and finally:

Can we all agree that it’s tough for some of us to understand why people want to create a second or third virtual reality when the reality we all live, is a pretty good show?

Can we all agree that Hillary’s email issues will continue to hurt her campaign, but will probably not derail it? And, by the way, why doesn’t anyone remember the emails that disappeared from George W. Bush’s private email server?

Can we all agree that Donald Trump won his battle this week with Fox News? Ratings were down and all anyone talked about was the fact that he was not at the debate.

Can we all agree, speaking of the GOP debate, Ted Cruz seemed to be the biggest loser?

Can we all agree that Facebook should be applauded for finally taking a stand against gun sales on its websites?

Can we all agree that the overall economy’s anemic growth in the last quarter seems to fly in the face of what’s happening in some parts of the country?

Can we all agree the zika virus outbreaks are terrifying for pregnant women or anyone thinking of having a baby? This probably adds to their anxiety and depression.

Can we all agree that the indictment of the anti-abortion filmmakers, especially by a Texas grand jury, is unbelievably great news? Too bad the GOP and other so called ‘pro-lifers’ will not let the facts get in the way of continued use of the discredited videos.

Can we all agree that while it might be the politically correct thing to do, Barbie is no longer ‘Barbie’ is there are 8 different versions?

Can we all agree that while the NFL has been slow to wake up to the long term impact of concussions, the NCAA remains tragically far behind?

Can we all agree that Florida State University is continuing to put its football program ahead of the rights of women?imrs.php

Can we all agree, getting back to politics, that when Republican voters see Trump as the most electable candidate but world leaders see him (and Ted Cruz) as impossible to work with, we have a serious problem?

Can we all agree that the President’s step to normalize relations with Cuba have reached the point that they cannot be undone by the next president?

Can We All Agree – 4/5/15 Edition

April 5, 2015

This week’s commentary on the news:

Can we all agree that no matter what kind of agreement the EU and US reach with Iran, Mr. Netanyahu and his GOP will oppose it?

Can we all agree that it’s better to be talking with Iran than fighting with them? Although it’s tough to ignore their state sponsored terrorism.

Can we all agree that the continuing revelations about the copilot of the Germanwings plane, make the whole episode, much more tragic?05kentucky2-master675

Can we ll agree that Lufthansa Airlines is in a lot of trouble if they knew their pilot was seriously depressed, and still allowed to fly?

Can we ll agree that, it’s not the ‘liberal press’ or ‘militant gays’ that are behind the brouhaha over the Indiana and Arkansas religious freedom bills?

Can we all agree that the European Union’s skepticism about the business practices of Google, Apple and Facebook is much healthier than the unquestioning ‘regulation’ of US agencies?

images Can we all agree that outside of  Kentucky, most of us were pulling for Wisconsin in the NCAA semi-final on Saturday?
