CWAA: Can We All Agree™ – 2/10/18 edition

February 10, 2018

Can we all agree, at some point even, Donald Trump will tire of the dysfunction in his own White House?

Can we all agree, two resignations and an offer to resign by the chief of staff, cannot be considered normal?

Can we all agree, no one is surprised  that Donald Trump thinks spousal abuse is fine for an ‘honorable public servant’?

Vice President Mike Pence and his wife, standing in front of the North Korean delegation at the start of the Winter Olympics. (NYT photo)

Can we all agree, there was no chance The President was going to let the Democratic defense of the FBI and Department of Justice be made public? Expect a leak, soon.

Can we all agree, it won’t be long before Robert Porter’s girlfriend, White House Communications Director Hope Hicks, runs afoul of Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree, after this week’s budget agreement, neither Democrats nor Republicans can use the deficit as a reason to oppose government spending?

Can we all agree, even Paul Ryan and the Tea Party who spent the last 10 years objecting to Obama era programs, didn’t have the political will to vote against the plan?

Can we all agree, it won’t be long before there is no one left at the Department of Justice who could fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller?

Can we all agree, the message of peace and harmony, from the Winter Olymoucs, is a welcome respite from our internal political turmoil?

Can we all agree, if the government was really interested in Peace, Vice President Mike Pence and his wife should have turned around and publicly greeted the North Korean delegation.

Can we all agree, it’s hard to understand how intelligence officials, can be bilked out of $100,000 – aren’t they the people we rely on for accurate intelligence?

Can we all agree, using a top secret government computer seems like a perfect way to mine bitcoins – until you get caught by the KGB?

Can we all agree, Israel’s entrance into the Syrian conflict is an ominous new sign of the region’s continuing instability?

Can we all agree, Americans need continual reminders that this is not 1929 and the stock market is not the economy?

Can we all agree, 200,000 cases of fraud from the Wine Country fires are hard to fathom?

Can we all agree, it’s about time the International Court investigated the actions of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte?

Can we all agree, Angela Merkel, lost some power but she did what she had to do to create a German government that was functional?

Can we all agree, Steve Wynn may have lost his job but he saved his company?

Can we all agree, we don’t need ‘lady friendly’ Doritos?

Can we all agree, god did the nation a favor, by declining to tell Michelle Bachman to seek a US Senate seat?

Can we all agree, the last thing this country needs is a military parade to boost Mr. Trump’s ego?

Can we all agree, it seems pretty clear the only person in the government who did not like James Comey, was Donald Trump?

Can we all agree, Rep. Nancy Pelosi didn’t win, but her 8-hour speech in defense of Dreamers won her respect?

Can we all agree, the world should be outraged by the Polish government in restricting free speech regarding the holocaust?

Can we all agree, anyone who has ever bought a lottery ticket would gladly change places with the New Hampshire woman who declined to accept her $640 million lottery prize, because she didn’t want her name to be made public?

Can we all agree, Democrats who did not applaud Mr. Trump at the State Of the Union, were doing the MOST American thing they could: defending their right to free speech? And he was not trying to make a joke.

Can we all agree, if President Obama, former Attorney General Eric Holder and the Supreme Court all seem to be on the same side in opposing Reoublican gerrymandering, maybe we do have a way out of our electoral mess?

The deficit clock: both sides have thrown in the towel

The deficit clock: both sides have thrown in the towel

Can we all agree, if the GOP wants to see how much trouble their candidates are facing, they only need to look at California where Republican candidates are already facing long odds for re-election?

Can we all agree, there is a very human dark  side to the gig economy that no one really wants to discuss?

Can we all agree, Elon Musk has successfully disrupted the rocket launch business with his usual bravado – now if he could only deliver cars on time, he might even make money?

and finally:

If you want some examples of the right way to fight obesity, take a look at what Chile is doing.

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 9/17/16 edition

September 17, 2016

Can we all agree Donald Trump’s admission that President Obama was indeed born in the United States, typifies everything that’s wrong with the GOP nominee’s campaign? I wonder what President Obama might be thinking.

Can we all agree that he should apologize to the President and to the American people?

Can we all agree the members of the press have not really acquitted themselves well this campaign season, but they don’t deserve the treatment Mr. Trump has heaped on them?

Can we all agree The President seems to enjoy campaigning against Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree that, unfortunately, Mr. Trump’s children seem to have inherited the same  genetic predisposition for exaggeration, lies and avoidance, that their father has?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump even makes waves when he attends events he’s been invited to? Luckily some members of the press are  starting to point out his lies.

Can we all agree that you have real problems if you’re the GOP candidate  and can’t secure the endorsement of one of the nation’s most conservative newspapers?

Can we all agree even his policy statements don’t make sense? Even Trump doesn’t seem to understand his family leave plan. Maybe that’s why he keeps making outrageous suggestions.

Can we all agree it’s hard to believe the race is so close? Could it be, because gender matters, or maybe, can we all agree, it’s not that bad?

Can we all agree there should be a special place in hell for police officers and  politicians who are urging violence if their candidate does not win the race for the White House?

Can we all agree there has been an awful lot written about the health of two candidates who say they are fine?

Can we all agree it’s about time some governmental agency investigated  some of Trump’s activity?

Can we all agree that Congress seems to be finding new ways to make themselves look foolish by passing bills the President says he will veto?

Can we all agree, there may be pockets of the country where displaced workers cannot find jobs, but, by and large, the numbers say the economy is vastly better than the GOP would have us believe?

Can we all agree it’s nice to have a new  Congressional Librarian who is actually a trained librarian?

Can we all agree, speaking of librarians, it’s hard to believe that the University of New Hampshire is using a quarter of a $4million bequest from their former librarian for a sports scoreboard?

Can we all agree the new front in the cyber-battle with Russia sounds a lot like the old Cold War?

Can we all agree Vladimir Putin seems committed to using computers to wreak havoc in any area where he feels the country has been wronged – including the Olympics?

Can we all agree it’s nice to hear Mr. Obama say he wants to increase the number of Syrian refugees allowed to enter the US, but he won’t be in any position to carry out his order?

Can we all agree it’s surprising that there has been so little commentary about the new 10-year deal to supply military aid to Israel?

Can we all agree it’s possible US troops were sent to Northern Syria to referee the battle between Turkey and the Kurdish rebels?

Can we all agree it’s foolish for western democracies to complain about falling birth rates while refusing to admit new refugees?

Can we all agree it’s about time a president protected some of the Atlantic Ocean?

Can we all agree the NCAA and ACC should get some kudos for removing events from North Carolina because of the state’s ‘bathroom laws,’ but it doesn’t sound like state lawmakers care?

Can we all agree that it appears the cease-fire in Syria may have quieted the guns, but did little to provide any food to the residents?

Can we all agree it’s tough to feel sympathy for Mark Zuckerberg who lost a zoning decision with thePalo Alto city council?

Can we all agree the folks at Samsung have badly mismanaged their phone recall?

Can we all agree Wells Fargo management can claim they did not condone what their employees did, but they set up the structures that encouraged the bad behavior? Anyone who has ever done business with the bank knows it.

Can we all agree that while political correctness on college campuses is getting out of hand, the fraternity at the University of Richmond deserves some serious criticism for their party invitation? I’ll admit, I’m not sure what to say about the University of California’s decision to cancel a Palestinian studies class.

Can we all agree the Marine Corps drill instructor who ordered a recruit into a clothes dryer deserves some kind of punishment?

Can we all agree that $100 million for another study of concussions is nice, but probably won’t do much to encourage parents to let their children play football?

Can we all agree the Bayer acquisition of Monsanto may signal the beginning of the end for GMO crops?

Can we all agree, we should all get a vote in which toy goes into the Toy Hall of Fame?

Captain Kirk's new battleship

Captain Kirk’s new battleship

Can we all agree that there is some kind of symmetry in having the Navy’s new futurist battleship launched on the eve of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek commanded by Captain Kirk?

and finally:

Let us all salute the Maryland bus driver who rescued 20 children from a burning school bus.

and

Maybe Mr. Trump is right and there should be no moderators at the first Presidential debate, just someone with a starter’s pistol to signal the beginning and end of the event.

and

Don’t forget to cheek where your favorite college is ranked.

Can We All Agree – 8/20/16 edition

August 20, 2016

Can we all agree it will take more than one dramatic photo of a dazed little boy, to force the warring factions in Syria to stop fighting and get serious about ending a war that no one can win?

Can we all agree the actions of Ryan Lochte and his fellow swimmers are probably the biggest unforced error in Olympic history?

Can we all agree the whole episode just takes the spotlight away from the spectacular performance of the athletes?

Can we all agree the United Nations should be embarrassed that it took them 6 years to admit their soldiers brought cholera to Haiti?

Can we all agree that we have no interest in getting a ride from one of Uber’s planned driverless cars in Pittsburgh? Maybe they knew a SF judge was going to reject their proposed settlement with drivers?

Can we all agree that it would be a lot more comforting to wait five years for the Ford fleet to become available?

Can we all agree the only reason Donald Trump went to visit Louisiana flooding victims was to embarrass the President?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s “teleprompter regret” didn’t come close to an apology?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump needs to look no further than this week’s news from Washington state, to see the impact of his hateful speech?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s latest campaign reorganization is probably his last gasp? Or maybe it’s a death rattle?

Can we all agree the change was inevitable once the word got out about Ukraine’s secret payments to campaign manager Paul Manafort?

Can we all agree Mr. Trump’s plan for increased vetting of Muslim’s entering the country, is just wrong on every level? Even conservatives are dismayed.

Can we all agree that adding Roger Ailes to your list of advisors, probably won’t win you any female votes?

Can we all agree real panic has set in with the GOP, as they ponder losing control of both the House and Senate?

Can we all agree, if Hillary Clinton is elected, she and her husband should give up any role in their foundation and maybe even close it down?

Can we all agree a judge’s decision forcing Mrs. Clinton to submit written answers to questions about her use of a private email server, will uncover few new facts and just keep the issue alive – which is exactly the point?

Can we all agree the Obama administration’s explanation  about the money paid to Iran, when hostages were released, is still just linguistic gymnastics?

Can we all agree, that with no rain due until November, California firefighters have their work cut out for them?

Can we all agree the Justice Department’s decision to gradually eliminate using private prison firms for inmates should be copied by the states?

Can we all agree that. if Kamala Harris is elected as California’s next senator she will be featured at the 2020 convention and will find her way on to the presidential ticket in 2024? You read it here first.

Can we all agree there probably won’t be many young ‘snowbirds’ vacationing in Miami this winter?

Can we all agree the GOP is now getting another black eye from it’s own candidates for not approving any money to fight the Zika virus?

Can we all agree, if former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling runs against Elizabeth Warren for US Senate, it will be a replay of the Trump campaign, just on a smaller scale?

Can we all agree the Social Security Administration’s plan to get seniors to confirm their identity by using text messaging, had to be dreamed up by an out of touch millennial?

Can we all agree that we don’t understand the French ban on Burkinis at the beach?

A Burkini bathing suit on the beach

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 8/13/16 edition

August 13, 2016

Can we all agree, that with Ledecky, Phelps and Biles leading the way, the US team’s performance has been nothing short of unbelievable?

Can we all agree, every Baby Boomer has noticed that the average age of Olympic athletes has been creeping up for the last few years, but now the athletic senior citizens are actually winning medals?

Can we all agree that the Simone Manuel story could be the best of the first week?

Can we all agree that Hope Solo, losing goalie for the ousted US women’s soccer team, would be better off keeping her mouth shut?

Can we all agree the nationalistic back-and-forth over drug use by Olympic athletes really masks the fact that the IOC has bungled the issue for years?

Simone Manuel looks at her time in the 100 meter freestyle event in Rio. (NY Times photo)

Can we all agree that NBC has sabotaged their own ratings, particularly on the West coast, by forcing viewers to watch taped events when we all know the results?

Can we all agree the more interesting stories, may have been the real-life look at what goes on that TV cameras don’t show, and some that come across in living green?

Can we all agree, if Donald Trump had not refused to release his tax returns, the details of Hillary Clinton’s return would have been much bigger news?

Can we all agree the top news story of the week should have been the Federal report on the inner workings of the Baltimore Police Department?

Can we all agree that if the new leadership at Fox News was supposed to mark a new beginning, the Murdochs have come up empty?

Can we all agree that, in case there was ever any doubt, Facebook’s decision to force ads on to user’s pages, removes all doubt about who their real customers are? (Hint, it’s not the 1.71 billion active monthly users.)

Can we all agree that if reincarnation is real it might be nice to come back as the Greenland Shark which can apparently live for over 500 years?

Can we all agree that Mr. Trump’s  explanation that he was being sarcastic when he called Mrs. Clinton and President Obama founders of ISIS, rings pretty hollow, especially to his supporters who tried to defend him for two days before he changed his tune?

Can we all agree his ISIS accusation may be a calculated attempt to take attention away from his horrifying statements on what ‘second amendment people’ should do about Hillary Clinton – even before she is elected?

Can we all agree, no one is surprised that the NRA continues to back Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree that Mr. Trump has totally lost any chance to criticize the latest batch of emails from Mrs. Clinton?

Can we all agree it’s distressing to know that gun control supporters in the US seem to have the same opinion of our gun laws as ISIS?

Can we all agree it’s pretty frustrating to debate Mr. Trump on policy, since most voters don’t understand the subtleties of statements on topics like economic theory?

Can we all agree that even Mr. Trump seems to believe he’s going to lose the election? Of course he thinks it’s rigged although polls show him losing swing states by double digits.

Can we all agree the GOP move away from Mr. Trump has turned into a stampede?

Can we all agree that the debate about who was sitting behind which candidate shows just how far the  presidential campaign has sunk?

Can we all agree, it’s tough to know what the DEA was trying to do in their announcement this week, declining to reclassify marijuana?

Can we all agree it’s hard to believe that the Japanese emperor needs permission to retire?

and finally:

Can we all agree, if this story doesn’t make you emotional, you can officially consider yourself jaded?

And, for all my journalism fans, two stories that might restore your faith in newspapers?

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 8/6/16 edition

August 6, 2016

Can we all agree the opening ceremony at the Rio Olympics was pretty mesmerizing at times and quite the fashion show? The US has already won a gold medal.

Can we all agree NBC has made it easy to watch the Olympics almost any time of the day or night?

Part of the opening ceremonies in Rio (LA Times photo)

Part of the opening ceremonies in Rio (LA Times photo)

Can we all agree that it’s tough to complain about the economy when 255,000 jobs were added last month and the stock market hit a new high?

Can we all agree, we’re a bit conflicted about about possible stem cell research on animals with human genes?

Can we all agree that Miami tourism will take a hit now that the CDC has warned about traveling to the area because of the Zika virus?

Can we all agree we’ll keep flossing despite reports that it is not as effective as our dentists say it is?

Can we all agree it’s hard to figure out what changed between Monday and Friday that pushed Donald Trump to change his mind about endorsing Paul Ryan and John McCain and other GOP candidates?

Can we all agree  he was sending a message by making the announcement late on Friday when no one will notice?

Can we all agree it is indeed a strange day when Mr. Trump admits he was wrong?

Can we all agree that despite what President Obama and John Kerry say, perception is reality, when it comes to the $400 million sent to Iran as hostages were released?

Can we all agree that Khizr Khan’s may have delivered the least watched speech of the Democratic convention, but it is now the most well known? Mr. Trump’s Viet Nam deferments don’t help his cause.

Can we all agree that if you are running a campaign trying to appeal to the ‘average American’ it might be better if you didn’t have 11 billionaires on your economic team?

Can we all agree it’s good to have a scorecard to keep track of which Republicans are still backing Mr. Trump and which have had enough?

Can we all agree most Republicans will pay little attention to Mr. Obama’s suggestion that they abandon Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree that if you can believe the polls Hillary Clinton is already picking her transition team? She also won the endorsement of the former head of the CIA.

Can we all agree that Mr. Obama had the perfect comeback to Mr. Trump’s claim that the elections are rigged when he noted, “But they elected me?”

Can we all agree that Mr. Trump’s fundraising in July was pretty impressive, but the real test will be his August and September totals?

Can we all agree the GOP is in big trouble when a stronghold such as Orange County in California begins titling toward the Democrats?

Can we all agree that politics, combined with social media, encourages people to do some strange things?

Can we all agree the African National Congress probably deserved to lose the South African election this week?

Can we all agree the best story of the week may be the human chain formed by rescuers in Maryland after flooding trapped motorists?

Can we all agree it has taken the administration too long to take action in Lybia?

Can we all agree there is no chance any of us will jump out of an airplane without a parachute?

Can we all agree that it will be great to have Jon Stewart to watch, sort of, during the election season?

And finally:

Can we all agree it sometimes takes a real outsider to explain us to ourselves?

CWAA: Can We All Agree – 7/30/16 edition

July 30, 2016

Can we all agree the difference between the Democratic and Republican conventions was pretty stark?

Can we all agree that, based on the TV ratings, America seems pretty engaged in the political process, even though it’s the middle of summer and half the country is on vacation somewhere?

Can we all agree that if Ronald Reagan had been watching, he would have a lot more in common with the Democratic themes than with anything he would have heard at the GOP convention?

Khizr Khan and his wife at the Democratic convention this week. (Getty Images)

Khizr Khan and his wife at the Democratic convention this week. (Getty Images)

Can we all agree the most powerful, but least watched part of the convention may have been the speech by Khizr Khan, whose 27-year-old Muslim-American son was killed in Afghanistan?

Can we all agree with Sarah Silverman that Bernie Sanders supporters, who continue to be angry with Hillary Clinton are just “being ridiculous,” although polls seem to show that 90% of them, outside the convention hall support the Democratic nominee.

Can we all agree that Mrs. Clinton is not the best public speaker but then, President Obama, The First Lady, Joe Biden and Bill Clinton are pretty tough acts to follow?

Can we all agree that Chelsea sounds like she will take after her father as a public speaker?

Can we all agree Donald Trump has succeeded in totally embarrassing his own wife?

Can we all agree that Mr. Trump’s press conferences are must see TV, just to find out what he will be retracting the next day?

Can we all agree we’re not surprised that Mr. Trump’s favorite movie is about a billionaire megalomanic?

Can we all agree the next three months will be among the most decisive in the nation’s history?

Can we all agree the Clinton campaign should be pretty nervous if stories that her email accounts were hacked by Vladimir Putin’s geek squad are true?

Can we all agree that if DNC chair Debbie Wasserman had been more transparent in the way she handled the Democratic primary season, she might have been able to keep her job, even after the hacked emails were made public and the DNC had to issue an apology?

Can we all agree there was plenty of other news, but it was tough to find amid all the convention coverage?

Can we all agree the second quarter GDP figure makes it seem like the economy is a lot worse than it really is?

Can we all agree it was just a matter of time before our own mosquitos were found to carry the Zika virus? But don’t expect our representatives to take a break from their 7-week recess to return to Washington to do anything about it?

Can we all agree the best thing most Americans could do to show support for Europe would be to vacation there this summer and fall?

Can we all agree that while it’s great to see 6 more public officials charged in connection with the Flint water crises, I doubt the residents of that city feel any comfort when they look at what has been done to their children?

Can we all agree the most bittersweet story of the week might be the opening of the new Sandy Hook elementary school?

Can we all agree it was encouraging to know the Federal Court saw right through the North Carolina and Wisconsin legislatures’ attempts to restrict voting in their states?

Stephen Colbert

Stephen Colbert

Can we all agree it was fun to see Stephen Colbert revive his conservative alter ego, but troubling to find out the effort may be short lived?

Can we all agree it was probably only matter of time before state fairs began sponsoring marijuana pie contests?

Can we all agree that only the notorious RBG could get away with presiding over a mock court appeal by Shylock after a Venice production of the Merchant of Venice?

Can we all agree that Bill O’Reilly doesn’t seem to understand why people were outraged when he noted that the slaves who helped build the White House, mentioned by Michelle Obama, ‘were well fed?’

Can we all agree the closure of media outlets and detainment of 47 newspaper executives pretty much ends any doubts about whether Turkey is still a democracy?

Can we all agree that, as my radio colleague Rick Love noted, we are all a bit concerned what will happen when John Hinkley’s 91-year-old mother is no longer around to supervise his home detention?

Can we all agree that, once again, the NFL has escaped criticism for their faulty show of concern about concussions in young football players?

Can we all agree that in any other week the government’s decision to admit more refugees from Central America would have touched off a huge controversy?

Can we all agree that of all the senseless ISIS murders, the death of an 85-year old priest during morning mass in France was among the most pointless?

Can we all agree that basketball icon Michael Jordan deserves praise for literally putting his money where his mouth is, when he spoke out against violence this week?

Can we all agree that no one is looking forward to the kind of horror stories about unfinished Olympic facilities that we expect to read when the Games open next week? Not to mention the trials of the Russian athletes over doping allegations.

And finally two nice reads for the week:

One on what really happens at The baseball Hall of Fame and another on life in New York City – enjoy.

Can we all agree Hillary Clinton’s decision to pick Senator Timothy Kaine as her running mate was probably the safe choice, but he could make a difference with more moderate republicans?

Can we all agree, that if the GOP was trying to expand their base, their convention this week was a disaster?

Can we all agree that if most Americans bought into Mr. Trump’s doom and gloom picture of the United States we would all have moved to New Zealand?

Can we all agree the major connection between Mr. Trump’s theme of “I alone can...” and “I am your voice,” is the letter “I?”

Can we all agree the convention did little to convince anyone that the Republicans are just one big happy family?

Can we all agree that if your main themes are to either kill or jail your opponent you don’t really have a platform? Especially if the FBI rightfully starts an investigation – of you.

Can we all agree that Ted Cruz might have thought he was starting his 2020 campaign, but he was really ending it?

Can we all agree that as long as Mr. Trump maintains a thin skin and an outsized ego, Democrats will have no problem embarrassing him for the next three months?

Can we all agree that when one major speaker is booed off the stage and another is shown to have plagiarized parts of her speech, it’s tough to call the week a success?

Can we all agree we are not surprised at the GOP convention  TV ratings – it was quite the show?

Can we all agree that without the GOP convention and it’s jaw dropping moments, there was still plenty of unsettling news?

Can we all agree we’ve run out of words to describe the senseless violence striking Western Countries but we know Donald Trump will not make us feel safer?

Can we all agree that two years of searching for the missing Malaysian airliner is  more than enough?

Can we all agree that regardless of what you think of Roger Ailes, he had a major impact on TV news and US politics?

Can we all agree that we would not have Donald Trump as a candidate, were it not for Ailes and Fox TV?

Radio host Laura Ingraham salutes the GOP nominee.

Radio host Laura Ingraham salutes the GOP nominee.

Can we all agree the NBA’s decision to move their all-star game from Charlotte, is an important chapter in sport’s history? If no changes are made will Michael Jordan move his team?

Can we all agree the real losers on the decision to ban the Russian track and field team from the Rio Olympics, are the few athletes who did not take drugs because it would not have helped their performance?

Can we all agree, news that the Nice truck driver had apparently been planning his attack for a year, and may have had accomplices puts a new spin on his horrible act?

Can we all agree that when Turkish Prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, declared a three-month state of emergency after purging 40,000 people from their positions, he was simply solidifying his hold on power and making good on his claim that the attempted coup was a ‘gift from god.’

Can we all agree, the real victim will be his own country? Erdogan may have already sown the seeds of his own fate, and that of cleric Fethullah Gülen?

Can we all agree that soon, the only term that will describe Erdogan is, dictator?

Can we all agree that GOP attempts to limit voting are having a tough time standing up to the constitution?

Can we all agree that advocates of gun control may not need many more stories like this, out of Massachusetts, to make their point?

Can we all agree that Rep.Loretta Sanchez is showing some signs of desperation now that President Obama and others have endorsed Kamala Harris in the race for the California senate seat?

and finally:

Can we all agree, the long term impact of the Brexit vote is probably somewhere between the doom and gloom of the economists and the euphoric reaction of Donald Trump?

Can we all agree that only Mr. Trump could put it in context by telling us how good it will be for his Scottish golf course?

Can we all agree with the members of the major EU members: If the separation must happen it should be done quickly?

Can we all agree that it probably won’t have much impact on the election in the United States? There’s a big difference between leaving a political union and electing a racist egomaniac – more likely it will serve as a warning to Americans.
