#CWAA: Can We All Agree™ – 4/14/18 edition

April 14, 2018

Can we all agree, Mr. Trump will have a tough time convincing Americans that his missile attack on Syria was anything more than an attempt to distract attention from his troubles at home?

Can we all agree, the investigation of New York attorney Michael Cohen, could ensnare more people than the Russian investigation? Even  Mr. Trump seems to agree.

Missiles in Syria

Can we all agree, the war of words between former FBI director James Comey and Mr. Trump, favors Comey, if only because he knows more words?

Can we all agree, anyone who has raised children, knows Paul Ryan is lying when he says he’s leaving Congress to spend more time with his teenage children?

Can we all agree, Special Counsel Robert Mueller is probably happy to have the focus off his probe of the White House and on New York prosecutors – even for just a day or two?

Can we all agree, the decision to reconsider the Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement, leaves no doubt Mr. Trump’s  ‘policy decisions’ are based solely on his ever changing mood?

Can we all agree, the same could be said for his pardoning of Scooter Libby and his investigation into Postal Service contracts?

Can we all agree, whoever thought giving teachers small baseball bats, even as a symbol of defiance, really has no understanding of the mood in our schools after the Parkland tragedy?

Can we all agree, it’s comforting to see The Pope admit that he made a mistake in the Chilean sex abuse scandal?

Can we all agree, it won’t be long before climate science deniers find a way to put a positive spin on reduced ocean circulation?

Can we all agree, after years of railing against budget deficits, it’s pretty clear the GOP legacy will be trillion dollar deficits for years to come?

Can we all agree, no one is optimistic about the administration’s ability to negotiate with North Korea?

Can we all agree, as long as the White House zigzags from one policy crises to the next, there will be no coherent GOP message for their candidates in 2018 and Democrats will benefit?

Can we all agree, it’s ironic that this administration might be toppled by a former porn star and not Special Counsel Robert Mueller?

Can we all agree, travelers to LAX should be cheered by news that an elevated train system is planned to move visitors around the airport?

#CWAA: Can We All Agree™ – 3/24/18 edition

March 24, 2018

Can we all agree, today’s protests against gun violence in schools are already creating some change: the DOJ will ban bump stocks  the new budget bill allows research on gun violence and Citigroup is taking a stance on guns?

Can we all agree, when  President Trump threatened to veto (and then signed)  the last minute budget deal, it was just to keep the focus on him? He lost the battle – he really didn’t have any choice – Congress had left town.

'March for Our Lives' protestors in Washington DC, Saturday (NYT photo)

‘March for Our Lives’ protestors in Washington DC, Saturday (NYT photo)

Can we all agree, the Saudi Crown Prince get what he wanted in his visit to the US – positive PR and billions in new weapons?

Can we all agree, Mr. Trump’s ‘edict’ on transgender troops is so confusing it is really meaningless?

Can we all agree, anyone who is shocked that Facebook, whose business plan is based on selling personal information, was used by political campaigns, is just naive?

Can we all agree, anyone who thinks there will be substantive changes to the Facebook business model, is just fooling themselves? Even if you mange to delete your account.

Can we all agree, we will all get to judge, whether the driverless car was at fault in the fatal traffic accident in Arizona?

Can we all agree, the verbal war of words between Mr. Trump and Joe Biden would be hilarious, if they were just schoolyard antagonists, but, like everything else, it has no place in politics?

Can we all agree, we can try to ignore the latest staff changes at the White House, but the elevation of John Bolton, the architect of the war in Iraq, is truly frightening?

Can we all agree, Sacramento protestors, need to keep the pressure on police to explain how an unarmed man, carrying a cellphone, can be shot 20 times in bis own back yard?

Can we all agree, Mr. Trump’s trade war with China will turn out to be just a lot of hot air, just like his tariff’s on steel and aluminum?

Can we all agree, changing lawyers will not help Mr. Trump’s defense against Special Counsel Robert Mueller?

Can we all agree, aides might think the President was ignoring warnings not to congratulate Vladimir Putin, but they should know, he is incapable of reading anything in his briefing books?

Can we all agree, it’s unfortunate that the heroic action of a resource officer in a Maryland school, will now be politicized in our gun debate?

Can we all agree, we are all numb to new revelations of Trump trysts, but they make for great TV?

Can we all agree, the least we should expect from the White House are press releases without misspellings and typos? But I guess that’s too much to ask of this administration.

Can we all agree, The Pope seems to having a tough month, almost as bad as the former president of Peru?

Can we all agree, the 2018 campaign for Congress has not even hit full steam and the 2020 campaign for President has already started in New Hampshire?

CWAA: Can We All Agree™ – 1/20/18 edition

January 20, 2018

Can we all agree, the last thing The President and GOP wanted to see was the headline –  “Government shuts down on anniversary of Trump inauguration.”

Can we all agree, as much as the GOP would like to label this the ‘Schumer Shutdown,’ it is really the ‘sh…thole shutdown’ as Republicans embrace the President’s racist comments on immigration?

Can we all agree, it is unfortunate that today’s women’s marches around the country will get second billing to the government shutdown?

Protesters in New York today. (NYT photo)

Protesters in New York today. (NYT photo)

Can we all agree, there is more than enough blame on both sides, but the GOP will shoulder most of the responsibility since they control the Presidency and both legislative branches?

Can we all agree, the Pentagon’s decision to ignore climate change flies in the face of good sense and the facts?

Can we all agree, by declaring Mr. Trump healthy, the White House doctor has chosen his paycheck over his reputation?

Can we all agree, the President’s doctor is is just the latest in a long line of politicians who have decided that lying for Mr. Trump is the only way to survive?

Can we all agree, for any other President, stories of an affaire with a porn star, three months after your son was born, would prove disastrous?

Can we all agree, no one believes Mr. Trump’s performance on the mental health screening exam says anything about whether he is a danger to the country?

Can we all agree, the nation is more concerned about the flu epidemic than the government shutdown?

Can we all agree, the White House has no idea how to respond to the Olympic detente between the two Koreas?

Can we all agree, the International Olympic Committee has made a mockery of its ban on Russian athletes?

Can we all agree, Former FBI director James Comey, must have chosen the name for the course he will now teach at the College of William and Mary?

Can we all agree, the immigration service’s planned raids of California businesses will add another black eye their already well earned reputation for callousness?

Can we all agree, it’s the same level of enmity shown by the Justice Department’s decision to bypass appeals courts and ask the Supreme Court to dismantle President Obama’s DACA order?

Can we all agree, White House Chief of staff John Kelly seems to be the only man who can tell the truth and keep his job?

Can we all agree, Apple’s decision to reinvest foreign capital in this country is a direct result of the President’s criticism, but you have to wonder if Amazon will choose Toronto for a new headquarters just to annoy Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree, asking Facebook users to rate news sites will be useless in stopping fake news stories?

Can we all agree, it’s hard to read the stories of the 12 California children held captive by their own parents without wondering how no one noticed anything was wrong?

Can we all agree, it’s hard to believe Mr. Trump has only been in office for one year?

Can we all agree, the Pope is having a tough time on his trip to South America?

Can we all agree, the heinous crimes of former Olympic doctor Larry Nassar have not received enough coverage?

Can we all agree, it’s hard to rationalize leaving illegal congressional districts in place, because it would be inconvenient to redraw them  before the next election?

Can we all agree, Republican National Committee’s “Fake News’ awards, just call attention to the over 2,000 lies and misstatements of the President  during his first year in office?

Can we all agree, The House inquiry into Russian interference in our elections is now being used by the GOP to simply punish Mr. Trump’s enemies?

Can we all agree, Senators Jeff Flake and John McCain sound a lot like Democrats as they blast the President?

Can we all agree, blaming the opioid crises on the expansion of Medicare can only occur if you ignore the facts?

Can we all agree, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, doesn’t care that his advisory panel quit?

Can we all agree, it’s 10 months until the mid-term elections, but the GOP just has to look at early election returns too see what’s coming?

Can we all agree, The President doesn’t even appear care about paying tribute to Martin Luther King?

and finally:

A first tweet, for the ages.

Can We All Agree – 9/26/15 Edition

September 26, 2015

Too bad there wasn’t much going on this week. Where to start?

Can we all agree, that Pope Francis has done very little to diminish his stellar reputation during his visit this week?

Can we all agree that even when he’s made statements you disagrees with, it’s tough to argue?

The Pope In Philadelphia - LATimes photo

The Pope In Philadelphia – LATimes photo

Can we all agree that, even excluding John Boehner, he will have a major impact on the social and political debate long after he has left?

Can we all agree that many Californians are still confused about why he would want to wade into the debate over Juniperro Serra by making him a saint?

Can we all agree that while Speaker of the House John Boehner, credits, at least some of his decision to step down to The Pope’s visit, it was more a question of timing?

Can we all agree that Mr. Boehner’s decision really won’t change much?

Can we all agree that we will be having the same conversation about a government shutdown later this year?

Can we all agree that The President’s ability to get Chinese leader Xi Jinping to announce a cap and trade plan for China increases the pressure on Congress to actually address climate change? As if he Pope’s comments were not enough?

Can we all agree that we will all remain a bit skeptical about Chinese promises to end hacking of commercial websites, until we can confirm the practice has ended?

Can we all agree that US businesses should not relax since there are many countries who are more than willing to continue the assault?

Can we all agree that it was nice to see that The Pope was at least able to keep Donald Trump off the front page for a few days?

Can we all agree that we didn’t even know that controversial Kentucky clerk Kim Davis was a Democrat? The GOP is welcome to have her.

Can we all agree that while The Pope’s visit back East was nice, this weekend’s visit by India’s Prime Minister is a much bigger deal in Silicon Valley?

Can we all agree that regardless of who you root for, Yogi Berra’s passing is a sad day for baseball?

Can we all agree that it’s nice to know we can all sing “Happy Birthday” whenever we want and not be forced to pay royalties.

Can we all agree that we are slightly incredulous that VW thought they could sell 11 million cars with software that deliberately deceived everyone, but felt they could escape detection?

Can we all agree that even in a capitalist society 5000% price increases for medication is not a good move?

Can we all agree that no one will miss Scott Walker and his campaign for president?

Can we all agree that this was a good week for presidential candidates to announce controversial decisions, because no one is paying attention? Like Hillary opposing the Keystone pipeline project?

Can we all agree that if you are a federal employee worrying about identity theft, things got a lot worse this week when the government announced that fingerprint records have also been stolen?

Can we all agree that it’s nice to know President Obama will meet with Mr. Putin, but we’re not sure how much good it will do? Have we seen his soul yet?

Scroll down for my special debate edition of CWAA. I thought I’d reserve this one for the real news of the week.

Can we all agree that the war in Syria is taking an ominous turn as Russia apparently stations fighter jets inside the country? At least the US and Russia have agreed to military talks.

Can we all agree that Fed decision to keep rates unchanged was this week’s biggest non-story? Just don’t tell the markets, which tanked on Friday.

Pope Francis is coming _ Washington Post Photo

Can we all agree that the slow motion disaster that is the EU response to the refugee crises will continue as long as there is open warfare or until the country is simply empty?

Can we all agree that it looks bad when a car manufacturer (VW) installs software deliberately meant to avoid accurate emission readings?

Can we all agree that GM might have gotten off easy with ‘only’ a $900m fine for failing to cooperate in the government investigation of failed ignition switches?

Can we all agree that as long as Congress continues to waste time on bills that have no chance of becoming law,  they will be blamed for the expected government shutdown on October 1?

Can we all agree that with the appointment of Eric Fanning as Secretary of the Army we’ve come a long way from “Don’t ask, don’t tell?”

Can we all agree that, of all the tragic stories coming out of the California wildfires, you really have to feel for firefighters on the front lines taking phone calls from loved ones evacuating their homes which are about to burn to the ground?

Can we all agree that the idea of an LA to Las Vegas express train might make sense to Angelinos, but the fact that it might be  built in part by a Chinese company, gives everyone some pause?

Can we all agree that, with the Pope in town,  next week might not be the best time for a quick visit to Washington DC, New York or Philadelphia?

Can we all agree, speaking of travel, that making it easier for Americans to reach Cuba is just the next step in normalized relations?

Can we all agree that, whether you’re a big beer drinker or not, the thought of having one giant multi-national making most of the world’s beer is enough to, well, make you want drink, of something?

Can we all agree that with the number of uninsured American dropping like a stone, it gets tougher and tougher for any politician to call for getting rid of the Affordable Care Act? Although most of the hardcore repealers never let the facts get in the way of a good rant.

Can we all agree that an anti-muslim bias played a large part in the arrest of a 9th grader who brought a home-made clock to school to show his science teacher? Can we all agree he’ll have his choice of jobs, once he finishes school?

Can we all agree that, if it weren’t talking about nuclear missiles,  North Korea’s attempts to make itself the center of the world are really getting pretty desperate?

Drawing of LA to Las Vegas train - LA Times

Drawing of LA to Las Vegas train – LA Times

Can we all agree that an announcement that the Sierra snow pack has hit a 500-year low, really has no meaning for most people? Who measured 500 years ago?

Can we all agree that when a major country such as Australia, changes leaders overnight, it’s a bit disconcerting?

Can we all agree that Vanessa Williams’ apology from the Miss American Pageant sponsors was nice but really, it was about 32 years late?

Can we all agree that very few people can even name pageant winner since Ms. Williams?

Can we all agree that Egypt didn’t do their still recovering tourism industry any favors when they gunned down a group of Mexican tourists traveling through the desert?

And last but not least:

Can we all agree that the Ig-Nobel prizes always give us something to think about, seriously…?

Can we all agree that the NHL champion  Chicago Blackhawks might fit the title of dynasty?

Can We All Agree…? 1/17/15
