CWAA: Can We All Agree – 8/6/16 edition

August 6, 2016

Can we all agree the opening ceremony at the Rio Olympics was pretty mesmerizing at times and quite the fashion show? The US has already won a gold medal.

Can we all agree NBC has made it easy to watch the Olympics almost any time of the day or night?

Part of the opening ceremonies in Rio (LA Times photo)

Can we all agree that it’s tough to complain about the economy when 255,000 jobs were added last month and the stock market hit a new high?

Can we all agree, we’re a bit conflicted about about possible stem cell research on animals with human genes?

Can we all agree that Miami tourism will take a hit now that the CDC has warned about traveling to the area because of the Zika virus?

Can we all agree we’ll keep flossing despite reports that it is not as effective as our dentists say it is?

Can we all agree it’s hard to figure out what changed between Monday and Friday that pushed Donald Trump to change his mind about endorsing Paul Ryan and John McCain and other GOP candidates?

Can we all agree  he was sending a message by making the announcement late on Friday when no one will notice?

Can we all agree it is indeed a strange day when Mr. Trump admits he was wrong?

Can we all agree that despite what President Obama and John Kerry say, perception is reality, when it comes to the $400 million sent to Iran as hostages were released?

Can we all agree that Khizr Khan’s may have delivered the least watched speech of the Democratic convention, but it is now the most well known? Mr. Trump’s Viet Nam deferments don’t help his cause.

Can we all agree that if you are running a campaign trying to appeal to the ‘average American’ it might be better if you didn’t have 11 billionaires on your economic team?

Can we all agree it’s good to have a scorecard to keep track of which Republicans are still backing Mr. Trump and which have had enough?

Can we all agree most Republicans will pay little attention to Mr. Obama’s suggestion that they abandon Mr. Trump?

Can we all agree that if you can believe the polls Hillary Clinton is already picking her transition team? She also won the endorsement of the former head of the CIA.

Can we all agree that Mr. Obama had the perfect comeback to Mr. Trump’s claim that the elections are rigged when he noted, “But they elected me?”

Can we all agree that Mr. Trump’s fundraising in July was pretty impressive, but the real test will be his August and September totals?

Can we all agree the GOP is in big trouble when a stronghold such as Orange County in California begins titling toward the Democrats?

Can we all agree that politics, combined with social media, encourages people to do some strange things?

Can we all agree the African National Congress probably deserved to lose the South African election this week?

Can we all agree the state sponsored drug violence in The Philippines is a stark contrast to President Obama’s commutations of 214 sentences?

Can we all agree that ISIS may be facing defeat on the battlefield but their terror network continues to make America very nervous?

Can we all agree the North Koreans must be feeling neglected again: they’ve decided to target Japan with a missile?

Can we all agree Pope Francis is, once again, making headlines for the right reasons by agreeing to study whether women can become deacons in the Catholic church?

Can we all agree, we’ve all heard enough evidence to know that the fraud trial against Trump University should go ahead?

Can we all agree the biggest non-story of the week might be Melania Trump’s immigration to the US?

Can we all agree the best story of the week may be the human chain formed by rescuers in Maryland after flooding trapped motorists?

Can we all agree it has taken the administration too long to take action in Lybia?

Can we all agree there is no chance any of us will jump out of an airplane without a parachute?

Can we all agree that it will be great to have Jon Stewart to watch, sort of, during the election season?

And finally:

Can we all agree it sometimes takes a real outsider to explain us to ourselves?

Can we all agree that FBI chief James Comey, apparently wanted to clear Hillary Clinton of any criminal wrongdoing regarding her email server, but felt he had to be severely critical to placate the GOP?

Can we all agree the Republican hearings the day after the FBI announcement were a waste of time?

Can we all agree Donald Trump wasted a great opportunity to attack Hillary, by choosing instead to extoll the virtues of Saddam Hussein?

Can we all agree Bernie Sanders didn’t have much luck either when he addressed his Democratic colleagues?

Can we all agree that Republican comparisons between the Clinton case and convicted general David Petraeus are absurd on their face?

Can we all agree that an economy that creates almost 300,000 jobs in a month is doing pretty well?

Can we all agree the British report criticizing the actions of former Prime Minister Tony Blair over the Iraq invasion, is really an indictment of George Bush?

Can we all agree the West has become desensitized to the violence, suicide bombers and murder in the Mid-East?

Can we all agree President Obama’s decision to leave 8500 troops in Afghanistan was really no big surprise?

Can we all agree that we want to believe the sexual harassment charges against Fox News president Roger Ailes?

Can we all agree that Americans take NASA’s remarkable achievements, like sending a satellite to orbit Jupiter, for granted?

Can we all agree Elie Wiesel deserves a permanent memorial for making sure ‘we never forget?’

Can we all agree who have no idea why the openly gay CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, would want to hold a fund raiser for House Speaker Paul Ryan?

and finally:

Can we all agree there is probably an easy way to find out why an unremarkable English village has sudden;y become a must-see stop for Chinese tourists? Just ask them…

Can we all agree that opponents of the death penalty may have found an unlikely ally in Pfizer?

Can we all agree that George Zimmerman has carved out a new definition of insensitivity by deciding to auction the gun he used to kill Trayvon Martin? And that’s the kindest thing I could say.

Can we all agree, speaking of insensitivity, it’s hard to figure out what a Belgium beer company was thinking when they decided to replace the name on their beer cans with ‘America?’

Can we all agree we finally found someone nasty enough for Donald Trump to disavow – his  former Butler ?

Can we all agree the Russian government’s reaction to the Olympic doping scandal, just adds credibility to the charges?

Can we all agree that reading about the political turmoil in Brazil is starting too get very boring?

Can we all agree that Speaker Paul Ryan’s meeting with Donald Trump was all form and no substance?

Can we all agree that if Mr. Trump is elected President he will have at least one foreign leader who will welcome a visit – the new President of the Philippines? He appears to be Trump 2.0.

Can we all agree that Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s social media attacks on Mr. Trump may not win her a VP job with the Clinton campaign, but it’s sure fun to watch?

Can we all agree it’s about time an American President visited Hiroshima?

Can we all agree that the tactics Uber and Lyft are using to avoid improved background checks on their drivers are leaving a bad taste with many consumers?

Steph Curry: NBA MVP (USA Today photo)

Steph Curry: NBA MVP (USA Today photo)

Can we all agree it’s good to know that our representative in Washington can’t agree on fighting Zika, or helping Puerto Rico, or any of a host of other problems, but they can agree that the bison should be the national mammal? As a true orange and blue Bucknell bison I am just so proud.

Can we all agree that Commencement season is destroying the concept of free speech, as campus after campus cancels an invitation, because some group raises an objection?

and finally:

Can we all agree Steph Curry’s shimmy may be a bit of unnecessary celebration, but he certainly deserves to be the first unanimous MVP of any major sport?

Can we all agree that Brazil has picked the wrong time to devolve into political chaos?

Can we all agree that the proposed desert concert including Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Neil Young and Roger Waters  would be a site to behold? Average age of attendees might be over 60, but it would be a great time.

Can we all agree there it’s no secret why the Syrian peace talks failed? President Assad and Vladimir Putin obviously think they can win the ground war.

Can we all agree that President Obama’s visit to a mosque could only have happened late in his second term since most of the right-wing crazies still insist he’s a Muslim? Seems to me George Bush visited a mosque and no one got excited.

Can we all agree that Pope Francis continues to amaze the world with his outreach and attempts to heal old wounds?

Can we all agree that while the addition of 151,000 new jobs may not measure up to the 200,000 created last month, it’s still better than losing jobs?

Can we all agree that the President’s proposal to add $10.00 to the price of a barrel of oil, is a great idea that will go no-where – and he knows it?

Can we all agree that Hillary and Bernie each scored some points during Democratic forums this week?

Can we all agree that Hillary’s best hope on Tuesday is to simply beat expectations and lose by less than 10%.

Can we all agree that barring some unforeseen gaffe, Marco Rubio seems to have a clear shot at the GOP nomination?

Can we all agree that after Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary at least two more GOP candidates will join, Rand Paul, and Rick Santorum on the sidelines? Could Carly be next?

Can we all agree that, were it not for PAC money, Ted Cruz would suffer the same fate as the last two GOP winners of the Iowa caucuses?

Can we all agree that scheduling a Democratic debate on Saturday night has made it all but irrelevant – just like the DNC wanted?

Can we all agree that just four days after the most recent GOP debate no-one even remembers who won or lost?

Can we all agree that the stark contrast between the New York and Los Angeles school systems to a bomb-threat letter is a function of the distance from the most recent terrorist attack?

Can we all agree that the most gut wrenching story of the week was the City of Flint Michigan declaring a state of emergency over the lead poisoning of its children from the city’s own drinking water?

Can we all agree that the facts were few and far between throughout the debate?

Can we all agree that Marco Rubio should resign his senate seat unless he wants to cast a vote at least once in a while?

Can we all agree that with two new shooting incidents on college campuses on the same day the President is visiting Roseburg, the pressure is mounting  on politicians to do something about gun control?

Can we all agree that when 11-year-old’s shoot their 8 year-old playmates, or shoppers start firing weapons at shoplifters, the answer is not, more guns?
